In this study, we investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with thermally modified attapulgite on the daily weight gain, serum biochemical indices, and serum metabolites of Simmental fattening cattle. A total of 30 healthy Simmental fattening beef calves of similar age (8 to 9 months old) and body weight (370 ± 10 kg) were randomly divided into two groups, each containing 15 animals. A control group was fed the basal diet, and a treatment group was fed the same basal diet with the addition of 4 g/kg of thermally modified attapulgite. After 75 days of formal experiment, the calves in the two groups were weighed, and blood samples were collected by tail vein blood sampling for determinations of the serum biochemical indices and serum metabolites using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. The results indicated that the addition of thermally modified attapulgite to the diet had no significant effects on the daily weight gain of fattening beef cattle. After feeding with modified attapulgite, the glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities in the serum of the experimental group were 55.02% (257.26 U·mL−1 to 165.95 U·mL−1, p < 0.05) and 13.11% (18.98 U·mL−1 to 16.78 U·mL−1, p < 0.05) higher than that in the control group. Compared with the control group, the tumor necrosis factor-alpha content was reduced by 14.50% (31.27 pg·mL−1 to 36.57 pg·mL−1, p < 0.01), and the concentration of interleukin-6 and lipopolysaccharide decreased by 17.00% (34.33 pg·mL−1 to 41.36 pg·mL−1, p < 0.001) and 23.05% (51.34 EU·L−1 to 66.72 EU·L−1, p < 0.001) in the serum of the experimental group. Contrastingly, the thermally modified attapulgite had no significant effects on the levels of serum total protein, albumin, or globulin in Simmental fattening cattle (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the results of serum metabolomic analyses revealed that there were a total of 98 differential metabolites, which were mainly enriched with respect to glycerophospholipid metabolism, Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation, autophagy-other, retrograde endogenous cannabinoid signaling, and the NF-κB signaling pathway. Overall, thermally modified attapulgite was found to effectively increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes, reduce serum inflammatory mediators, may suppress oxidative damage, enhance immunity, and have a positive influence on the health of Simmental fattening beef calves. This paper investigates the impact of the transition from manufacturing to tourism on sectoral productivity, output prices, and labor costs. Using panel data econometric models for 15 selected EU countries from 2011 to 2023, the study confirms key dynamics predicted by Baumol’s cost disease (BCD) hypothesis. The findings reveal that higher productivity is positively associated with both implied prices and hourly labor costs across sectors, supporting the wage equalization mechanism central to BCD. However, the relationship between productivity and wages or prices is weaker in labor-intensive sectors like tourism, underscoring their structural vulnerability to wage-driven cost pressures. Additionally, the analysis captures the impact of major external shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo–Ukrainian war, treated as jointly sourced super-shocks. The regression results indicate significant price disruptions following these shocks, whereas no statistically significant trend in labor costs was detected in the post-treatment period. These results highlight the differential effects of external shocks on wages versus prices, emphasizing the challenges faced by low-productivity, labor-intensive sectors in managing cost dynamics. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers addressing sectoral imbalances in the context of BCD and navigating the economic consequences of global disruptions. Full article

With the growing interest in natural and health-supporting foods, oak acorns (Quercus robur) are gaining renewed attention for their nutritional and antioxidant potential. This study explored how different processing methods affect bioactive compounds in three acorn-based products: raw acorn flour, roasted “coffee,” and washed-and-roasted “super coffee.” Extracts were obtained using methanol, acetone, and hexane to evaluate total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity via ABTS, DPPH, CUPRAC, FRAP, and TRP assays. Methanol proved to be the most effective solvent, extracting up to 66.53 mg GAE/g dw of phenolics in raw flour and 76.50 mg GAE/g dw in roasted “coffee,” reflecting a 15% increase in TPC after thermal treatment. However, the same treatment resulted in a 17% decrease in flavonoid content, from 181.5 mg RE/g dw in raw flour to 150.67 mg RE/g dw in “super coffee.” Antioxidant activity followed a similar pattern, with methanol extracts showing the highest values, up to 584 mg TE/g dw in the CUPRAC assay and 126.7 mg TE/g dw in ABTS. Safety was also assessed through the quantification of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAH levels in the roasted “coffee” and “super coffee” samples were 222 ng/g dw and 290 ng/g dw, respectively. Importantly, PAH4 compounds, used as key safety indicators in EU regulations, were present in low concentrations, primarily as benzo[a]anthracene (34.3–39.8 ng/g), and none exceeded the maximum limits established for cocoa-based products. Benzo[a]pyrene, a major carcinogen, was not detected. The results confirm that acorns of Quercus robur, especially in their native flour form, are rich in antioxidants, naturally gluten-free, and safe when thermally processed, making them a strong candidate for use in functional foods. An increasing number of soils, including those in EU countries, are affected by organic matter deficiency and the deterioration of nutrients, and using mineral fertilizers is often associated with negative environmental impacts. One of the basic recommendations for sustainable agriculture is to increase the proportion of organic fertilizers in crop production and preserve soil biodiversity. An increasingly common organic fertilizer is biogas plant digestate, the physical and chemical properties of which depend primarily on the waste material used in biogas production. However, the fertilizer value of this additive and its effects on the soil environment, including beneficial organisms, remain insufficiently studied. Soil macrofauna, particularly earthworms, play a crucial role in soil ecosystems, because they significantly impact the presence of plant nutrients, actively participate in forming soil structures, and strongly influence organic matter dynamics. The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of fertilizing a silt loam soil with the solid fraction of digestate in monoculture crop production on earthworm community characteristics and the resulting changes in selected soil physicochemical properties. The research was conducted at a single site, so the original soil characteristics across the experimental plots were identical. Plots were treated annually (for 3 years; 2021–2023) with different levels of digestate: DG100 (100% of the recommended rate; 30 t ha−1), DG75 (75% of the recommended rate; 22.5 t ha−1), DG50 (15 t ha−1), DG25 (7.5 t ha−1), and CL (a control plot without fertilizer). An electrical method was used to extract earthworms. Those found at the study site belonged to seven species representing three ecological groups: Dendrodrilus rubidus (Sav.), Lumbricus rubellus (Hoff.), and Dendrobaena octaedra (Sav.) (epigeics); Aporrectodea caliginosa (Sav.), Aporrectodea rosea (Sav.), and Octolasion lacteum (Örley) (endogeics); and Lumbricus terrestris (L.) (anecics). Significant differences in the abundance and biomass of earthworms were found between the higher level treatments (DG100, DG75, and DG50), and the lowest level of fertilization and the control plot (DG25 and CL). The DG25 and CL plots showed an average of 24.7% lower earthworm abundance and 22.8% lower biomass than the other plots. There were no significant differences in the earthworm metrics between the plots within each of the two groups (DG100, DG75, and DG50; and DG25 and CL). The most significant influence on the average abundance and average biomass of Lumbricidae was probably exerted by soil moisture and the annual dosage of digestate. A significant increase in the abundance and biomass of Lumbricidae was shown at plots DG100, DG75, and DG50 in the three successive years of the experiment. The different fertilizer treatments were found to have different effects on selected soil parameters. No significant differences were found among the values of the analyzed soil traits within each plot in the successive years of the study. Full article

Air pollution poses a growing threat to public health and the environment, highlighting the need for continuous and precise urban air quality monitoring. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate an autonomous air quality monitoring platform developed by the University of Ruse, “Angel Kanchev”, under Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (project BG-RRP-2.013-0001), co-financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU initiative. The system, based on Libelium’s mobile sensor technology, was installed at a height of two meters on the university campus near Rodina Boulevard and operated continuously from 1 March 2024 to 30 March 2025. Every 15 min, it recorded concentrations of CO, CO2, NO2, SO2, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, along with meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, and pressure), transmitting the data via GSM to a cloud-based database. Analyses included a distributional assessment, Spearman rank correlations, Kruskal–Wallis tests with Dunn–Sidak post hoc comparisons, and k-means clustering to identify temporal and meteorological patterns in pollutant levels. The results indicate the high operational stability of the system and reveal characteristic pollution profiles associated with time of day, weather conditions, and seasonal variation. The findings confirm the value of combining calibrated IoT systems with advanced statistical methods to support data-driven air quality management and the development of predictive environmental models. Background: Local audits of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) prescriptions and outcomes are necessary to assess guideline awareness among clinicians and treatment effectiveness. Aims: The aims were to investigate first-line prescriptions and effectiveness over a 10-year period in Ireland and evaluate the influence of the 2017 Irish consensus guidelines on these trends. Methods: Data were collected at e-CRF AEG-REDCap from the European Registry on H. pylori management (Hp-EuReg) and quality reviewed from 2013 to 2022. All treatment-naïve cases were assessed for effectiveness by modified intention-to-treat (mITT) analysis. Multivariate analysis was also performed. Results: Data from 1000 patients (mean age 50 ± 15 years; 54% female) were analyzed. Clarithromycin (C) and amoxicillin (A) triple therapy represented 88% of treatments, followed by sequential C, A, and metronidazole (M) therapy (4.3%) and triple C + M (2.7%). Bismuth quadruple therapy was prescribed in 1.7% of cases. Treatment durations of 14, 10, and 7 days accounted for 87%, 4.5%, and 8.5% of prescriptions, respectively. High-, standard-, and low-dose proton pump inhibitors (PPIs; 80 mg, 40 mg, and 20 mg omeprazole equivalent b.i.d.) were used in 86%, 0.9%, and 13% of cases, respectively. The overall eradication rate was 80%, while it was 81% for triple C + A. Good compliance and high-dose PPI were associated with higher overall mITT eradication rates (OR 4.5 and OR 1.9, respectively) and triple C + A eradication rates (OR 4.2 and OR 1.9, respectively). Overall eradication rates increased from 74% pre-2017 to 82% (p < 0.05) by the end of 2022. Similarly, the triple C + A eradication rates increased from 76% to 83% (p < 0.05). Conclusions: While first-line treatment effectiveness improved in clinical practice over time, cure rates remain below 90%. Alternative first-line strategies are required in Ireland. Full article

The Eastern Carpathians are thrust to the east and north over their Eastern European foreland, tectonically covering it over an area several hundred kilometers across. Information about the nature of the underthrust part of the Carpathian foreland can be obtained from the rock fragments preserved in the sedimentary successions of the Carpathian fold and thrust belt, specifically in the Outer Dacides and the Moldavides. Fragments of felsic rocks occurring within the sedimentary units of the Upper Cretaceous successions of the Moldavides have long been attributed to the Cuman Cordillera—an intrabasinal ridge in the Eastern Outer Carpathians. This work is the first complex geochemical and geochronological study on the exotic igneous clasts of the Cuman Cordillera. Igneous clasts from the southern part of the Moldavides (Variegated clay nappe/formation) are investigated here. They include mainly granites and rhyolites. Phaneritic rocks are composed of cumulus plagioclase, albite, amphibole and biotite, and intercumulus quartz and potassium feldspar, with apatite, magnetite, sphene, and zircon as main accessories, while the porphyritic rocks have a mineral assemblage similar to that mentioned above, displayed in a porphyritic texture with a usually crystallized groundmass. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating indicated the 583–597 Ma age interval for magma crystallization. Based on calcareous nannofossils, the depositional age of the investigated igneous clasts is Cenomanian to Maastrichtian, implying that the Cuman Cordillera was an emerged piece of land, herein an active source of sediments in the flysch basin for at least 40 Ma, from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian) to the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian). The intrusive and subvolcanic rocks show similar trends for trace and major elements, evincing their comagmatic nature. The enrichment in LILE and LREE relative to HFSE and HREE, as well as the element anomalies (e.g., negative Nb, Ta, and Eu and positive Rb, Ba, K, and Pb) suggest a convergent continental plate margin tectonic setting. Mineral chemistry suggests magma crystallization in relatively oxic conditions (magnetite series), during ascent within a depth of 15 km to 5 km. The igneous rocks attributed to the Cuman ridge display compositional and geochronological features similar to Brno and Thaya batholiths in the Brunovistulian terrane, which could be a piece of the Carpathian foreland not covered by the Tertiary thrusts. Our data confirm the non-Carpathian origin of the igneous clasts, revealing a Neoproterozoic history of the Carpathian foreland units, which include a Cadomian/Pan-African continental arc, exposed mainly during the Late Cretaceous as an intrabasinal island of the Alpine Tethys, traditionally known as the Cuman Cordillera. Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the diagnostic efficiency between combined endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)/endoesophageal ultrasound (EUS) and transcervical extended mediastinal lymphadenectomy (TEMLA) for preoperative staging of mediastinal lymph nodes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Material and Methods: Between June 2011 and December 2017, a single-institution prospective randomized trial was conducted, and 250 patients with cytologically confirmed NSCLC, clinical stages cI–IIIA, were included. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) was performed in all patients. After exclusions, 204 patients were randomized into the EBUS/EUS or TEMLA arms. Patients without N2/N3 metastases after mediastinal staging underwent surgery. The diagnostic yield and complication rates of the EBUS/EUS and TEMLA groups were compared. Results: There were 103 patients in the EBUS/EUS group, and N2 metastases were found in nine cases (8.7%). Ninety-four patients underwent surgery; in six cases, previously unsuspected N2 metastases were revealed. One hundred and one patients were randomized to the TEMLA group, which detected N2/N3 metastases in 15 cases (15.1%). Three patients were not operated on due to postoperative complications following TEMLA. Eighty-three patients underwent surgery, and a single N2 metastatic nodule was detected in one case. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV were 94%, 100%, 99%, 100%, and 99% for TEMLA, respectively, and 60%, 100%, 94%, 100%, and 94% for EBUS/EUS, respectively. There was a significant difference in sensitivity (60% vs. 94%) between the EBUS/EUS and TEMLA groups in favor of the TEMLA group. Postoperative complications occurred in 6/101 (6%) patients after TEMLA, while no complications were observed in the EBUS/EUS group. Conclusions: TEMLA demonstrated superior sensitivity for detecting N2/3 disease compared to EBUS/EUS in terms of diagnostic performance for mediastinal staging of cI–IIIA NSCLC. Due to its more invasive nature, TEMLA was associated with a higher number of complications compared with EBUS/EUS. Full article

Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is valued for its fibers and nutrient-rich seeds, which are increasingly consumed for their health benefits. However, flaxseeds can also accumulate potentially toxic elements (PTEs), raising concerns about safety. This study quantified 11 essential elements (e.g., Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn) and 9 PTEs (e.g., Al, Cd, Pb, and Ni) in commercial flaxseed samples using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry. Two intake scenarios (15 g/day and 30 g/day) were analyzed to estimate dietary exposure, with health risks assessed through the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). The results showed that organic flaxseeds had higher levels of certain elements (e.g., Cu, K, and Pb), while Al and Ni were more abundant in conventional samples. Cadmium levels in both remained below the EU regulatory limit. The highest estimated daily intakes were for K, Mg, and Ca, highlighting the seeds’ nutritional value. However, HI values suggested that Al and Pb could pose health risks. These findings emphasize flaxseeds’ dual nature as both beneficial and potentially harmful, particularly given the lack of specific regulatory limits and limited data on elemental composition. Continued monitoring and risk assessment are recommended to safeguard public health. Full article

Objective: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) has emerged as a promising alternative for biliary decompression in patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO), used either as a first-line approach or after other interventions have failed. This study aimed to evaluate the aggregated efficacy and safety of EUS-GBD in this patient population. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was carried out across PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to 9 January 2024, to identify studies reporting outcomes of EUS-GBD in MDBO cases. The primary endpoint assessed was clinical success, while secondary endpoints included technical success and the incidence of adverse events (AEs). Pooled outcomes were calculated using a random-effects model and presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Seven studies encompassing a total of 193 patients were included in the analysis. The combined clinical success rate for EUS-GBD was 88.1% [95% CI: 78.9–94.9%], while the technical success rate was 99.2% [95% CI: 97.5–100%]. The overall AE rate was 13.7% [95% CI: 9.3–18.8%], with the majority being mild to moderate in severity; no fatal complications were reported. Subgroup analyses indicated that use of smaller lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) (<15 mm) was associated with slightly higher clinical success (93.3% [95% CI: 72.4–99.9%]) compared to larger stents (≥15 mm) (87.1% [95% CI: 78.8–93.5%]), and a marginally lower rate of AEs (12.3% [95% CI: 6.4–19.7%] vs. 15.2% [95% CI: 6.5–26.6%]). Conclusions: EUS-GBD demonstrates excellent technical performance, high clinical efficacy, and a manageable safety profile in patients with MDBO and a patent cystic duct. Full article

A previous cross-sectional study found impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in hyperthyroid cats, but the longitudinal impact of treatment—especially differences between radioiodine (RAIT) and antithyroid drug (ATD) approaches—remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate changes in HRQoL in recently diagnosed (<6 months) hyperthyroid cats that underwent RAIT or received ATD. HRQoL was assessed using the validated HyperthyroidismQoL-cat questionnaire at baseline and after 1, 3, and 6 months, alongside thyroid status (eu-/hypo-/hyperthyroid) evaluation. Mixed-effects model analysed the influence of treatment type, timepoint, and thyroid status on log(HRQoL). HRQoL differences between groups at baseline and comparison to a non-hyperthyroid control group (n = 322) from a previous study at month 6 were examined using Mann–Whitney U tests. Data are presented as median (range), with significance set at p < 0.05. Thirty-eight client-owned hyperthyroid cats (15 ATD, 23 RAIT) were included. HRQoL scores at baseline did not differ between groups (RAIT: 103.5 [27–211], ATD: 73 [22–260], p = 0.22). HRQoL significantly improved over time (p < 0.001) but was not affected by treatment type (p = 0.20) or thyroid status (p = 0.40). Despite improvement, HRQoL remained lower than in non-hyperthyroid controls (hyperthyroid: 42.5 [3–161.5], non-hyperthyroid: 27 [0–249], p = 0.007). This study highlights the overall positive impact of treatment on HRQoL, but due to the lack of randomisation and heterogeneity of subjects and treatment, conclusion have to be considered preliminary. Retention forestry creates anthropogenic ecotones that diversify forest landscapes in terms of age and biomass. Such diversification can have ambiguous ecological impacts, raising uncertainties, particularly for black alder swamp woodlands, which are considered sensitive and are prioritized in EU conservation policy. This study aimed to examine the effects of adjacent clear-cutting on ground cover vegetation in 12 black alder stands in the hemiboreal zone in Latvia 11 to 120 years since the harvest. Ground cover vegetation was recorded by species along 40 m transects. The effects of the time since adjacent stand harvesting and exposure to the edge on species richness and Shannon diversity were assessed using linear mixed-effects models. A detrended correspondence analysis was used to explore the main environmental gradients. A total of 103 species were recorded: 15 in the tree and shrub layer, 66 in the herbaceous layer, and 22 in the moss and lichen layer. The exposure to the adjacent stand had a moderate positive effect on species diversity, while the effects of edge age were complex and varied by stand type. The scale of disturbance (the absolute length of the analyzed edge), rather than edge age or exposure, had the most pronounced effect on ground cover vegetation composition, suggesting persistent secondary edge effects that should be considered in forest management and conservation planning. Adopting building information modeling (BIM) within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry presents an opportunity to tackle persistent challenges, such as chronic productivity deficits and emerging imperatives like sustainability. However, BIM implementation (BIMI) across European Union (EU) countries diverges due to different contexts and the complexity of BIM. This study aims to identify the main barriers to BIMI and recommend effective mitigation measures in Portugal, a late-adopting EU country. Initially, 28 BIMI barriers were identified through a literature review. Experts in a Delphi survey then selected 15 critical barriers. An interpretive structural modeling (ISM) model was developed with input from a focus group to clarify the hierarchical relationships among barriers, and an impact matrix cross-reference multiplication applied to a classification (MICMAC) analysis was performed to evaluate the barriers’ driving and dependence powers. The resulting main barriers to BIMI include a lack of evaluation mechanisms, ignorance of BIM benefits, a shortage of skilled professionals, limited experience and cooperation, resistance to change, and inadequate top management support. Finally, experts in a second focus group developed mitigation measures to address the main barriers while ensuring the measures affect the entire barrier system. These findings will assist researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in late-adopter EU countries in addressing these barriers effectively. Full article

Processing methods affect the quality and, most importantly, safety of meat. The effects of various marinades, a kind of green processing technology commonly used in Poland, on PAH contamination in pork neck loins, the most frequently grilled pork meat, were investigated, including universal, pork, and honey mustard, as well as the most popular grilling tools. It is important to note that no such data have been published so far. Our previous study focused on poultry meat, another commonly grilled meat. PAH analysis was conducted using the QuEChERS–HPLC–FLD/DAD method and confirmed by the GC/MS method. Weight loss and changes in individual color parameters after grilling were also analyzed. Grilling on a charcoal grill without an aluminum tray caused statistically the greatest PAH contents. Some of these samples, according to Commission Regulation (EU) No. 915/2023 restrictions, should not be consumed by humans due to the high content of B[a]P (5.26–6.51 µg/kg). The lowest contamination levels overall were determined for the ceramic contact grill. Studies have also shown that the universal and pork marinades can reduce PAH contamination by about 24–29% for 4 heavy PAHs and by 31–32% for 15 PAHs, whereas the honey mustard marinade increases their accumulation in grilled products by 13% for 4 PAHs and 12% for 15 PAHs. Carefully choosing the grilling equipment, such as using electric grills instead of charcoal or using aluminum trays when grilling with charcoal and marinating the meat before grilling, is essential for food producers and consumers. These practices can significantly reduce the harmful health effects of PAHs, making them vital steps toward safer food preparation. Full article

In this study, nanoparticles with a monoclinic crystal structure of Gd0.85−yLayPO4:15%Eu were synthesized through a hydrothermal method. Initial investigations focused on the influence of the precursor on the resulting structure of LaPO4:1%Eu, with variations in synthesis temperature. Various syntheses were conducted using ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4) and diammonium hydrogen phosphate ((NH4)2HPO4) as PO43− ion precursors, and the synthesis temperature ranged from room temperature to 200 °C. Based on the synthesis and analysis outcomes, diammonium hydrogen phosphate was selected as the precursor for PO43− ions. Subsequent hydrothermal synthesis was performed at 180 °C to produce nanoparticles with a monoclinic crystal structure. After evaluating the synthesis and analysis results, the decision was made to increase the Eu3+ content from 1% to 15% by replacing La or Gd when a single-phase La0.75Gd0.24PO4:1%Eu with a monoclinic crystal structure was achieved. These structural modifications were carried out in order to stabilize the anhydrous monoclinic structure and improve the luminescence properties of the phosphate. The synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Luminescence properties were meticulously measured and discussed. The emission intensity of monoclinic structure La0.75Gd0.1PO4:15%Eu was found to be almost twice as high as compared with La0.61Gd0.24PO4:15%Eu. Additionally, magnetization dependence on the applied magnetic field strength was measured, revealing paramagnetic properties in the investigated samples. Full article
