An indicator-based approach was implemented to assess the contributions of soils in supplying ecosystem services, providing a scalable tool for modeling the spatial heterogeneity of soil functions at regional and local scales. The method consisted of (i) the definition of soil-based ecosystem services (SESs), using available point data and thematic maps; (ii) the definition of appropriate SES indicators; (iii) the assessment and mapping of potential SESs provision for the Emilia-Romagna region (22.510 km2) in NE Italy. Depending on data availability and on the role played by terrain features and soil geography and its complexity, maps of basic soil characteristics (textural fractions, organic C content, and pH) covering the entire regional territory were produced at a 1 ha resolution using digital soil mapping techniques and geostatistical simulations to explicitly consider spatial variability. Soil physical properties such as bulk density, porosity, and hydraulic conductivity at saturation were derived using pedotransfer functions calibrated using local data and integrated with supplementary information such as land capability and remote sensing indices to derive the inputs for SES assessment. Eight SESs were mapped at 1:50,000 reference scale: buffering capacity, carbon sequestration, erosion control, food provision, biomass provision, water regulation, water storage, and habitat for soil biodiversity. The results are discussed and compared for the different pedolandscapes, identifying clear spatial patterns of soil functions and potential SES supply. Full article

UAV platforms equipped with RTK positioning and LiDAR sensors are increasingly used for landslide monitoring, offering frequent, high-resolution surveys with broad spatial coverage. In this study, we applied high-frequency UAV-based monitoring to the active Baldiola earthflow (Northern Apennines, Italy), integrating 10 UAV–LiDAR and photogrammetric surveys, acquired at average intervals of 14 days over a four-month period. UAV-derived orthophotos and DEMs supported displacement analysis through homologous point tracking (HPT), with robotic total station measurements serving as ground-truth data for validation. DEMs were also used for multi-temporal DEM of Difference (DoD) analysis to assess elevation changes and identify depletion and accumulation patterns. Displacement trends derived from HPT showed strong agreement with RTS data in both horizontal (R2 = 0.98) and vertical (R2 = 0.94) components, with cumulative displacements ranging from 2 m to over 40 m between April and August 2024. DoD analysis further supported the interpretation of slope processes, revealing sector-specific reactivations and material redistribution. UAV-based monitoring provided accurate displacement measurements, operational flexibility, and spatially complete datasets, supporting its use as a reliable and scalable tool for landslide analysis. The results support its potential as a stand-alone solution for both monitoring and emergency response applications. Full article

Alternative proteins denote non-traditional, high-protein foods. These innovative sources aim to compete with conventional animal products by providing protein-rich, sustainable, nutritious, and flavorful options. Currently, five main categories of alternative proteins are being developed: plant-based proteins, cultured meat, single-cell proteins, edible insects, and seaweed. Nonetheless, several chemical and microbiological food safety hazards are associated with these alternatives Incorporating novel protein sources into food products may heighten the prevalence of existing food allergies. This could arise from extracting proteins from their natural matrices and utilizing them at significantly higher concentrations. Additionally, the introduction of new proteins may lead to the development of novel food allergies. Proteins that are currently seldom or never consumed may cause primary sensitisation or trigger cross-reactivity with known allergens. To date, alternative proteins have not been thoroughly studied for their allergenic potential, and there is no standardised method for assessing this risk. This review aims to explore non-traditional protein sources, discussing their nutritional and functional properties, as well as their potential allergenicity based on available research. We conducted a literature search in PubMed and Embase databases. We used specific keywords and MESH terms. A total of 157 studies were included in the review. The studies reviewed in our analysis reveal significant limitations, such as inconsistent methodologies, limited participant numbers, and a lack of long-term data, which hinder the ability to make clear conclusions regarding the safety of these new proteins for individuals with allergies. To address current challenge, future research should integrate food science, regulatory perspectives and advanced technologies. Full article

Background/Objectives: Pediatric acquired demyelinating syndromes (ADSs) encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders, including multiple sclerosis (MS), MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), with distinct clinical trajectories and prognoses. While analyzed collectively at baseline to reflect real-world diagnostic uncertainty, outcome predictors were also examined according to final diagnosis. Identifying early predictors is crucial for optimizing long-term outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 30 pediatric patients (mean onset age: 11.3 years) with ADSs. Clinical, radiological, CSF, antibody, and neurophysiological data were collected and analyzed alongside treatment strategies. Outcomes—EDSS scores, neuroradiological changes, and clinical status—were evaluated over a 3-year period. Results: Final diagnoses included MOGAD (36.6%), MS (33.3%), NMOSD (6.6%), ADEM (10%), and other ADSs (13.3%). At onset, ≥3 brain lesions were present in 76.7% of patients. Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) were used in 37% and acute immunotherapy in 90%. EDSS progression was significantly associated with DMT use at multiple timepoints, with additional predictors including MRI lesion type, CSF findings, antibody status, and evoked potentials. At 3 years, neurocognitive function predicted clinical outcome. Conclusions: Early immunotherapy and baseline instrumental findings are key predictors of outcome in pediatric ADSs. MOGAD showed a more favorable course, while MS and NMOSD were associated with greater long-term disability. A comprehensive, early diagnostic approach is essential for improving prognosis. River embankments are critical flood defense structures, stretching for thousands of kilometers across alluvial plains. They often originated as natural levees resulting from overbank flows and were later enlarged using locally available soils yet rarely designed according to modern engineering standards. Substantially under-characterized, their performance to extreme events provides an invaluable opportunity to highlight their vulnerability and then to improve monitoring, management, and reinforcement strategies. In May 2023, two extreme meteorological events hit the Emilia-Romagna region in rapid succession, causing numerous breaches along river embankments and therefore widespread flooding of cities and territories. These were followed by two additional intense events in September and October 2024, marking an unprecedented frequency of extreme precipitation episodes in the history of the region. This study presents the methodology adopted to create a regional database of 66 major breaches and damages that occurred during May 2023 extensive floods. The database integrates multi-source information, including field surveys; remote sensing data; and eyewitness documentation collected before, during, and after the events. Preliminary interpretation enabled the identification of the most likely failure mechanisms—primarily external erosion, internal erosion, and slope instability—often acting in combination. The database, unprecedented in Italy and with few parallels worldwide, also supported a statistical analysis of breach widths in relation to failure mechanisms, crucial for improving flood hazard models, which often rely on generalized assumptions about breach development. By offering insights into the real-scale behavior of a regional river defense system, the dataset provides an important tool to support river embankments risk assessment and future resilience strategies. Image analysis is a valuable approach in a wide array of environmental applications. Mapping land cover categories depicted from satellite images enables the monitoring of landscape dynamics. Such a technique plays a key role for land management and predictive ecosystem modelling. Satellite-based mapping of environmental dynamics enables us to define factors that trigger these processes and are crucial for our understanding of Earth system processes. In this study, a reclassification scheme of image analysis was developed for mapping the adjusted categorisation of land cover types using multispectral remote sensing datasets and Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The data included four Landsat 8–9 satellite images on 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023. The sequence of time series was used to determine land cover dynamics. The classification scheme consisting of 17 initial land cover classes was employed by logical workflow to extract 10 key land cover types of the coastal areas of Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, southern Red Sea. Special attention is placed to identify changes in the land categories regarding the thermal saline lake, Lake Assal, with fluctuating salinity and water levels. The methodology included the use of machine learning (ML) image analysis GRASS GIS modules ‘r.reclass’ for the reclassification of a raster map based on category values. Other modules included ‘r.random’, ‘r.learn.train’ and ‘r.learn.predict’ for gradient boosting ML classifier and ‘i.cluster’ and ‘i.maxlik’ for clustering and maximum-likelihood discriminant analysis. To reveal changes in the land cover categories around the Lake of Assal, this study uses ML and reclassification methods for image analysis. Auxiliary modules included ‘i.group’, ‘r.import’ and other GRASS GIS scripting techniques applied to Landsat image processing and for the identification of land cover variables. The results of image processing demonstrated annual fluctuations in the landscapes around the saline lake and changes in semi-arid and desert land cover types over Djibouti. The increase in the extent of semi-desert areas and the decrease in natural vegetation proved the processes of desertification of the arid environment in Djibouti caused by climate effects. The developed land cover maps provided information for assessing spatial–temporal changes in Djibouti. The proposed ML-based methodology using GRASS GIS can be employed for integrating techniques of image analysis for land management in other arid regions of Africa. Full article

Geo-historical information deduced from geo-iconographical resources, derived from extensive research and the selection of cartographies and historical documents, enabled the investigation of the natural and anthropic transformations of the perifluvial area of the Po River in the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy). This territory, significant in terms of its historical, cultural, and environmental contexts, for centuries has been the scene of flood events. These have characterised the morphological and dynamic variability in the riverbed and relative floodplain. The close relationship between man and river is well documented: the interference induced by anthropic activity has alternated with the sometimes-damaging effects of river dynamics. The attention given to the fluvial region of the Po River and its main tributaries, in a peculiar lowland sector near Parma, is critical for understanding spatial–temporal changes contributing to current geo-hydrological risks. A GIS project outlined the geomorphological aspects that define the considerable variations in the course of the Po River (involving width reductions of up to 66% and length changes of up to 14%) and its confluences from the 16th to the 21st century. Knowledge of anthropic modifications is essential as a tool within land-use planning and enhancing community awareness in risk-mitigation activities and strategic management. This study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary geo-historical studies that are complementary in order to decode river dynamics in damaging flood events and latent hazards in an altered river environment. Innovative applications of high-resolution airborne imaging are explored for detecting grapevine diseases. Driven by the motivation to enhance early disease detection, the method’s effectiveness lies in its capacity to identify isolated cases of grapevine yellows (Flavescence dorée and Bois Noir) and trunk disease (Esca complex), crucial for preventing the disease from spreading to unaffected areas. Conducted over a 17 ha vineyard in the Forlì municipality in Emilia-Romagna (Italy), the aerial survey utilized a photogrammetric camera capturing centimeter-level resolution images of the whole area in 17 minutes. These images were then processed through an automated analysis leveraging RGB-based spectral indices (Green–Red Vegetation Index—GRVI, Green–Blue Vegetation Index—GBVI, and Blue–Red Vegetation Index—BRVI). The analysis scanned the 1.24 · 109 pixels of the orthomosaic, detecting 0.4% of the vineyard area showing evidence of disease. The instances, density, and incidence maps provide insights into symptoms’ spatial distribution and facilitate precise interventions. High specificity (0.96) and good sensitivity (0.56) emerged from the ground field observation campaign. Statistical analysis revealed a significant edge effect in symptom distribution, with higher disease occurrence near vineyard borders. This pattern, confirmed by spatial autocorrelation and non-parametric tests, likely reflects increased vector activity and environmental stress at the vineyard margins. The presented pilot study not only provides a reliable detection tool for grapevine diseases but also lays the groundwork for an early warning system that, if extended to larger areas, could offer a valuable system to guide on-the-ground monitoring and facilitate strategic decision-making by the authorities. Background: Following the results of the Laparoscopic Approach to Carcinoma of the Cervix (LACC) trial, doubts have arisen about the safety of laparoscopy in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study which included all endometrial cancer (EC) patients who underwent a hysterectomy in Emilia Romagna hospitals from 2000 to 2019. All cases were revised and classified according to the 2009 International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system. The different impacts of the surgical approach on survival were stratified according to the recurrence risk from the 2016 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO)–European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) classification system. The clinical characteristics and oncological outcome of patients treated by laparoscopy were compared with those treated by laparotomy. Results: A total of 2402 EC patients were included in the study. The use of laparoscopy has increased over the years, reaching 81% of procedures in 2019. Laparoscopy reduced complications and hospital stay. Laparoscopy was preferred to treat low, intermediate, and intermediate/high-risk patients. Laparoscopy showed no adverse effects on overall survival (OS) in any recurrence risk class. Particularly in high-risk EC patients, laparoscopy was associated with an increased OS in comparison with women treated by laparotomy regardless of the use of adjuvant therapy. Conclusions: Laparoscopy should always be chosen to treat EC of any risk class. The goal is to ensure correct treatment and oncological safety regardless of the surgical approach. Full article

Sound source localization represents one of the major challenges for soundscapes due to the dynamicity of a large variety of signals. Many applications are found related to ecosystems to study the migration process of birds and animals other than other terrestrial environments to survey wildlife. Other applications on sound recording are supported by sensors to detect animal movement. This paper deals with the immersive 3D soundscape by using a multi-channel spherical microphone probe, in combination with a 360° camera. The soundscape has been carried out in three Italian squares across the city of Parma. The acoustic maps obtained from the data processing detect the directivity of dynamic sound sources as typical of an urban environment. The analysis of the objective environmental parameters (like loudness, roughness, sharpness, and prominence) was conducted alongside the investigations on the historical importance of Italian squares as places for social inclusivity. A dedicated listening playback is provided by the AGORA project with a portable listening room characterized by modular unit of soundbars. Full article

Most known chemical carcinogens induce the direct activation of DNA damage, either directly or following metabolic activation. However, carcinogens do not always operate directly through genotoxic mechanisms but can do so via non-genotoxic carcinogenic (NGTxC) mechanisms. Immune dysfunction is one of these key events that NGTxCs have been shown to modify. The immune system is a first line of defence against transformed cells, with an innate immune response against cancer cells and mechanisms of immune evasion. Here, we review the key events of immune dysfunction. These include immunotoxicity, immune evasion, immune suppression and inflammatory-mediated immune responses, and the key players in the molecular disruption of immune anti-cancer molecular signalling pathways, particularly those mediated by cytokines and the Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor, in relation to the identification of NGTxC. The plasticity of cytokines towards functional flexibility in response to environmental stressors is also discussed from an evolutionary heritage perspective. This is combined with a critical assessment of the suitability for the regulatory application of currently available test method tools and is corroborated by the key biomarkers of, e.g., MAPK, mTOR, PD-L1, TIL and Tregs, CD8+, FoxP3+, WNT, IL-17, IL-11, IL-10, and TNFα, as identified from robust cancer biopsy studies. Particle film technology is an environmentally sustainable crop protection method, offering an alternative to chemical pesticides for disease control. Copper-based compounds have long been central to the management of bacterial and fungal diseases, particularly in organic agriculture. However, due to their environmental persistence, their use has been increasingly restricted by European regulations, making the management of widespread diseases such as Olive Knot (Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi) and Downy Mildew (Plasmopara viticola) more difficult. The LIFE Microfighter project addresses this problem by testing a novel Zeo-Biopesticide (ZBp), in which natural zeolite serves as a carrier for the beneficial bacterium Pseudomonas synxantha DLS65. Field trials conducted in high-rainfall areas of Emilia-Romagna (Italy) evaluated the product’s distribution and persistence on olive and grape leaves through ESEM (Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations, its ability to retain the microorganism, and its effectiveness for disease control. Results showed that ZBp significantly reduced Olive Knot incidence compared to both the untreated control and Cu-based treatments (p < 0.05), supporting its potential as an alternative for bacterial disease management, while showing no statistically significant difference compared to the control in either the incidence or severity of Downy Mildew (p > 0.05). Its persistence and adherence to plant surfaces, which could influence its overall field performance, were affected by environmental conditions, particularly rainfall. Full article

Childhood Immunization Coverage Before, During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy

Background/Objectives: Maintaining high childhood vaccination coverage is essential to prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. In Italy, Law No. 119/2017 introduced mandatory childhood immunizations, leading to significant improvements. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine services, potentially jeopardizing these gains. This study aimed to evaluate national and regional trends in vaccine coverage across three phases: post-mandate (2015–2016 vs. 2017–2019), pandemic (2017–2019 vs. 2020–2021), and post-pandemic recovery (2020–2021 vs. 2022–2023). Methods: National and regional administrative data on vaccination coverage at 24 months of age were obtained from the Italian Ministry of Health. Temporal trends were analyzed using Joinpoint regression to estimate annual percent changes (APCs), and absolute changes in coverage (Δ) were calculated across defined periods. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to assess associations between baseline coverage and subsequent changes. Results: After the 2017 mandate, coverage increased significantly for varicella (APC = +28.6%), MenB (+22.6%), and measles (+3.4%). Regionally, varicella coverage rose by up to +58.4% in Emilia-Romagna and measles by +11.1% in Campania. During the pandemic, coverage declined for polio (−2.4% in the South) and measles (−6.2% in Abruzzo), while MenB increased in regions with lower initial uptake (r = −0.918, p < 0.001). Post-pandemic, coverage rebounded, with varicella improving by +20.1% in central regions and measles by +13.9% in Abruzzo. A strong inverse correlation between baseline coverage and improvement was observed for varicella across all periods (r from −0.877 to −0.915). Conclusions: Mandatory vaccination policies led to substantial coverage improvements, and despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, recovery trends were observed for most vaccines. The consistent association between low baseline coverage and stronger gains highlights the resilience of the system, but also the ongoing need for regionally tailored strategies to reduce geographic disparities and ensure equitable immunization across Italy. The ability to differentiate between different Apis mellifera subspecies can have significant implications for their conservation. In this study, we explored the possibility of obtaining multi-level information that could be useful in assigning a colony to the A. m. ligustica subspecies. This was accomplished by combining (1) standard morphometric characteristics of the honeybees with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data obtained from both the (2) honeybees and (3) honey present in a honeycomb sampled from the same colony. Eighty colonies were sampled in the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy). From these colonies, a total of 413 honeybees were analyzed to obtain sequence information of the tRNALeu-COII mtDNA region. When we combined the results obtained from all three methods, 63.75% of the colonies were found to be compatible with being assigned to A. m. ligustica. For 36.25% of the colonies, morphometric analysis indicated a hybrid origin and mtDNA from honeybees or honey samples indicated the presence of mtDNA haplotypes other than those characteristic for this subspecies. Cohen’s Kappa statistic indicated poor agreement in the classification of the colonies between morphometric analysis and the two DNA-based methods, which, in turn, were in substantial agreement with each other. Although not completely effective, mtDNA analysis of honey samples could serve as an initial and practical compromise to begin initiatives aimed at preserving the genetic integrity of A. m. ligustica in the Emilia-Romagna region, as well as in other regions where it is necessary to preserve the genetic integrity of autochthonous honeybee populations. In agreement with WHO recommendations, the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy, implemented a population-wide HCV screening program for the treatment of the large asymptomatic infected population. From January 2022, the free-of-charge screening targeted all residents born between 1969 and 1989, prison inmates, and injection drug users. Participants were recruited using phone messages, electronic health record notifications, public advertisement, and direct contact with general practitioners. A single blood sample was collected for anti-HCV IgG testing and, if positive, for reflex HCV–RNA testing. Infected subjects were offered an evidence-based therapeutic pathway. By June 2024, 72.8% of high-risk subjects (n = 19,732), and 36.9% of the general population (n = 488,065) had been screened. A total of 1032 individuals were positive based on the HCV–RNA test, and the detection rate widely differed between the high-risk and the general population (23.8‰ vs. 1.2‰, respectively). Of the infected individuals, 88.1% were seen by a specialist physician, and 74.3% (n = 767) started antiviral therapy. Thanks to multiple recruitment approaches, over one third of the general population participated in HCV screening. The program performance was substantially greater among high-risk individuals compared to the general population. To achieve WHO targets, policymakers might consider expanding the screening to other high-risk subgroups and/or adapting birth cohorts. Full article
