Gestation-Stage Related Changes in the IGF System Components in the Equine Placenta

The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system regulates implantation, placental development, and angiogenesis in eutherian mammals. However, little is known about the changes in this system in equine placenta (chorioallantois; CA) and the endometrium (EN) during pregnancy, or the relationship to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. The current study investigated the expression of the IGF system components, namely the ligands (IGF1 and IGF2), their receptors (IGF1R, IGF2R, and INSR), and their binding proteins (IGFBPs and IGF2BPs) in equine CA at 45 days, 4, 6, 10, and 11 months of gestational age (GA) and immediately postpartum (PP), and in equine EN at 4, 6, 10, and 11 months GA. IGF1 immunolocalization and serum concentrations were also evaluated across gestation. IGF1 mRNA expression in CA increased from day 45 to peak at 6 months and then gradually declined to reach a nadir in PP samples. This profile correlated positively with the VEGF expression profile (r = 0.62, p = 0.001). In contrast, IGF2 expression in CA was not correlated with VEGF (p = 0.14). Interestingly, IGF2 mRNA was more abundant in equine CA than IGF1 (p < 0.05) throughout gestation. Among the IGFBPs investigated in CA, the expression of IGFBP2 and IGF2BP2 was highly abundant (p < 0.05) at day 45 compared to other GAs. Conversely, mRNA expression for IGFBP3 and IGFBP5 was more abundant (p < 0.05) in PP than at all investigated GAs. Immunohistochemistry revealed that IGF1 is localized in the equine chorionic epithelium (cytoplasm and nucleus). IGF1 serum concentrations peaked at 9 months and declined to their lowest levels PP. In conclusion, this study demonstrates a positive correlation between IGF1 and VEGF expression in equine CA during gestation, suggesting that the IGF system plays a crucial role in placental angiogenesis by regulating VEGF. Hyperspectral remote sensing plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting various mineral prospecting activities. Combined with artificial intelligence, hyperspectral remote sensing technology becomes a powerful and versatile tool for a wide range of mineral exploration activities. This study investigates the effectiveness of ensemble learning (EL) algorithms for lithological classification and mineral exploration using EnMAP hyperspectral imagery (HSI) in a semi-arid region. The Moroccan Anti-Atlas mountainous region is known for its complex geology, high mineral potential and rugged terrain, making it a challenging for mineral exploration. This research applies core and heterogeneous ensemble learning methods, i.e., boosting, stacking, voting, bagging, blending, and weighting to improve the accuracy and robustness of lithological classification and mapping in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas mountainous region. Several state-of-the-art models, including support vector machines (SVMs), random forests (RFs), k-nearest neighbors (k-NNs), multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), extra trees (ETs) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were evaluated and used as individual and ensemble classifiers. The results show that the EL methods clearly outperform (single) base classifiers. The potential of EL methods to improve the accuracy of HSI-based classification is emphasized by an optimal blending model that achieves the highest overall accuracy (96.69%). The heterogeneous EL models exhibit better generalization ability than the baseline (single) ML models in lithological classification. The current study contributes to a more reliable assessment of resources in mountainous and semi-arid regions by providing accurate delineation of lithological units for mineral exploration objectives. The coastal sandy land in northeast Hainan Province is typical for this land type, also exhibiting strong sand activity. This study is based on wind speed, wind direction, and sediment transport data obtained at a field meteorological station using an omnidirectional sand accumulation instrument from 2020 to 2024, studying the coastal aeolian environment and sediment transport distribution characteristics in the region. Its findings provide a theoretical basis for comprehensively analyzing the evolution of coastal aeolian landforms and the evaluation and control of coastal aeolian hazards. The research results show the following: (1) The annual average threshold wind velocity for sand movement in the study area is 6.84 m/s, and the wind speed frequency (frequency of occurrence) is 51.54%, dominated by easterly (NE, ENE) and southerly (S, SSE) winds. (2) The drift potential (DP) refers to the potential amount of sediment transported within a certain time and spatial range, and the annual drift potential (DP) and resultant drift potential (RDP) of Mulan Bay from 2020 to 2024 were 550.82 VU and 326.88 VU, respectively, indicating a high-energy wind environment. The yearly directional wind variability index (RDP/DP) was 0.59, classified as a medium ratio and indicating blunt bimodal wind conditions. The yearly resultant drift direction (RDD) was 249.45°, corresponding to a WSW direction, indicating that the sand in Mulan Bay is generally transported in the southwest direction. (3) When the measured data extracted from the sand accumulation instrument in the study area from 2020 to 2024 were used for statistical analysis, the results showed that the total sediment transport rate (the annual sediment transport of the observation section) in the study area was 110.87 kg/m·a, with the maximum sediment transport rate in the NE direction being 29.26 kg/m·a. These results suggest that when sand fixation systems are constructed for relevant infrastructure in the region, the construction direction of protective forests and other engineering measures should be perpendicular to the net direction of sand transport. This study presents a comprehensive inventory of bryophytes in Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO), aiming to evaluate species richness, floristic composition and threatened taxa. Despite the state of Rio de Janeiro being one of the most extensively sampled regions for bryophytes in Brazil, detailed surveys of its conservation units remain scarce. Data were obtained through bibliographic review, herbarium specimen analysis, and new field collections. A total of 504 species were recorded, belonging to 202 genera and 76 families. The park harbors three locally endemic species, eight endemic to Rio de Janeiro, and sixty-nine species endemic to Brazil. Additionally, eleven species were identified as threatened, comprising seven Endangered (EN), two Critically Endangered (CR), and two Vulnerable (VU) according to the IUCN guidelines. PARNASO includes four distinct ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient: sub-montane forest (up to 500 m), montane forest (500–1500 m), upper-montane forest (1500–2000 m), and high-altitude fields (above 2000 m). Montane Forest showed the highest species richness, followed by high-altitude fields, upper-montane forest, and sub-montane forest. The findings highlight PARNASO’s importance in preserving bryophyte diversity in a highly diverse yet understudied region. This work contributes valuable baseline data to support conservation strategies and future ecological studies in Atlantic Forest remnants. Full article

Biopolymers and bio-based plastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS), are recognized as environmentally friendly materials and are widely used, especially in the packaging industry. The purpose of this study was to assess the degradation of PLA- and PBS-based formulations in the forms of granules and films under controlled composting conditions at a laboratory scale. Biodegradation tests of bio-based materials were conducted under controlled aerobic conditions, following the standard EVS-EN ISO 14855-1:2012. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed using a high-resolution Zeiss Ultra 55 scanning electron microscope to analyze the samples. After the six-month laboratory-scale composting experiment, it was observed that the PLA-based materials degraded by 47.46–98.34%, while the PBS-based materials exhibited a final degradation degree of 34.15–80.36%. Additionally, the PLA-based compounds displayed a variable total organic carbon (TOC) content ranging from 38% to 56%. In contrast, the PBS-based compounds exhibited a more consistent TOC content, with a narrow range from 53% to 54%. These findings demonstrate that bioplastics can contribute to reducing plastic waste through controlled composting, but their degradation efficiency depends on the material composition and environmental conditions. Future efforts should optimize bioplastic formulations and composting systems while developing supportive policies for wider adoption. Full article

Affecting over 50% of stroke patients, dysphagia is still challenging to diagnose and manage due to its complex multifactorial nature and can be the result of disruptions in the coordination of cortical and subcortical neural activity as reflected in electroencephalographic (EEG) signal patterns. Sample Entropy (SampEn), a signal complexity or predictability measure, could serve as a tool to identify any abnormalities associated with dysphagia. The present study aimed to identify quantitative dysphagia biomarkers using SampEn from EEG recordings in post-stroke patients. Sample entropy was calculated in the theta, alpha, and beta bands of EEG recordings in a repetitive swallowing task performed by three groups: 22 stroke patients without dysphagia (controls), 36 stroke patients with dysphagia, and 21 healthy age-matched individuals. Post-stroke patients, both with and without dysphagia, exhibited significant differences in SampEn compared to healthy subjects in the alpha and theta bands, suggesting widespread alterations in brain dynamics. These changes likely reflect impairments in sensorimotor integration and cognitive control mechanisms essential for effective swallowing. A significant cluster was identified in the left parietal region during swallowing in the beta band, where dysphagic patients showed higher entropy compared to healthy individuals and controls. This finding suggests altered neural dynamics in a region crucial for sensorimotor integration, potentially reflecting disrupted cortical coordination associated with dysphagia. The precise quantification of these neurophysiological alterations offers a robust and objective biomarker for diagnosing neurogenic dysphagia and monitoring therapeutic interventions by means of EEG, a non-invasive and cost-efficient technique. Background/Objectives: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) seems to be a common complaint which persists or develops after metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). Endoscopic evaluation is vital in both the preoperative and postoperative phases to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of GERD after MBS in a 10-year follow-up and analyze the endoscopic outcomes. Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study included 368 patients who underwent single bariatric procedure. The data came from five bariatric centers in Poland, part of the BARI-10-POL project. Data on symptoms of GERD, endoscopic findings, demographics, and surgical outcomes were collected for a 10-year follow-up period. Surgical procedures included SG, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). Results: Of the 305 patients without symptoms of GERD, 12.3% developed de novo GERD postoperatively. There was no statistical significance regarding the new-onset symptoms and the type of MBS (p = 0.074) and the presence of symptoms of GERD and the type of MBS (p = 0.208). However, SG was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of GERD remission after MBS (p = 0.005). Endoscopic evaluation showed abnormal findings in asymptomatic patients in both preoperative (35.8%) and postoperative (14.1%) examinations (p < 0.001). Conclusions: GERD may be a common issue after MBS. One-quarter of patients after MBS may experience symptoms of GERD, regardless of the type of MBS. SG appears to be associated with a higher risk of persistent symptoms of GERD and a lower likelihood of GERD remission after MBS. Asymptomatic patients both before and after MBS may have abnormal findings in gastroscopy. Full article

This article presents studies on the degradation susceptibility of two commercially available gear oils used in electric passenger vehicle transmissions. A series of aging tests were conducted using selected research methods. Due to the lack of a recommended methodology for testing the thermal oxidation stability of such oils, standardized methods were applied: ASTM D5704, ASTM D8206, ASTM D2272, PN-EN 16091, and PN-C-04080. To determine the degree of degradation, changes in physicochemical parameters (kinematic viscosity at 40 °C and 100 °C and acid number) and changes in the chemical character of oil components, based on FTIR spectra, were evaluated. Significant changes in properties were found in the tested oils, which were confirmed by spectral analysis. It was found that all the mentioned methods for assessing thermal oxidation stability are suitable for evaluating such oils, but they differ in the aggressiveness of the method towards the tested oil. These methods can be ranked according to their impact on the degradation of the tested oil. Full article

Cryotherapy could stimulate immune responses and induce abscopal effects. A novel technique was developed for treating spinal bone tumors involving the use of frozen tumor-containing autologous bone grafts for anterior spinal reconstruction following total en-bloc spondylectomy, with the aim of activating cryoimmunity. This study focused on analyzing changes in the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire after surgery to evaluate T-cell diversity. Blood samples were collected pre- and post-operatively, with subsequent RNA extraction and immunosequencing. Compared to pre-surgery samples, the diversity and abundance of the Complementarity-Determining Region 3, regions of the TCR α and β chains decreased, suggesting that more selective clones may have emerged and influenced immune responses. Through TCR repertoire analysis, this study demonstrated that transplantation of frozen tumor-containing autologous bone impacted the immune system. This study is expected to provide a foundation for developing treatments that may enhance immune activation. Full article

This study details how 3-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (3NPEO) behaves in terms of photophysics when exposed to different solvents. The solvatochromic effect study reveals significant polarity shifts in the excited states of the 3NPEO compound, likely due to an intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. Measurements of dipole moments provide insight into their resonance structures in both ground and excited states. Electrochemical analysis revealed a reversible redox process, indicating a favorable charge transport potential. HOMO and LUMO energies of the compound were computed via oxidation and reduction potential standards. 3NPEO exhibits optimal one-photon and two-photon absorption characteristics, validating its suitability for visible wavelength laser applications in photonic devices. Furthermore, molecular docking and dynamics simulations demonstrated strong interactions between 3NPEO and the progesterone receptor enzyme, supported by structure–activity relationship (SAR) analyses. In vitro cytotoxicity assays on the MDAMB-231 breast cancer cell line showed moderate tumor cell inhibitory activity. Apoptosis studies confirmed the induction of both early and late apoptosis. These findings suggest that 3NPEO holds promise as a potential anticancer agent targeting the progesterone receptor in breast cancer cells. Overall, the findings highlight the substantial influence of solvent polarity on the photophysical properties and the design of more effective and stable therapeutic agents. Full article

The transition to sustainable energy systems demands efficient recycling methods for critical raw materials like lithium. In this study, we present a new class of pH- and light-switchable flotation collectors based on isomeric derivatives of the natural product Punicine, termed inverse Punicines. These amphoteric molecules were synthesized via a straightforward four-step route and structurally tuned for hydrophobization by alkylation. Their performance as collectors was evaluated in microflotation experiments of lithium aluminate (LiAlO2) and silicate matrix minerals such as melilite and calcium silicate. Characterization techniques including ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy as well as contact angle, zeta potential (ζ potential) and microflotation experiments revealed strong pH- and structure-dependent interactions with mineral surfaces. Notably, N-alkylated inverse Punicine derivatives showed high flotation yields for LiAlO2 at pH of 11, with a derivative possessing a dodecyl group attached to the nitrogen as collector achieving up to 86% recovery (collector conc. 0.06 mmol/L). Preliminary separation tests showed Li upgrading from 5.27% to 6.95%. Radical formation and light-response behavior were confirmed by ESR and flotation tests under different illumination conditions. These results demonstrate the potential of inverse Punicines as tunable, sustainable flotation reagents for advanced lithium recycling from complex slag systems. Full article

Current treatments against leukemia present several limitations, prompting the search for new therapeutic agents, particularly those derived from natural products. In this context, structural modifications were performed on the triterpene 3α,24-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (T1), isolated from Phoradendron wattii. Among the five derivatives obtained, 3α,24-dihydroxy-30-oxolup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (T1c) exhibited the highest activity, with an IC50 value of 12.90 ± 0.1 µM against THP-1 cells. T1c significantly reduced cell viability in both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CCRF-CEM, REH, JURKAT, and MOLT-4) and acute myeloid leukemia (THP-1) cell lines, inducing apoptosis after 48 h of treatment, while showing minimal cytotoxicity toward normal mononuclear cells (MNCs). In silico molecular docking studies were conducted against three key protein targets: BCL-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2), EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor, tyrosine kinase domain), and FLT3 (FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3). The lowest binding energies (kcal/mol) observed were as follows: T1–BCL-2: −10.12, EGFR: −12.75, FLT3: −14.05; T1c–BCL-2: −10.23, EGFR: −14.50, FLT3: −14.07; T2–BCL-2: −11.59, EGFR: −15.00, FLT3: −14.03. These findings highlight T1c as a promising candidate in the search for anti-leukemic drugs which deserves further study. Full article

Freshwater ecosystems—home to roughly 10% of known species—are losing biodiversity to river-morphology alteration, hydraulic infrastructure, and pollution, yet most ecological network (EN) studies focus on terrestrial systems and overlook hydrological connectivity under human disturbance. To address this, we devised and tested a dual EN framework in the Yangtze River Delta’s Ecological Green Integration Demonstration Zone, constructing freshwater and terrestrial networks independently before merging them. Using InVEST Habitat Quality, MSPA, the MCR model, and Linkage Mapper, we delineated sources and corridors: freshwater sources combined NDWI-InVEST indicators with a modified, sluice-weighted resistance surface, producing 78 patches (mean 348.7 ha) clustered around major lakes and 456.4 km of corridors (42.50% primary). Terrestrial sources used NDVI-InVEST with a conventional resistance surface, yielding 100 smaller patches (mean 121.6 ha) dispersed across woodlands and agricultural belts and 658.8 km of corridors (36.45% primary). Unified models typically favor large sources from dominant ecosystems while overlooking small, high-value patches in non-dominant systems, generating corridors that span both freshwater and terrestrial habitats and mismatch species migration patterns. Our dual framework better reflects species migration characteristics, accurately captures dispersal paths, and successfully integrates key agroforestry-complex patches that unified models miss, providing a practical tool for biodiversity protection in disturbed freshwater–terrestrial landscapes. Silos are strategic structures widespread in the industrial sectors for post-harvest preservation purposes. Current standards on the seismic design of silos are understandably based on approximate and simplified assumptions, leading intentionally to conservative design-oriented formulae. However, unjustified over-estimation might lead to unnecessary economic losses. As part of the authors’ analytical and experimental ongoing research on the complex seismic behavior of filled silo systems, in this short paper, an in-depth reading of the theoretical framework originally proposed during the 1970s and 1980s is provided to present a better understanding of the unexplained design-oriented formula of the seismic additional pressure in the European standard. A conceptual incongruence in the Eurocode EN1998-4:2006 is pointed out and discussed regarding the dynamic overpressure formula in the case of ground-supported flat-bottom circular silos subjected to seismic excitation. Specifically, a potential miscounting of the geometrical aspect in circular silos, with respect to rectangular ones, leads to an inconsistent amplification of the additional pressures in the range 1.65–2, depending on the filling aspect ratio of the silo. This inconsistency provides the reason for several unexplained results recently published in the scientific literature. A proposal for a physically based correction, retaining the current assumptions made by the EN1998-4, is finally given. Full article

Aluminium alloy foams have been widely used due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio, low density, and outstanding properties such as high energy absorption and effective noise and heat insulation. In this study, aluminium machining chips have been used for foam production as a potential recycling method. The process has involved solution heat treatment followed by artificial ageing. Researchers have been analysing the microhardness of both the foam and the bulk material, as well as examining their microstructures. The maximum microhardness value of the bulk material has been found to be 158 ± 2 HV1 at an ageing temperature of 175 ± 1 °C for 2 ± 0.02 h. For the foams, the highest microhardness of 150 ± 2 HV1 has been achieved after ageing at 150 ± 1 °C for 9 ± 0.02 h. Experimental planning has been carried out using Design Expert software. The optimisation process has identified 150 ± 1 °C for 2 ± 0.02 h as the optimum condition for artificial ageing. Full article
