Effects of High-Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) on the Lipid Profile of Patients with Hyperlipidemia: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background/Objectives: Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. Polyphenols found in polyphenol-rich extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) have been shown to possess strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties. The present study aimed to assess the effects of two types of EVOO with different polyphenol content and dosages on the lipid profile of hyperlipidemic patients. Methods: In this single-blind, randomized clinical trial, 50 hyperlipidemic patients were randomized to receive either a higher-dose, lower-phenolic EVOO (414 mg/kg phenols, 20 g/day) or a lower-dose, higher-phenolic EVOO (1021 mg/kg phenols, 8 g/day), for a period of 4 weeks. These doses were selected to ensure equivalent daily polyphenol intake in both groups (~8.3 mg of total phenols/day), based on chemical analysis performed using NMR spectroscopy. The volumes used (8–20 g/day) reflect typical daily EVOO intake and were well tolerated by participants. A group of 20 healthy individuals, separated into two groups, also received the two types of EVOO, respectively, for the same duration. Primary endpoints included blood levels of total blood cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, lipoprotein-a (Lpa), and apolipoproteins A1 and B. Measurements were performed at baseline and at the end of the 4-week intervention. Linear mixed models were performed for the data analysis. Results: The higher-phenolic, lower-dose EVOO group showed a more favorable change in total blood cholesterol (p = 0.045) compared to the lower-phenolic, higher-dose group. EVOO intake was associated with a significant increase in HDL (p < 0.001) and reduction in Lp(a) (p = 0.040) among hyperlipidemic patients in comparison to healthy individuals. Conclusions: EVOO consumption significantly improved the lipid profile of hyperlipidemic patients. Higher-phenolic EVOO at lower dosages appears to be more effective in improving the lipid profile than lower-phenolic EVOO in higher dosages. Full article

Background: Despite therapeutic advances, morbidity and mortality remain high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), primarily due to increased cardiovascular risk. Objectives: Our study aimed to evaluate the cardiovascular risk profile and biomarker dynamics in patients with RA and PsA treated with Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis). To our knowledge, this is the first study assessing Lp(a) levels in this context. Methods: This prospective, observational study assessed 48 adult patients. The follow-up period was 12 months. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors and biological markers, including lipid profile, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], and uric acid (UA), were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Correlations between JAKi therapy, lipid profile changes, and cardiovascular risk factors were investigated. Cox regression analysis was used to identify predictors of non-major cardiovascular events. Results: A strong positive correlation was observed between baseline and 12-month Lp(a) levels (r = 0.926), despite minor statistical shifts. No major cardiovascular events occurred during follow-up; however, 47.9% of patients experienced non-major cardiovascular events (e.g., uncontrolled arterial hypertension, exertional angina, and new-onset arrhythmias). Active smoking [hazard ratio (HR) 9.853, p = 0.005], obesity (HR 3.7460, p = 0.050), and arterial hypertension (HR 1.219, p = 0.021) were independent predictors of these events. UA (HR 1.515, p = 0.040) and total cholesterol (TC) (HR 1.019, p = 0.034) were significant biochemical predictors as well. Elevated baseline Lp(a) combined with these factors was associated with an increased event rate, particularly after age 60. Conclusions: Traditional cardiovascular risk factors remain highly prevalent and predictive, underscoring the need for comprehensive cardiovascular risk management. Lp(a) remained stable and may serve as a complementary biomarker for risk stratification in JAKi-treated patients. Full article

Grounded in health behavior theory, this study examined patterns of preventive health behavior in a culturally diverse, multilingual region of northern Italy using data from a representative population survey (n = 2090). Preventive behaviors were assessed using the 16-item Good Health Practices (GHP-16) scale. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified five behavioral profiles, ranging from ‘Globally Low Engagers’ to ‘Comprehensive High Engagers’. Binary logistic regression compared ‘Globally Low Engagers’ to ‘Broadly Moderate Preventers’, examining predictors including gender, age, education, language, chronic disease status, health literacy (HLS-EU-Q16), patient activation (PAM-10), mistrust of health information, living situation, and healthcare employment. The results showed that men, younger adults, individuals with low patient activation, those living alone, and respondents with high mistrust of health information had higher odds of belonging to the low engagement group. Health literacy and language group membership were not significantly associated with the profile membership. Item-level comparisons revealed gender differences in information-seeking, oral hygiene, and dietary behaviors, with men reporting lower engagement. These findings support a segmentation-based understanding of preventive health behavior and highlight the need to address personal capacities and contextual barriers in interventions while challenging assumptions of uniformly higher female health vigilance. In China, grandparents play a significant role in childrearing. This study aims to identify latent profiles of intergenerational parenting styles and explore their impact on grandchildren’s behavioral outcomes. A total of 1432 Chinese children (Mage = 12.58 years; 45.25% boys) completed questionnaires assessing perceived grandparenting styles, while fathers and mothers independently reported their own parenting practices. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) identified three distinct parenting profiles: “Grandparents Positive–Parents Negative” (GP–PN, 18.37%), “Grandparents Positive–Parents Positive” (GP–PP, 59.15%), and “Grandparents Negative–Parents Positive” (GN–PP, 22.48%). Regression analyses revealed that the number of siblings, grade level, and grandparent type could significantly predict profile membership. Notably, consistent and positive intergenerational parenting styles were associated with fewer problem behaviors in children. Furthermore, the relationship between parenting profiles and problem behaviors was mediated by the quality of the grandparent–parent relationship. These findings suggested that grandparents and parents should coordinate their parenting styles when raising grandchildren together. Full article

Background: TGF-β is an immunosuppressive cytokine. Its signaling pathway plays a role in anti-inflammatory responses. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a clinical consequence of atherosclerosis, which manifests as chronic inflammation and involves platelet mediators, including TGF-β. The aim of this study is to validate the diagnostic utility of TGF-β levels in relation to classical and molecular risk factors for CAD. Methods: The study group included 25 women and 75 men, all aged up to 55 and 50 years, respectively, who had been diagnosed with early-onset CAD. Fasting blood samples were taken to measure plasma levels of TGF-β, sCD36, PCSK9, TNF, VEGF, IL-6, and E-selectin using the ELISA method. Furthermore, a full lipid profile, apolipoproteins (Lp(a), ApoA1, and ApoB), C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and blood morphology were analyzed at the Central Hospital Laboratory. A physical examination was also performed. Results: Positive associations were observed between TGF-β concentration and TNF, platelet count, PTC, and triglyceride levels. TNF and platelet concentration were significant independent predictors of increased plasma TGF-β levels. None of the clinical parameters showed statistically significant associations with plasma TGF-β concentration. Conclusions: Our research has demonstrated that TGF-β levels, including circulating TNF, triglycerides, and platelets, are linked to specific biochemical risk factors in early-onset CAD cases. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β plaques, tau hyperphosphorylation, and chronic neuroinflammation. Emerging evidence suggests a crucial role of lipid signaling pathways in AD pathogenesis, particularly those mediated by autotaxin (ATX) and lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). ATX, an enzyme responsible for LPA production, has been implicated in neuroinflammatory processes, blood–brain barrier dysfunction, and neuronal degeneration. LPA signaling, through its interaction with specific G-protein-coupled receptors, influences neuroinflammation, synaptic plasticity, and tau pathology, all of which contribute to AD progression. This review synthesizes recent findings on the ATX/LPA axis in AD, exploring its potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target. Understanding the mechanistic links between ATX, LPA, and AD pathology may open new avenues for disease-modifying strategies. Full article

(1) Background: This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to investigate family patterns of paternal and maternal responses to adolescents’ discrete emotions (happiness, sadness, and anger) and examined the relationship between these profiles and demographic factors, as well as adolescents’ emotion adjustment (emotion regulation and depressive symptoms). (2) Methods: A sample of 666 adolescents reported parental responses and their emotional adjustment; their mothers provided family information. (3) Results: (a) The LPA identified four profiles for adolescent happiness, including high enhancing but low dampening and neglect from both parents (Consistent Supportive); low enhancing but high dampening and neglect from both parents (Consistent Unsupportive); low to moderate scores on each response from both parents (Consistent Disengaging); and high maternal dampening and neglect but relatively low scores on the paternal response (Inconsistent). There were two profiles for sadness (Consistent Supportive, Consistent Unsupportive) and three for anger (Consistent Supportive, Consistent Unsupportive, Consistent Disengaging). (b) Parents with boys, higher incomes, better education, and greater marital satisfaction were likely to be classified into the Consistent Supportive profile across emotions. (c) When adolescents perceived their parents with the Consistent Supportive profile, they would show the best emotional adjustment; while for parents with the Inconsistent profile (for happiness) and the Consistent Unsupportive profile, the adolescents had the poorest outcome. Interestingly, adolescents who perceived their parents as fitting the Consistent Disengaging profile (especially for anger) exhibited comparatively less adverse adjustment. (4) Implications: A person-centered approach highlights different patterns of emotion socialization, underscores the importance of fostering parental cooperation and supportive responses to adolescents’ happiness, and suggests that joint disengagement from anger may promote healthier emotional development. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether the movement patterns and mental health of university teachers changed after returning to on-site class activities following the COVID-19 lockdown. Specifically, it compared levels of physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior time (SBT), active breaks (ABs), and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress among university teachers during online and on-site teaching periods. We also analyzed the association between movement patterns with psychological and anthropometric variables. Methods: University teachers who engaged in online teaching activities because of the COVID-19 restrictions and returned to on-site classes were included. Each teacher wore an accelerometer and answered the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales. The following parameters were assessed: SBT, light (LPA), moderate (MPA), and vigorous (VPA) (min/day); moderate–vigorous PA (MVPA) (min/week); steps/day and ABs/day. Results: Thirty-seven teachers with complete data from both phases were included. Once the on-site teaching activities resumed, LPA (9 min/day), MPA (6 min/day), total PA (20 min/day), MVPA (49 min/week), and steps/day (1100) significantly increased. While SBT showed no changes, ABs/day bouts increased. Depression and stress symptoms improved upon returning to on-site teaching activities. A positive association was identified between SBT and waist circumference (WC). There were negative associations between steps/day and MVPA with body mass index (BMI), steps/day with WC, and LPA with stress symptoms. Conclusions: Upon returning to on-site teaching activities, PA levels, steps/day, and ABs/day bouts all increased, although SBT remained elevated compared with during the lockdown. The teachers’ psychological symptoms improved. PA was associated with better health markers, while SBT was associated with increased WC. Full article

Background/Objectives: Atypical sensory processing is increasingly recognized as a transdiagnostic dimension of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), with critical implications for emotional and behavioral regulation. This study aimed to identify distinct sensory profiles in preschool children with NDDs and to examine their associations with emotional–behavioral and cognitive/developmental functioning. Methods: A total of 263 children (aged 21–71 months) diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), language disorder (LD), or other NDDs (ONDD) were recruited. Sensory processing was assessed using the SPM-P, emotional–behavioral functioning was assessed via the CBCL 1½–5, and cognitive/developmental levels were assessed through standardized instruments. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted to identify sensory subtypes. Group comparisons and multinomial logistic regression were used to examine profile characteristics and predictors of profile membership. Results: Three sensory profiles emerged: (1) Multisystemic Sensory Dysfunction (20.1%), characterized by pervasive sensory and emotional difficulties, primarily observed in ASD; (2) Typical Sensory Processing (44.9%), showing normative sensory and emotional functioning, predominantly LD; and (3) Mixed Subclinical Sensory Processing (35%), with subclinical-range scores across multiple sensory and emotional domains, spanning all diagnoses. Higher cognitive functioning and fewer internalizing symptoms significantly predicted membership in the typical profile. A gradient of symptom severity was observed across profiles, with the Multisystemic group showing the most pronounced emotional–behavioral impairments. Conclusions: Distinct sensory–emotional phenotypes were identified across diagnostic categories, supporting a dimensional model of neurodevelopment. Sensory profiles were strongly associated with emotional functioning, independently of diagnostic status. Early sensory assessment may therefore offer clinically meaningful insights into emotional vulnerability and inform targeted interventions in preschool populations with NDDs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease worldwide. An increased lipoprotein A (LpA) level is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease in children. Genetic polymorphisms of the LPA gene may play an important role in susceptibility to obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of LPA rs10455872 polymorphism with the risk and clinical phenotypes of childhood obesity. Methods: This study included 103 children with obesity and 77 healthy controls. Genotyping of the LPA rs10455872 polymorphism was performed using real-time PCR. Results: The genotype distributions of the LPA rs10455872 polymorphism did not differ significantly between children with obesity and healthy children (p = 0.563). A marked difference in insulin levels was observed between children with obesity carrying the AG (16.90 IU/mL) and AA (25.57 IU/mL) genotypes. A marked difference was also observed in CRP levels between children with obesity with the AG (2.31 mg/L) and AA (4.25 mg/L) genotypes. After correcting for multiple comparisons using the false discovery rate (FDR), significant differences were found between AG and AA genotypes in vitamin B12 (adjusted p = 0.024). Serum iron showed a borderline association (adjusted p = 0.072). A statistically significant correlation was found between the metabolic syndrome index and body fat ratio among children with obesity with the AA genotype (p = 0.028). Conclusions: Although limited by the small number of children with obesity with the AG genotype, some differences were noted between the AG and AA genotypes. These exploratory findings require further investigation in adequately powered studies. In children with obesity with the AA genotype, the metabolic syndrome index increases as the body fat ratio increases. Full article

Background/Objectives: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) experience chronic health problems and significant metabolic burden. Timely identification of CCS at higher metabolic risk requires novel biomarkers. Irisin, a novel myokine/adipokine has been associated with metabolic, bone and reproductive diseases, but its role in the health of CCS is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine irisin concentrations in children and adolescent CCS (vs. controls) and their association with metabolic, bone and hormonal parameters. Methods: Children and adolescent CCS, aged 8–18 years, as well as healthy controls, underwent a detailed physical, body composition, biochemical, hormonal and serum irisin assessment at least 6 months post-treatment. Results: A total of 59 children and adolescents (36 CCS, 23 controls; mean age ± SD 12.8 ± 2.9 years; 10 prepubertal, 49 pubertal) participated in the study. Serum irisin concentrations (ng/mL) were significantly lower in CCS than controls [median (IQR) 6.54 (4.12) vs. 11.70 (8.75) ng/mL, respectively, p < 0.001]. In the total study sample, serum irisin was correlated negatively with LH (rs = −0.314, p < 0.05), CRP (rs = −0.366, p < 0.005), age (rs = −0.323, p < 0.05) and positively with ALP (rs = 0.328, p < 0.05). Serum irisin was also positively correlated with ApoB and Lpa (rs = 0.410 and 0.421, respectively, p < 0.05) in CCS, and with PTH (r = 0.542, p < 0.005) in controls. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated parathyroid hormone (PTH) as the only independent variable affecting irisin concentrations. Conclusions: Study results reinforce the irisin–PTH interplay hypothesis. Future studies are needed to clarify the potential role of irisin as a bone biomarker of CCS in childhood and adolescence. A clear understanding of one’s identity is essential for adolescents to lead a meaningful and purposeful life. We investigated the relationship between self-concept clarity and meaning in life among 2288 adolescents through a cross-sectional survey, using both variable-centered and person-centered approaches. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between self-concept clarity and meaning in life among Chinese adolescents, as well as its dimensions. Three distinct profiles of self-concept clarity were identified among adolescents: high, medium, and low. The profile with high self-concept clarity had the highest meaning in life, followed by the moderate self-concept clarity profile, while the low self-concept clarity group had the lowest meaning in life. The findings underscore the enduring impact of self-concept clarity on adolescents’ meaning in life, affirming its central function within the self-concept structure in shaping meaning in life. Optimizing Museum Acoustics: How Absorption Magnitude and Surface Location of Finishing Materials Influence Acoustic Performance

The architecture of contemporary museums often emphasizes visual aesthetics, such as large volumes, open-plan layouts, and highly reflective finishes, resulting in acoustic challenges, such as excessive reverberation, poor speech intelligibility, elevated background noise, and reduced privacy. This study quantified the impact of surface—specific absorption treatments on acoustic metrics across eight gallery spaces. Room impulse responses calibrated virtual models, which simulated nine absorption scenarios (low, medium, and high on ceilings, floors, and walls) and evaluated reverberation time (T20), speech transmission index (STI), clarity (C50), distraction distance (rD), Spatial Decay Rate of Speech (D2,S), and Speech Level at 4 m (Lp,A,S,4m). The results indicate that going from concrete to a wooden floor yields the most rapid T20 reductions (up to −1.75 s), ceiling treatments deliver the greatest STI and C50 gains (e.g., STI increases of +0.16), and high-absorption walls maximize privacy metrics (D2,S and Lp,A,S,4m). A linear regression model further predicted the STI from T20, total absorption (Sabins), and room volume, with an 84.9% conditional R2, enabling ±0.03 accuracy without specialized testing. These findings provide empirically derived, surface-specific “first-move” guidelines for architects and acousticians, underscoring the necessity of integrating acoustics early in museum design to balance auditory and visual objectives and enhance the visitor experience. Background: The role of physical activity in early recovery following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) remains unclear, particularly regarding potential sex differences. This study examined the effects of physical activity on pain, self-estimation, and strength recovery after ARCR in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Patients who underwent ARCR were classified into high physical activity (HPA, n = 94) and low physical activity (LPA, n = 99) groups based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASESs) score for self-estimation were assessed preoperatively and at 6, 12, and 24 weeks postoperatively. Isokinetic shoulder strength was measured at the same intervals except for the 6-week assessment. Results: All groups demonstrated significant improvements in pain reduction and self-estimation over time (p < 0.05). At 6 and 12 weeks, the HPA group showed significantly lower VAS scores and higher ASES scores than the LPA group (p < 0.05). Notably, at 12 weeks, men in the LPA group exhibited pain levels comparable to the HPA group, whereas women in the LPA group continued to report significantly higher pain levels (p < 0.05). Isokinetic strength assessment revealed greater flexion and external rotation strength in the HPA group at 12 weeks (p < 0.05), though no significant between-group differences were observed at 24 weeks. Conclusions: Higher physical activity levels were associated with better early pain relief and self-estimation after ARCR, particularly within the first 12 weeks. These findings suggest that structured physical activity may enhance postoperative outcomes, with potential sex-based differences in pain perception. Full article

Background/Objectives: In the context of active ageing, functional assessment is key to preserving autonomy in older women. The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a practical tool for estimating general health, but its results can be influenced by various factors. This study analysed cardiorespiratory variations during the 6MWT in older women according to their physical activity level and age-related variables such as pain, sarcopenia, frailty, and motivation to exercise. Methods: A total of 163 older women with musculoskeletal pain, but without cardiac or respiratory conditions, were classified into groups with high (HPA), moderate (MPA), and low (LPA) physical activity. During the 6MWT, heart rate (HR), dyspnoea, and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded. Pain, sarcopenia, frailty, and motivation to exercise were also assessed. A repeated-measures multivariate analysis of (co)variance (RM-MANCOVA) was performed. Results: The results showed differences in HR depending on the level of physical activity, conditioned by sarcopenia (p < 0.05) and walked distance (p < 0.001), and in dyspnoea conditioned by pain perception (p < 0.01) and social (p < 0.001) and psychological (p < 0.05) motivation to exercise. There were also differences in SpO2 depending on the level of physical activity (p < 0.0001). There were differences between the HPA group and both the MPA and LPA group, which had higher HR, higher dyspnoea, and lower SpO2 when undergoing the 6MWT test. Conclusions: To accurately interpret 6MWT results in older adult women, it is essential to consider physical activity level, perceived pain, sarcopenia, and motivation to exercise, as these factors influence HR, dyspnoea, and SpO2. These variables should guide physical activity recommendations for healthy ageing. Full article
