Electrical grids are undergoing a transformation driven by the increasing integration of renewable energy sources on the consumer side. This shift, alongside the electrification of consumption—particularly in areas such as electric mobility—has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. However, it is also contributing to a rise in electricity prices due to growing demand and infrastructure costs. Paradoxically, these higher prices serve as a catalyst for further investment in renewable energy technologies by reducing the payback periods of such systems. Recent European legislation has accelerated this transformation by mandating the liberalization of energy markets. This regulatory shift enables the emergence of prosumers—consumers who are also producers of energy—by granting them the right to generate, store, and trade electricity using the existing distribution grid. In this new landscape, photovoltaic systems represent a viable and increasingly attractive investment option for both households and businesses. This study presents an economic evaluation of photovoltaic system investments across different European countries, focusing on key indicators such as payback periods and the impact of local solar irradiation on the resulting electricity price. The analysis provides insight into the varying economic feasibility of distributed solar energy deployment, offering a comparative perspective that supports both policymakers and potential investors in making informed decisions about renewable energy adoption. This study examines the role of aggregators in the context of digital energy and the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). The primary economic functions of aggregators are examined, including their role in optimizing energy markets and enhancing the flexibility and resilience of electricity systems. Different business models are presented, including the Energy as a Service (EaaS) model, and the effects of aggregators’ participation in electricity markets and balancing markets are examined. Special attention is paid to models for optimizing trading strategies and energy storage management. A comparative assessment of two scenarios for the distribution of the energy mix between solar and wind energy in the period 2022–2024 is conducted, evaluating the necessary storage capacities to achieve energy sustainability. The study highlights the importance of aggregators for grid stability, the integration of RES, and achieving higher efficiency through digitalisation and decentralisation in the context of European energy policy and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Glocalization plays a vital role in promoting regionally embedded sustainable development by enabling territories to adapt global economic impulses to local capacities, values, and institutional frameworks. This paper develops a framework for the quantitative assessment of economic glocalization at the regional level, focusing on the European Union. Drawing on the conceptual metaphor of “refraction”, glocalization is interpreted as a transformation of global economic impulses as they pass through and interact with localized socio-economic structures. The authors construct a Glocalization Index System comprising three sub-indices: (1) Index of Generation of Globalization Impulses, (2) Index of Resistance to Globalization Impulses, and (3) Index of Transformation of Globalization Impulses. Each sub-index integrates normalized indicators related to regional creativity—conceptualized through the four “I”s: Institutions, Intelligence, Inspiration, and Infrastructure—as well as trade and investment dynamics. The empirical analysis reveals substantial interregional variation in glocalization capacities, with regions of Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland ranking among the most prominent generators and transformers of globalization impulses. Strong correlations are observed between the Resistance and Transformation indices, supporting the hypothesis that medium resistance levels contribute most effectively to transformation processes. By integrating both global (exogenous) and local (endogenous) dimensions, the proposed framework not only addresses a gap in economic literature but also offers a tool for guiding policies aimed at sustainable, adaptive, and innovation-driven regional development. This study investigates the flexural performance, tensile splitting strength, and fracture behaviour of self-compacting concrete (SCC) reinforced with polypropylene (PP) and basalt (BF) fibres. A total of eleven SCC mixtures with varying fibre types and volume fractions (0.025–0.25%) were tested at 7 and 28 days. In this study, the term high-performance concrete (HPC) refers to SCC mixtures with a 28-day compressive strength exceeding 60 MPa, as commonly accepted in European standards and literature. The control SCC achieved 68.2 MPa at 28 days. While fibre addition enhanced the tensile and flexural properties, it reduced workability, demonstrating the trade-off between mechanical performance and flowability in high-performance SCC. The experimental results demonstrate that both fibre types improve the tensile behaviour of SCC, with distinct performance patterns. PP fibres, owing to their flexibility and crack-bridging capability, were particularly effective at early ages, enhancing the splitting tensile strength by up to 45% and flexural toughness by over 300% at an optimal dosage of 0.125%. In contrast, BF fibres significantly increased the 28-day toughness (up to 15.7 J) and post-cracking resistance due to their superior stiffness and bonding with the matrix. However, high fibre contents adversely affected workability, particularly in BF-reinforced mixes. The findings highlight a dosage-sensitive behaviour, with optimum performance observed at 0.05–0.125% for PP and 0.125–0.25% for BF. While PP fibres improve crack distribution and early-age ductility, BF fibres offer higher stiffness and energy absorption in post-peak regimes. Statistical analysis (ANOVA and Tukey’s test) confirmed significant differences in the mechanical performance among fibre-reinforced mixes. The study provides insights into selecting appropriate fibre types and dosages for SCC structural applications. Further research on hybrid fibre systems and long-term durability is recommended. The results contribute to sustainable concrete design by promoting enhanced performance with low-volume, non-metallic fibres. Full article

This paper investigates the cultural, spiritual, and ecological use and value of fish by-products in the material practices of Alaska Native (Indigenous Peoples are the descendants of the populations who inhabited a geographical region at the time of colonisation and who retain some or all of their own social, economic, cultural, and political institutions. In this paper, I use the terms “Indigenous” and “Native” interchangeably. In some countries, one of these terms may be favoured over the other.) and Greenlandic Inuit women. It aims to uncover how fish remnants—skins, bones, bladders, vertebrae, and otoliths—were transformed through tanning, dyeing, and sewing into garments, containers, tools, oils, glues, and adornments, reflecting sustainable systems of knowledge production rooted in Arctic Indigenous lifeways. Drawing on interdisciplinary methods combining Indigenist research, ethnographic records, and sustainability studies, the research contextualises these practices within broader environmental, spiritual, and social frameworks. The findings demonstrate that fish-based technologies were not merely utilitarian but also carried symbolic meanings, linking wearers to ancestral spirits, animal kin, and the marine environment. These traditions persisted even after European contact and the introduction of glass trade beads, reflecting continuity and cultural adaptability. The paper contributes to academic discourse on Indigenous innovation and environmental humanities by offering a culturally grounded model of zero-waste practice and reciprocal ecology. It argues that such ancestral technologies are directly relevant to contemporary sustainability debates in fashion and material design. By documenting these underexamined histories, the study provides valuable insight into Indigenous resilience and offers a critical framework for integrating Indigenous knowledge systems into current sustainability practices. The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and its underlying market structure play a central role in the EU’s climate policy. This study analyses how the network of trading relationships within the EU ETS has evolved from a hub-dominated architecture to one marked by structural change and the emergence of new trading dynamics. Using transaction data from Phases I–IV, we apply complex network analysis to assess changes in connectivity, centrality, and community structure. We then construct a Digital Twin of the EU ETS, integrating graph neural networks and logistic regression models to simulate the entry of new participants and predict future trading links. The results indicate shifts in network composition and connectivity, especially in Phase IV, where regulatory innovations and institutional mechanisms appear to play a key role. While our analysis focuses on structural dynamics, these patterns may have broader implications for market performance and policy effectiveness. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring the evolving trading network alongside price signals to support a resilient, efficient, and environmentally credible carbon market. Full article

As global climate change intensifies and the transition to clean energy accelerates, lithium-ion batteries—critical components of electric vehicles—are becoming increasingly vital in international trade networks. This study investigates the structural evolution and determinants of the electric vehicle lithium-ion battery trade network among European Union (EU) member states from 2012 to 2023, employing social network analysis and the multiple regression quadratic assignment procedure method. The findings demonstrate the transformation of the network from a centralized and loosely connected structure, with Germany as the dominant hub, to a more interconnected and decentralized system in which Poland and Hungary emerge as the leading players. Key network metrics, such as the density, clustering coefficients, and average path lengths, reveal increased regional trade connectivity and enhanced supply chain efficiency. The analysis identifies geographic and economic proximity, logistics performance, labor cost differentials, energy resource availability, and venture capital investment as significant drivers of trade flows, highlighting the interaction among spatial, economic, and infrastructural factors in shaping the network. Based on these findings, this study underscores the need for targeted policy measures to support Central and Eastern European countries, including investment in logistics infrastructure, technological innovation, and regional cooperation initiatives, to strengthen their integration into the supply chain and bolster their export capacity. Furthermore, fostering balanced inter-regional collaborations is essential in building a resilient trade network. Continued investment in transportation infrastructure and innovation is recommended to sustain the EU’s competitive advantage in the global electric vehicle lithium-ion battery supply chain. Energy security is a global and strategic issue that is vital to national economic and social development. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has profoundly changed the world’s energy trade structure and brought great challenges to global energy security, especially to the European Union (EU). Under this background, this study tries to construct a conceptual framework for energy security from trade and selects the EU as a case to analyze its energy security evolution at both the regional and national scales. The findings of this paper are as follows. (1) In the context of energy transition, oil and gas remain pivotal components due to their longstanding historical presence. However, they are also the most susceptible elements within the EU’s energy system. (2) The level of oil security within the EU is higher than that of natural gas. The level of oil security in member countries varies considerably, with significant geographic disparities. Aside from the exception of the Netherlands and Denmark, the majority of member countries exhibit a consistently low level of natural gas security. (3) From 1991 to 2021, the EU’s energy security pattern underwent significant changes, exhibiting a general downward trend due to the increased utilization of natural gas. In light of the aforementioned research outcomes, this paper seeks to offer policy recommendations for the enhancement of the EU’s energy security. Full article

Italy supplies about one-seventh of the European Union’s total glass production, and the sector’s sizeable resource demands make it a linchpin of national industrial strategy. With growing environmental regulations and the push for resource efficiency, Material Flow Accounting has become essential for companies to stay compliant and advance sustainability. The investigation concentrates on Italy’s glass industry to clarify its material requirements, ecological footprint, and overall sustainability performance. STAN software v2, combined with an Economy-Wide Material Flow Accounting (EW-MFA) framework, models the national economy as a single integrated input–output system. By tracking each material stream from initial extraction to end-of-life, the analysis delivers a cradle-to-grave picture of the sector’s environmental impacts. During the 2021 production year, Italy’s glass makers drew on a total of 10.5 million tonnes (Mt) of material inputs, supplied 76% (7.9 Mt) from domestic quarries, and 24% (2.6 Mt) via imports. Outbound trade in finished glass removed 1.0 Mt, leaving 9.5 Mt recorded as Domestic Material Consumption (DMC). Within that balance, 6.6 Mt (63%) was locked into long-lived stock, whereas 2.9 Mt (28%) left the system as waste streams and airborne releases, including roughly 2.1 Mt of CO2. At present, the post-consumer cult substitutes only one-third of the furnace batch, signalling considerable scope for improved circularity. When benchmarked against EU-27 aggregates for 2021, Italy registers a NAS/DMI ratio of 0.63 (EU median 0.55) and a DPO/DMI ratio of 0.28 (EU 0.31), indicating a higher share of material retained in stock and slightly lower waste generated per ton of input. A detailed analysis of glass production identifies critical stages, environmental challenges, and areas for improvement. Quantitative data on material use, waste generation, and recycling rates reveal the industry’s environmental footprint. The findings emphasise Economy-Wide Material Flow Accounting’s value in evaluating and improving sustainability efforts, offering insights for policymakers and industry leaders to drive resource efficiency and sustainable resource management. Results help scholars and policymakers in the analysis of the Italian glass industry context, supporting in the data gathering, while also in the use of this methodology for other sectors. The transformation of the energy market in Poland over the last 20 years has been a process deeply rooted in European Union policies and initiatives, including emissions trading (EU ETS), climate and energy packages and the European Green Deal. Poland, historically dependent on coal, continues to struggle with systemic problems such as low grid flexibility, ageing infrastructure, high CO2 emissions and the socio-economic costs of the transition in mining regions. The research methodology is based on analysis of reports, scientific articles, EU documents and statistical data. So far, there is a research gap in the research area, mainly concerning two problems. The first is the lack of a multifaceted, integrated analysis of Poland’s energy transition, taking into account not only technological changes and RES participation, but also systemic problems (infrastructure, policy, social acceptance). The second, in turn, relates to the need to identify the impact of EU regulation as a driving force, not just an obstacle. The objective of the article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Polish energy market in the context of the EU over the past 20 years, covering (1) systemic problems of the Polish power sector, (2) the impact of key EU initiatives and regulations, (3) the development of renewable energy sources, (4) the modernisation and digitalisation of the grid, (5) current and future market trends, and (6) the main challenges of the transition. The analysis shows that Poland’s electricity sector is still dominated by coal, but its share is steadily decreasing, from ~85% in 2015 to about 60% in 2023. At the same time, the share of renewable energy sources (mainly wind and photovoltaics) has increased from ~10% to ~27%. Nevertheless, the gap with the EU average remains significant. Full article

To mitigate CO2 emissions from raw material decomposition and reduce the consumption of natural resources, this study investigated the use of mussel and oyster shell waste as secondary raw materials in earthenware production. Mineralogical, chemical and thermal analyses confirmed their suitability as sources of bio-calcite. Specimens incorporating various replacement levels (0–100%) showed no significant differences in key properties. Plates produced with mussel-derived bio-calcite in a pilot plant exhibited comparable properties to standard ceramics, demonstrating their industrial viability. CO2 emissions were reduced by 14% and 10% in mussel and oyster shell-based ceramics, respectively, potentially saving up to 53 kgCO2eq/t under the European Emissions Trading System, if the shells are classified as by-products. These findings demonstrated that bivalve shell waste can effectively replace mineral calcite in earthenware products, reducing CO2 emissions and virgin raw material consumption, diverting waste from landfills and promoting sustainability in the ceramic industry. Steam is widely used in industry as a heat carrier for thermal processes and is primarily generated by gas-fired steam boilers. The decarbonization of industrial thermal demand relies on the capability of clean and renewable technologies to provide steam through reliable and cost-effective systems. Concentrating solar thermal technologies are attracting attention as a heat source for industrial steam generation. In addition, electricity-driven high-temperature heat pumps can provide heat using either renewable or grid electricity by upgrading ambient or waste heat to the required temperature level. In this study, linear Fresnel solar collectors and high-temperature heat pumps driven by photovoltaics are considered heat sources for steam generation in industrial processes. Energetic and economic analyses are performed across the European countries to assess and compare their performances. The results demonstrate that for a given available area for the solar field, solar thermal systems provide a higher annual energy yield in southern countries and at lower costs than heat pumps. On the other hand, heat pumps driven by photovoltaics provide higher annual energy for decreasing solar radiation conditions (central and northern Europe), although it leads to higher costs than solar thermal systems. A hybrid scheme combining the two technologies is the favorable option in central Europe, allowing a trade-off between the costs and the energy yield per unit area. Full article

Mining has significantly shaped Eastern European economies, particularly during their transition from centrally planned to market-oriented systems. While abundant natural resources can lead to a “resource curse” that hinders economic growth, they also offer opportunities for sustainable development if managed effectively. This study investigates the dynamics of mineral resource rents in Eastern Europe, shaped by economic freedom, urbanization, educational achievement, and international trade, from 1990 to 2021. Using methods such as MMQR, AMG Robustness Analysis, CCEMG, fixed effects, cointegration, Granger causality, and unit root tests, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of these relationships. The findings reveal that educational achievement reduces reliance on mineral resource rents by fostering human capital and supporting economic diversification. Urbanization similarly decreases resource dependency by promoting innovation and technological advancement. Trade openness also shows a negative link with mineral rents, suggesting that global integration facilitates shifts toward more advanced, technology-driven sectors. Economic freedom presents mixed results, highlighting the need for strong governance to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes. This study is novel in integrating these factors into a unified framework, specifically applied to Eastern Europe’s post-communist transition, a region often overlooked in global resource studies. The results contribute most directly to Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education by demonstrating how human capital development reduces resource dependence and promotes economic resilience, and to Sustainable Development Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, by showing that trade openness and economic diversification can drive sustainable economic progress. Ultimately, the study offers actionable insights for balancing economic growth with environmental and social sustainability in transitional economies. Full article

Seafood is a valuable commodity with increasing demand, traded for billions of USD each year. The volatility in supply chains and fluctuating prices contribute to the susceptibility of the seafood market to food fraud. Analytical methods are required to identify seafood in processed foods to ensure food authenticity and compliance with European laws. To address this need, we developed and validated a DNA metabarcoding method for the authentication of crustaceans and cephalopods in processed food samples, as both are prone to food fraud, especially in mixed products. A ~200 bp barcode of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA was selected as the marker for identification and sequenced on Illumina platforms. The DNA metabarcoding method utilizes two primer systems, one for the amplification of crustacean DNA and another for cephalopods. The crustacean primer system comprises two forward and two reverse primers, while the cephalopod primer system includes three forward and one reverse primer. DNA extracts from reference materials, model foods, processed foodstuffs, and DNA extract mixtures were investigated. Even species with a close phylogenetic relationship were successfully identified and differentiated in commercial samples, while single species were detected at amounts as low as 0.003% in model foods. However, false-negative results were obtained for certain species in DNA extract mixtures, which are most likely due to degraded or low-quality DNA and can best be prevented by optimized DNA extraction procedures. Our DNA metabarcoding method demonstrates strong potential as a qualitative screening tool in combination with other in-house DNA metabarcoding methods for food authentication in routine analysis. Brexit, the exiting of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU), has impacted socio-political relationships, both internally, and externally with other countries and economic groups. This has been especially true regarding international trade, and legal and market standards for food and food security. This paper examines how the enacting of Brexit has framed and underlined contemporary perceptions of the UK neoliberal food system, the relative importance of food standards, and the impact of policy transition on food security. Using a positional approach, perspectives and narratives within the literature are critiqued and synthesized, including academic sources, parliamentary debates, economic reports, and media analysis. The politico-economic effects of Brexit have altered food-related relationships, recalibrating trade interactions and changing the public funding that UK farmers receive. Through realigning extractive economic models, the pre-Brexit UK food system has been reset, and new perspectives about neoliberalism have emerged. Government intervention has steered away from traditional neoliberal framings towards neo-developmentalism. A dichotomy thus exists between recognizing the intrinsic right to adequate and nutritious food and maintaining existing cultural dynamics of food supply, and the use of agri-food policy as a politico-economic tool to drive higher economic growth. The implications of this policy change are stark for UK agri-food actors within food system transition post-Brexit. Full article
