Compared to reinforcing concrete with steel bars, rebars—made of fiber-reinforced plastic—have a high potential for resource savings in the construction industry due to their corrosion resistance. For the large-volume market of reinforcement elements, efficient manufacturing processes must be developed to ensure the best possible bond behavior between concrete and rebar. In contrast to established FRP-rebars made with thermosetting materials, the use of a thermoplastic matrix enables surface profiling without severing the edge fibers as well as subsequent bending of the bar. The rebars to be produced in this study are based on the process of reactive thermoplastic pultrusion of continuously glass fiber reinforced aPA6. Their surface must enable a mechanical interlocking between the reinforcement bar and concrete. Concepts for a profiling device have been methodically developed and evaluated. The resulting concept of a double wheel embossing unit with a variable infeed and an infrared preheating section is built as a prototype, implemented in a pultrusion line, and further optimized. For a comprehensive understanding of the embossing process, reinforcement bars are manufactured, characterized, and evaluated under parameter variation according to a statistical experimental plan. The present study demonstrates the relationship between the infeed, preheating temperature, and haul-off speed with respect to the embossing depth, which is equivalent to the rib height. No degradation of the Young’s modulus was observed as a result of the profiling process. Full article

This study presents the development and mechanical characterization of a full-scale helmet manufactured from a polyester matrix composite reinforced with woven jute fabric using vacuum infusion. Laminates with two and four reinforcement layers were produced and assembled using four joining configurations: seamless, stitched, bonded, and hybrid (bonded + stitched). Tensile tests were performed according to ASTM D3039, while frontal and lateral compression tests followed ABNT NBR 7471, aiming to evaluate the influence of laminate thickness and joining strategy on mechanical performance. In tension, the seamless configuration reached maximum loads of 0.80 kN (two layers) and 1.60 kN (four layers), while the hybrid configuration achieved 0.79 kN and 1.43 kN, respectively. Stitched and bonded joints showed lower strength. Under compression, increasing the laminate thickness from two to four layers reduced frontal elongation from 15.09 mm to 9.97 mm and lateral elongation from 13.73 mm to 7.24 mm, corresponding to stiffness gains of 50.3% and 87.3%, respectively. Statistical analysis (ANOVA/Tukey, α = 0.05) confirmed significant effects of thickness and joint configuration. Although vacuum infusion is a well-established process, the novelty of this work lies in its application to a full-scale natural-fiber helmet, combined with a systematic evaluation of joining strategies and a direct correlation between standardized tensile behavior and structural compression performance. The four-layer hybrid laminate exhibited the best balance between strength, stiffness, and deformation capacity. Full article

This study evaluated the ballistic performance and failure mechanisms of epoxy-based hybrid laminates reinforced with abaca/UHMWPE and pineapple leaf fiber (PALF)/UHMWPE fabrics fabricated by using vacuum-assisted hand lay-up. Ballistic tests utilized 9 mm full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds (~426 m/s impact velocity) under NIJ Standard Level IIIA conditions (44 mm maximum allowable BFS). This experimental test was complemented by finite element analysis (FEA) incorporating an energy-based bilinear fracture criterion to simulate matrix cracking and fiber pull-out. The results showed that abaca/UHMWPE composites exhibited lower backface signature (BFS) and depth of penetration (DOP) values (~23 mm vs. ~42 mm BFS; ~7 mm vs. ~9 mm DOP) than PALF/UHMWPE counterparts, reflecting superior interfacial adhesion and more ductile failure modes. Accelerated weathering produced matrix microcracking and delamination in both systems, reducing overall ballistic resistance. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed improved fiber–matrix bonding in abaca composites and interfacial voids in PALF laminates. The FEA results reproduced major failure modes, such as delamination, fiber–matrix debonding, and petaling, and identified stress concentration zones that agreed with experimental observations, though the extent of delamination was slightly underpredicted. Overall, the study demonstrated that abaca/UHMWPE hybridcomposites offer enhanced ballistic performance and durability compared with PALF/UHMWPE laminates, supporting their potential as sustainable alternatives for lightweight protective applications. The mechanical properties of carbon fiber composites (CFRCs) are governed by the carbon fibers (CFs) themselves and the fiber–matrix interface (FMI), with the synergy between the two being crucial. This study focused on how microstructural heterogeneity affects the compression after impact (CAI) of the same epoxy resin (EP) composites. The research was conducted using two variants of dry-jet wet-spun T800G CFs, labeled CF-low and CF-high. The results indicated that while CF-low exhibited a higher number of deep axial grooves and a greater surface micro-zone compressive modulus, their pronounced skin–core structure and the excessively strong interfacial bonding formed by mechanical interlocking aggravated fiber core collapse and stress concentration under mechanical loading. In contrast, the homogeneous structure and moderate interfacial characteristics of CF-high facilitated efficient stress transfer between the CFs and EP. Compared with CF-low composites, CF-high composites exhibited a 9% increase in CAI strength and a 35% reduction in damage area, significantly improving the damage tolerance of the composites. This research underscores that optimizing the synergy between the fiber properties and the interfacial behavior is key to enhancing CFRC performance. Full article

Agave lechuguilla fibers exhibit high tensile strength, low density and durability, but their use in natural rubber composites is underexplored. This study investigates alkaline-treated fibers (149–180 µm) as reinforcements for natural latex. Fibers were pretreated with a methanol–acetone mixture, followed by immersion in 10% NaOH at 70 °C for 1 h, removing lignin and hemicellulose as confirmed by FTIR and SEM. Thermogravimetric analysis showed three weight-loss stages: moisture/volatiles (9.4%), hemicellulose (peak at 341 °C), and cellulose/lignin (peak at 482 °C), with <3% residue above 500 °C. Treated composites exhibited enhanced tensile strength (4.68 ± 1.2 MPa vs. 1.3 ± 0.8 MPa for untreated) and elongation at break (530 ± 51% vs. 452 ± 32%). Hardness increased from 21.8 (neat latex) to 30.3, and compression resistance was improved. Optical microscopy revealed strong fiber–matrix adhesion with uniform dispersion. Alkaline treatment enhances interfacial bonding and mechanical performance, making A. lechuguilla fibers a sustainable reinforcement for eco-friendly composites in automotive, construction, and packaging sectors. In this study, we developed a method for creating an active layer based on a composite material consisting of chitosan and an anisotropic network of nickel fibers (Chitosan/Ni + NiFs). Using this chitosan biopolymer matrix and anisotropic network, we achieved a high specific surface area for the catalytic material, high lateral conductivity for the layer, and stable characteristics, ultimately leading to increased overall electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Through linear voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy, we identified the mechanism and kinetics of the HER in the developed system. The overpotential of the electrochemical reaction was 213 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Chromatographic analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the Chitosan/Ni + NiFs system in the HER. Our results show how the chitosan biopolymer matrix and oriented nickel fiber network influence charge transfer and electrode reactions, as reflected in the activation energies of hydrogen bonds on the electrocatalytic layers. These findings show that it is feasible to combine a biopolymer matrix and an anisotropic nickel fiber network to create effective electrocatalysts. This approach enables the development of environmentally friendly electrolytic hydrogen production technologies. Full article

This study investigates the influence of silane coupling agents and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the mechanical, durability, and thermal performance of CFRP rebars manufactured using a pilot-scale pultrusion process. The incorporation of additives extended epoxy working time without causing adverse viscosity effects during processing. Silane-modified CFRP rebars exhibited the highest mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of approximately 2649 MPa, an elastic modulus of 156 GPa, and improved bond strength with concrete, which is attributed to enhanced fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion. MWCNT-modified rebars showed slightly lower tensile strength but demonstrated superior thermal resistance, retaining the highest proportion of mechanical properties after exposure to 250 °C due to matrix reinforcement and crack-bridging effects. No significant degradation was observed under simulated marine exposure, while gradual reductions (up to ~7%) occurred in alkaline environments, with silane-modified rebars showing the greatest durability. These findings provide mechanistic insights and practical guidelines for optimizing epoxy formulations to enhance the structural and long-term performance of CFRP rebars. Full article

Electrospun polymeric nanofibers have emerged as promising materials for wound management owing to their high surface area, efficient exudate absorption and gas exchange, and extracellular-matrix-like architecture. This study investigates the fabrication of nanofiber dressings from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and hyaluronic acid (HA), prepared by fully aqueous electrospinning (without organic solvents) for potential wound-care applications. HA incorporation is expected to influence hydration and matrix interactions, properties that have been associated with modulation of wound healing in previous studies. However, the high solubility of PVA-based NFs in aqueous environments limits their use in biological applications. To address this issue, PVA/HA nanofibers were chemically crosslinked through a solid-state esterification process at 150 °C using biocompatible citric acid (CA). The electrospinning parameters were optimized to obtain PVA/HA fibers with diameters ranging from 130 to 200 nm, which were assembled to form mats with different porosity and intersection density. FTIR confirmed the formation of ester bonds, while DSC analysis showed an increase in Tg from 41 °C to about 55 °C and a slight decrease in Tm after crosslinking. Swelling and degradation analyses demonstrated a significant enhancement in hydrolytic stability, as the weight loss of the nanofiber mats decreased from ~90% in the non-crosslinked samples to less than 10% after 2 h of crosslinking. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed an increase in Young’s modulus from ~70 MPa to 230 MPa after crosslinking. Overall, the results demonstrate the stabilizing effect of citric-acid crosslinking on PVA/HA nanofibers and support their potential use in wound dressings under physiological conditions. This study presents a novel integrated manufacturing approach that combines fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing with in situ electrospinning to fabricate hierarchical composite structures composed of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. A mounting fixture was employed to enable layer-by-layer nanofiber deposition directly onto printed PLA layers in a continuous automated process, eliminating the need for prefabricated electrospun nanofiber mats. The influences of nozzle temperature (210–230 °C) and electrospinning time (5–15 min per layer) on mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties were systematically investigated. Optimal performance was achieved at an FDM nozzle temperature of 220 °C with 5 min of electrospinning time (sample E1), showing a 36.5% increase in tensile strength (71 MPa), a 33.3% increase in Young’s modulus (2.8 GPa), and a 62.0% increase in flexural strength (128 MPa) compared with the neat PLA. This enhancement resulted from the complete infiltration of molten PLA into the thin nanofiber mats, creating true fiber–matrix integration. Excessive nanofiber content (15 min ES) caused a 36.5% reduction in strength due to delamination and incomplete infiltration. Thermal analysis revealed a decrease in glass transition temperature (1.2 °C) and onset of thermal degradation (5.3–15.2 °C) with nanofiber integration. Fracture morphology confirmed that to achieve optimal properties, it was critical to balance the nanofiber reinforcement content with the depth of infiltration, as excessive content created poorly bonded interleaved layers. This integrated fabrication platform enables the production of lightweight hierarchical composites with multiscale, custom-made reinforcement for applications in biomedical scaffolds, protective equipment, and structural components. With the growing demand for sustainable and high-performance construction materials, alkali-activated materials (AAM) have attracted significant interest as eco-friendly al-ternatives to cement-based systems. Nevertheless, the tensile ductility and AAM–concrete interfacial bonding of polyethylene fiber-reinforced AAM remain insufficiently understood, and systematic knowledge on how activator modulus governs these multi-scale properties is still limited. This study aims to clarify how activator modulus (Ms = 0, 0.5, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4) influences the mechanical, interfacial, and microstructural behavior of an engineered AAM reinforced with polyethylene fibers. The effects are investigated through uniaxial tensile tests, single-fiber pull-out experiments, bond tests with concrete, and microstructural analyses (SEM, XRD, CT). Results show that an activator modulus of 1.1 yields the best overall performance, achieving a 28-day tensile strength of 3.77 MPa and ultimate tensile strain of 3.68%, representing increases of 231% and 64.6% compared with a modulus of 0. Microstructural observations confirmed that the optimized modulus promotes extensive gel formation, improves fiber–matrix interfacial bonding, and enhances strain-hardening with multiple microcracks. Interfacial tests further demonstrated that Ms strongly affects bond performance between AAM and concrete, with 1.0–1.1 providing balanced adhesion and matrix ductility, while excessive activation (Ms = 1.4) caused interfacial defects and bond deterioration. These findings deepen the understanding of the micromechanical role of activator modulus and provide guidance for the mix design of durable, high-ductility AAM suitable for sustainable infrastructure. Erosion of the leading edge is one of the most severe forms of damage in wind turbine blades, particularly in offshore wind farms. This degradation, mainly caused by rain, sand, and airborne particles through droplet impingement wear, significantly decreases blade aerodynamic efficiency and power output. Since blades, typically made of fiber-reinforced polymer composites, are the most expensive components of a turbine, developing protective coatings is essential. In this study, polyurethane (PU) composite coatings reinforced with titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles were added on glass fiber substrates by spray coating. The incorporation of TiO2 improved the mechanical and electrochemical performance of the PU coatings. FTIR and XRD confirmed that low TiO2 loadings (1 and 3 wt%) were well dispersed within the PU matrix due to hydrogen bonding between TiO2 –OH groups and PU –NH groups. The PU/TiO2 3% coating exhibited ~61% lower corrosion current density (I_corr) compared to neat PU, indicating superior corrosion resistance. Furthermore, uniform TiO2 dispersion resulted in statistically significant improvements (p < 0.05) in hardness, yield strength, elastic modulus, and adhesion strength. Overall, the PU/TiO2 coatings, particularly at 3 wt% loading, show strong potential as protective materials for wind turbine blades, given their enhanced mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance. Humidity monitoring is essential in industrial and scientific scenarios, yet remains challenging for compact EMI (electromagnetic interference)-immune sensors with high sensitivity and robust stability. A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) humidity sensor was developed, which incorporated LiCl@UIO-66 microfillers within a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel matrix. Structural characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirms that LiCl is confined or nanodispersed within intact UIO-66, and that interfacial ion–dipole/hydrogen-bonding exists between the composite and water. Systematic variation in coating time (30–720 min) reveals monotonic growth of the total wavelength shift with diminishing returns. A coating time of 4 h was found to yield a wavelength shift of approximately 0.38–0.40 nm, representing about 82% of the maximum shift observed at 12 h, while maintaining good quasi-linearity and favorable kinetics. Calibration demonstrates sensitivities of 6.7 pm/%RH for LiCl@UIO-66_33 and 10.6 pm/%RH for LiCl@UIO-66_51 over ~0–95%RH. Stepwise tests show response times t90 of ≈14 min for both composites, versus ≈30 min for UIO-66 and ≈55 min for neat PNIPAM. Long-term measurements on the 51 wt.% device are stable over the first ~20 days, with only slow drift thereafter, and repeated humidity cycling is reversible. The wavelength decreases monotonically during drying while settling time increases toward low RH. The synergy of hydrogel–MOF–salt underpins high sensitivity, accelerated transport, and practical stability, offering a scalable route to high-performance optical humidity sensing. Full article

Additive Manufacturing (AM) using Fused Layer Modelling (FLM) often results in polymer components with limited and highly anisotropic mechanical properties, exhibiting structural weaknesses in the layer direction (Z-direction) due to low interlaminar adhesion. The main objective of this work was to investigate and quantify these mechanical limitations and to develop strategies for their mitigation. Specifically, this study aimed to (1) characterize the anisotropic behavior of unreinforced Polycarbonate (PC) components, (2) evaluate the effect of continuous, unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber tape reinforcement on mechanical performance, and (3) validate experimental findings through Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to support predictive modeling of reinforced FLM structures. Methods involved experimental tensile and 3-point bending tests on specimens printed in all three spatial directions (X, Y, Z), validated against FEM simulations in ANSYS Composite PrepPost (ACP) using an orthotropic material model and the Hashin failure criterion. Results showed unreinforced samples had a pronounced anisotropy, with tensile strength reduced by over 70% in the Z direction. UD tape integration nearly eliminated this orthotropic behavior and led to strength gains of over 400% in tensile and flexural strength in the Z-direction. The FEM simulations showed very good agreement regarding initial stiffness and failure load. Targeted UD tape reinforcement effectively compensates for the weaknesses of FLM structures, although the quality of the tape–matrix bond and process reproducibility remain decisive factors for the reliability of the composite system, underscoring the necessity for targeted process optimization. In this work, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) from ash branch wood was used as reinforcement in a thermoplastic starch matrix to develop environmentally friendly materials. Pulp fibers and MFCs were characterized by SEM, TEM, and FTIR. Corn starch biofilms were prepared via casting, formulating eight biofilms with 5 and 10 wt% of MFC. Also, extracts of Muicle and Hibiscus were added to incorporate antibacterial properties. The biofilms were evaluated for mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties. Also, properties such as color, opacity, morphology, electrical conductivity, contact angle, and solubility, among others, were evaluated. The reinforced biofilms were homogeneous, dimensionally stable, and transparent with slight color changes. MFC incorporation enhanced hydrogen bonding, which increased the ultimate tensile strength from 11.2 MPa to approximately 19–21 MPa and the Young’s modulus from 809 MPa to 1034–1192 MPa. The presence of MFC also reduced solubility from 48.7% to 38.7–39.8% and decreased water vapor permeability by about 20–23% in biofilms with 10 wt% MFC. Gas barrier properties and the glass transition temperature depended on extract type and fiber content, indicating greater rigidity. The use of ash-based MFC encourages the implementation of circular economy strategies and the development of sustainable biocomposites. Full article

Recent comprehensive research (2023–2024) on basalt fiber-reinforced composites (BFRCs) has meticulously documented significant progress across diverse applications, including protective coatings, high-performance concrete, reinforcement bars, and advanced laminates. The central theme of these developments revolves around innovative composite design strategies that strategically incorporate basalt fibers to markedly enhance mechanical properties, durability, and protective capabilities against environmental challenges. Key advancements in synthesis methodologies highlight that the integration of BFs substantially improves abrasion and corrosion resistance, effectively inhibits crack propagation through superior fiber-matrix bonding, and confers exceptional thermal stability, with composites maintaining structural integrity at temperatures of 600–700 °C and demonstrating short-term resistance exceeding 900 °C. The underlying mechanisms for this enhanced performance are attributed to both chemical modifications—such as the application of silane-based coupling agents which improve interfacial adhesion—and physical–mechanical interlocking between the fibers and the matrix. These interactions facilitate efficient stress transfer, leading to a breakthrough in the overall multifunctional performance of the composites. Despite these promising results, the field continues to grapple with challenges, particularly concerning the long-term durability under sustained loads and harsh environments, and a notable lack of standardized global testing protocols hinders direct comparison and widespread certification. This review distinguishes itself by offering a critical synthesis of the latest findings, underscoring the immense application potential of BFRCs in critical sectors such as civil engineering for seismic retrofitting and structural strengthening, the automotive industry for lightweight yet robust components, and advanced passive fireproofing systems. Furthermore, it emphasizes the growing, innovative role of simulation techniques like finite element analysis (FEA) in predicting and optimizing the performance and design of these composites, thereby providing a robust scientific foundation for developing the next generation of high-performance, sustainable structural components.
