Monitoring the activity of the autonomic nervous system, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions, plays a crucial role in studying emotional processing. However, few methods allow the dynamic tracking of parasympathetic activity. Here, we propose a testable hypothesis that ear thermography may serve as a dynamic index of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, with a time resolution of seconds. Anatomical and physiological evidence suggests that the vascular structures of the ear may be innervated in a region-specific manner by the autonomic nervous system, with the posterior regions (e.g., the helix) predominantly influenced by sympathetic activity and the anterior regions (e.g., the tragus) potentially affected by parasympathetic mechanisms. Recent thermographic studies during emotional film viewing have demonstrated distinct spatial and functional patterns: posterior regions showed a linear negative association between temperature and emotional arousal, consistent with sympathetic vasoconstriction, whereas anterior regions exhibited a non-linear (inverted-U-shaped) relationship, resembling the known non-monotonic characteristics of parasympathetic activity. These findings suggest that ear thermography may be used to assess sympathetic- and parasympathetic-related dynamic processes, although direct evidence remains to be established. Full article

Foodborne diseases present a serious public health challenge, causing roughly 600 million illnesses and 420,000 deaths annually. A significant portion of this impact is felt in Asia, where traditional fermented and dry-salted seafood, such as katsuobushi, budu, and peda, are dietary staples. These products rely on diverse microbial communities that determine their final safety, flavor, texture, and shelf life. Historically, research has centered on lactic acid bacteria (LAB), yet the functional contributions of non-LAB halotolerant species, including genera like Tetragenococcus, Staphylococcus, and Bacillus, are functionally important in these high-salinity niches. This review evaluates the transition from basic taxonomic surveys to mechanistic multi-omics approaches, integrating genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics to decode microbial functionality under selective environmental pressures. We discuss how genomic mining using platforms such as BAGEL4 and antiSMASH can uncover biosynthetic gene clusters and antimicrobial peptides, while CARD supports antimicrobial resistance monitoring. Transcriptomic analysis reveals microbial responses to osmotic stress, low water activity, and pH fluctuations, whereas proteomic profiling links gene expression to active enzymes, stress proteins, and functional biomarkers. Metabolomics captures the chemical outcomes of fermentation, including amino acids, volatile organic compounds, spoilage markers, and biogenic amines. By merging these high-dimensional datasets with artificial intelligence, researchers can move toward predictive modeling that distinguishes biological causation from simple correlation. This shift offers a strategy to improve the safety, consistency, and resilience of traditional high-salinity fermented seafood systems. Full article

Background and Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are prevalent conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated musculature, arising from a complex interplay of biomechanical, neuromuscular, and psychosocial factors. Increasing evidence supports functional interconnections among the TMJ, cervical spine, and shoulder girdle, suggesting that dysfunction in one region may influence others; however, these relationships remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between scapulohumeral trauma, postural abnormalities, and TMDs, and to assess their evolution following interdisciplinary rehabilitation. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational study with prospective follow-up was conducted in patients with scapulohumeral fractures associated with TMD and postural abnormalities. Postural parameters and the clinical features of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were evaluated at baseline and follow-up using a structured clinical assessment informed by the DC/TMD framework, together with clinical examination, electromyographic analysis, and mandibular mobility measurements. Postural evaluation was performed using digital baropodometric analysis (Free Med™ platform with FreeStep™ software, standard Medica sensor, Rome, Italy. Patients received individualized multidisciplinary treatment, including orthopaedic rehabilitation, occlusal splint therapy, physiotherapy (twice weekly), pharmacological management, and odonto-periodontal care. Statistical analyses were performed using non-parametric tests (p < 0.05). Results: Significant postural improvement was observed (p < 0.01), with the proportion of patients with normal posture increasing from 0% to 22.2% and the proportion with moderate forward lean decreasing from 53.3% to 15.6%. TMD severity decreased progressively across evaluations (Friedman χ2 = 72.35, p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences were found between treatment groups with respect to postural outcomes, although descriptive differences in TMD improvement were observed at later evaluation points. Conclusions: Interdisciplinary rehabilitation was associated with significant improvements in both postural alignment and TMD severity. Scapulohumeral trauma may be associated with alterations in TMJ function and overall posture, while multimodal therapy supports functional recovery. Further randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings. Full article

Thermal imaging, which is contact-free, light-independent, and effective in detecting skin temperature changes that reflect autonomic nervous system activity, is expected to be useful for emotion sensing. A recent thermography study demonstrated a linear relationship between ear temperatures and emotional arousal ratings. However, whether and how ear thermal changes may be nonlinearly related to subjective emotions remains untested. To address this issue, we reanalyzed a dataset that included ear thermal images and self-reported arousal ratings obtained while participants watched emotion-eliciting films. We employed linear regression and two nonlinear machine learning models: a random forest model and a ResNet-50 convolutional neural network. Model evaluation using mean squared error and correlation coefficients between actual arousal ratings and model predictions indicated that both machine learning models outperformed linear regression and that the ResNet-50 model outperformed the random forest model. Interpretation of the ResNet-50 model using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping and Shapley additive explanation methods revealed nonlinear associations between temperature changes in specific ear regions and subjective arousal ratings. These findings imply that ear thermal imaging combined with machine learning, particularly deep learning, holds promise for emotion sensing. Full article

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular disorder of the retina due to diabetes mellitus (DM). Natural products are widely used to prevent and treat various diseases caused by DM. This study aims to evaluate the effect of buah merah (Pandanus conoideus Lamk.) extract on retinal density and apoptosis in a diabetic rat model. A total of 30 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing 120–150 g were induced with diabetes using alloxan and divided into five groups: group 1 (normal control), 2 (diabetic control), 3 (diabetes + 1 mL buah merah extract), 4 (1.5 mL), and 5 (2 mL). Buah merah extract, equivalent to 12 mg total carotenoids, 10 mg total tocopherols, 1.348 mg alpha-tocopherol, and 3.4 mg beta-carotene, was administered for 14 days. Retina was examined using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining for photoreceptor and retinal ganglion cell density, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) of Caspase-3 for apoptosis. The results showed that group 3 had photoreceptor and retinal ganglion cell densities close to normal, with photoreceptor density values of 722.52 ± 147.56 and ganglion 18.73 ± 5.61. The post hoc test confirmed a significant protective effect of buah merah extract in group 3 (p-value 0.014). However, buah merah extract was found to maintain photoreceptor and retinal ganglion cell density, but no significant inhibitory effect was observed on photoreceptor or retinal ganglion cell apoptosis. Further studies are needed to better understand the mechanism and potential therapeutic effect of buah merah extract. Full article

Information on the relationship between facial thermal responses and emotional state is valuable for sensing emotion. Yet, previous research has typically relied on linear methods of analysis based on regions of interest (ROIs), which may overlook nonlinear pixel-wise information across the face. To address this limitation, we investigated the use of machine learning (ML) for pixel-level analysis of facial thermal images to estimate dynamic emotional arousal ratings. We collected facial thermal data from 20 participants who viewed five emotion-eliciting films and assessed their dynamic emotional self-reports. Our ML models, including random forest regression, support vector regression, ResNet-18, and ResNet-34, consistently demonstrated superior estimation performance compared to traditional simple or multiple linear regression models for the ROIs. To interpret the nonlinear relationships between facial temperature changes and arousal, saliency maps and integrated gradients were used for the ResNet-34 model. The results show nonlinear associations of arousal ratings in nose = tip, forehead, and cheek temperature changes. These findings imply that ML-based analysis of facial thermal images can estimate emotional arousal more effectively, pointing to potential applications of non-invasive emotion sensing for mental health, education, and human–computer interaction. Background/Objectives: Dyslexia and dysgraphia are common childhood neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by persistent reading and writing difficulties, despite normal intelligence and access to education. While typically described as cognitive–linguistic deficits, emerging research suggests potential links to orofacial dysfunction and emotional regulation issues. This study examines associations between stomatognathic anomalies, emotional dysregulation, and early indicators of dyslexia-dysgraphia risk in preschool children, aiming to strengthen early screening and intervention strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional case–control study included 689 Romanian children aged 5–7 from 11 kindergartens. Screening involved the ACTIV-BURLEA psychometric battery to evaluate language, motor, and cognitive abilities. Clinical assessments targeted dental arch form, occlusal balance, and tongue and lip function. Emotional regulation was evaluated using a standardized child behavior scale. Thirty-two children were identified as at risk for dyslexia-dysgraphia and followed longitudinally, and then compared to matched controls. Statistical analysis employed chi-square tests, Pearson correlations, t-tests, and logistic regression. Results: At follow-up, 74.19% of at-risk children received confirmed diagnoses. Tongue dysfunction (TD) (OR = 4.81, p = 0.06) and emotional dysregulation (ED) (OR = 3.94, p = 0.09) emerged as key risk indicators, though not statistically significant. Tongue dysfunction (TD) correlated with school avoidance (r = 0.76, p < 0.01), while occlusal anomalies (OAs) correlated with emotional distress (ED) (r = 0.64, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings suggest that early dyslexia-dysgraphia risk involves orofacial and emotional components. Tongue dysfunction (TD), occlusal disturbances (OA), and emotional dysregulation (ED) may offer important clinical markers. Integrating dental and emotional assessments into preschool screening may improve early identification and enable personalized intervention. Full article

Broncho-esophageal fistula (BEF) is a severe yet relatively rare connection between the bronchus and esophagus usually caused by esophageal and pulmonary malignancies. We present a case report of a 49-year-old man diagnosed with terminal lung carcinoma who developed a BEF. The thoracic computed tomography scan detected a mass in the left bronchi that partially covers and disrupts the bronchial contour in certain regions and extends to the esophageal wall. After thoroughly evaluating alternative treatment approaches, we opt for the stenting procedure due to the advanced stage of the tumor and the significantly diminished quality of life. The treatment involves the use of a partially covered metal stent that is known to exhibit lower potential to migrate. The treatment is highly successful, resulting in a significant enhancement of the patient’s quality of life, a lengthening in his survival, and the ability to pursue additional palliative treatment options. In contrast to the typical prosthesis implantation, our procedure uses a direct endoscopic visualization for the proximal deployment of a partially covered stent, offering a cost-effective and radiation-free alternative that can be particularly beneficial for BEF patients in facilities without radiology services. Despite the notable advancements witnessed in the past decade in medical and health research domain, cancer remains a prominent global cause of mortality. Moreover, the conventional treatments employed to combat this disease have been found to considerably compromise the quality of life experienced by patients due to its severe side effects. Recent in vitro studies revealed encouraging findings on the potential beneficial effects of probiotics as adjuvants of anticancer therapy, and even as possible agents for the prevention and treatment of various types of malignancies. From this standpoint, the primary objective of this work was to investigate the anticancer properties of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP) and elucidate its underlying mechanism of action. In order to investigate this matter, several doses of LP (ranging from 105 to 1010 CFU/mL) were examined in relation to melanoma cancer cell lines (A375) and breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). The cell viability findings, which were substantiated by morphological investigations and annexin V/PI assay, indicated that LP exerted inhibitory effects on cellular activity and triggered apoptosis. Additionally, upon further investigation into its mechanism, it was observed through the apoptosis assay and Western blot analysis that the administration of LP resulted in an elevation of pro-apoptotic BAX protein levels and an upregulation of cleaved poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) protein expression. Conversely, the levels of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein were found to decrease in the A375 and MCF-7 cell lines. These findings provide insight into the pro-apoptotic mechanism of action of LP in these specific cell lines. Full article

Investigating the determinants of environmental sustainability has become a very attractive and popular area of research in response to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) and COP26 targets. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to explore the effects of renewable energy, technological innovation, and the insurance market on environmental sustainability in the United States (US). This work contributes to the extant body of knowledge by exploring the effect of the insurance market on the load capacity factor (LC), specifically regarding the US. The LC tracks a certain ecological threshold by simultaneously comparing biocapacity and ecological footprint (EF), thereby providing a comprehensive empirical analysis of ecological sustainability determinants. However, this proxy includes the combined attributes of the demand and supply sides of ecological sustainability. Using the recently developed autoregressive distributed lag method, this research reveals that the insurance market adversely affects the LC in the US. The overall outcomes highlight the positive role of renewable energy, technological innovation, and the insurance market in achieving the SDGs and COP26 targets. Policy recommendations for policymakers concerning promoting renewable energy, green innovation activities, the green insurance market, and ecological regulations are also discussed. Full article

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a multifactorial, world public health problem that often develops as a consequence of acute kidney injury (AKI) and inflammation. Strategies are constantly sought to avoid and mitigate the irreversibility of this disease. One of these strategies is to decrease the inflammation features of AKI and, consequently, the transition to CKD. Methods: C57Bl6J mice were anesthetized, and surgery was performed to induce unilateral ischemia/reperfusion as a model of AKI to CKD transition. For acute studies, the animals received the Kinin B1 receptor (B1R) antagonist before the surgery, and for the chronic model, the animals received one additional dose after the surgery. In addition, B1R genetically deficient mice were also challenged with ischemia/reperfusion. Results: The absence and antagonism of B1R improved the kidney function following AKI and prevented CKD transition, as evidenced by the preserved renal function and prevention of fibrosis. The protective effect of B1R antagonism or deficiency was associated with increased levels of macrophage type 2 markers in the kidney. Conclusions: The B1R is pivotal to the evolution of AKI to CKD, and its antagonism shows potential as a therapeutic tool in the prevention of CKD following AKI. Full article

Probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus spp. are already known for their beneficial effect on human health and new research supports their role in colon cancer prevention and treatment. The current study reports the effect of different concentrations of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (LGG, 106–109 CFU/mL), alone or in association with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, 10 μM), tested against normal HaCaT cells, HT-29 colorectal adenocarcinoma and HCT-116 colorectal carcinoma cell lines. The underlying cytotoxic effect was further investigated. LGG treatment of HT-29 and HCT-116 cells caused a variety of apoptotic-related nuclear morphological changes, as revealed by DAPI staining. ELISA studies showed that LGG treatment increased caspase-3 activity and pro-apoptotic BAX protein levels while decreasing anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels and the proto-oncogene Cyclin D1. A more detailed examination of the mitochondrial function revealed that high concentrations of LGG can impair mitochondrial function in HT-29 and HCT-116 cancer cells. All of these findings suggest that LGG has a pro-apoptotic, mitochondrial-targeted, cytotoxic effect on both colon cancer cell lines studied. Full article

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious and emergency condition that may cause visual disturbance. Treatment includes pars plana vitrectomy with a tamponade such as intraocular gas or silicone oil (SO). In many countries, silicone oil is still favorable compared to intraocular gases as tamponade for reattachment of retinal detachment surgery. The application provides a higher anatomical success rate, especially in cases of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) that were previously considered untreatable. Objective assessment of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the eye with silicone oil tamponade is a challenge because of the limitations and difficulties in taking images. This study aims to assess the RNFL thickness changes in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment patients using SO tamponade and its subsequent removal conducted on a total of 35 post-operative RRD patients. Central macular and RNFL thickness, as well as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), were recorded at the time of tamponade and after the removal of the SO at 1, 4, and 8 weeks, respectively. The results showed that the changes in RNFL thickness significantly decreased in the group of ≤6 months, especially in the superior and temporal quadrants, and BCVA increased after SO removal (p < 0.05). Central macular thickness was significant (p < 0.001) at the end of the visit. Improved visual acuity is associated with decreased RNFL and central macular thickness after SO removal. Full article

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide and, even though several advances have been made in terms of specific treatment, the late-stage detection and the associated side effects of the conventional drugs sustain the search for better treatment alternatives. Probiotics are live microorganisms that have been proven to possess numerous health benefits for human hosts, including anticancer effects. In the present study, the in vitro effect of the association of two probiotic strains (PBT), Lactobacillus sporogenes and Clostridium butyricum, were tested against colon (HT-29 and HCT 116), lung (A549), and liver (HepG2) cancer cell lines, alone or in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5FU). Moreover, the underlying mechanism of PBT and PBT-5FU against the HT-29 cell line was evaluated using the Hoechst 33342 staining, revealing characteristic apoptotic modifications, such as chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation, and membrane blebbing. Furthermore, the increase in the expression of pro-apoptotic Bax, Bid, Bad, and Bak proteins and the inhibition of the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL proteins were recorded. Collectively, these findings suggest that the two strains of probiotic bacteria, alone or in association with 5FU, induce apoptosis in colon cancer cells and may serve as a potential anticancer treatment. Skin injuries, and especially wounds of chronic nature, can cause a major negative impact on the quality of life. New efficient alternatives are needed for wound healing therapy and herbal products are being investigated due to a high content of natural compounds with promising healing activity. For this purpose, we investigated three Artemisia species, Artemisia absinthium L. (AAb), Artemisia dracunculus L. (ADr) and Artemisia annua L. (AAn). Ethanolic extracts, containing different polyphenolic compounds, elicited strong antioxidant activities in the DPPH assay, comparable to ascorbic acid. Human ketratinocyte proliferation was stimulated and wound closure was enhanced by all three extracts at concentrations of 100 µg/mL. The Artemisia extracts modulated angiogenesis by increasing vessel formation, especially following treatment with A. annua and A. dracunculus, extracts with a significantly higher content of chlorogenic acid. Good tolerability and anti-irritative effects were also registered in ovo, on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). The three Artemisia species represent promising low-cost, polyphenol-rich, antioxidant, safe alternatives for wound care treatment. Full article
