Chilean Schinus molle has been used in traditional medicine for effects such as antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiviral, antitumoral, antioxidant, antispasmodic, astringent, antipyretic, cicatrizant, cytotoxic, diuretic, among others. In this study, we evaluated the pharmacological potential of Schinus molle seed essential oil extract (SM_EO) through in vitro and in silico approaches. In vitro, the antioxidant potential was analyzed, and antitumor activity was evaluated in non-tumor and human epithelial tumor cell lines. Caenorhabditis elegans was used as a model for evaluating toxicity, and the chemical composition of the SM_EO was analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The oil contained four major monoterpenes: α-phellandrene (34%), β-myrcene (23%), limonene (13%), and β-phellandrene (7%). Based on quantum mechanical calculations, the reactivity of the molecules present in the SM_EO was estimated. The results indicated that α- phellandrene, β-phellandrene, and β-myrcene showed the highest nucleophilic activity. In addition, the compounds following these as candidates for antioxidant and antiproliferative activities were α-phellandrene, β-phellandrene, ρ-cymene, sabinene, caryophyllene, l-limonene, and α-pinene, highlighting β-myrcene. Based on ADME-Tox properties, it is feasible to use these compounds as new drug candidates. Moreover, the antibacterial activity MIC value obtained for B. cereus was equivalent to 2 μg/mL, and for Y. enterocolitica, S. enteritidis, and S. typhimurium, the MIC value was 32.5 μg/μL. SM_EO could selectively inhibit the proliferation of human epithelial mammary tumor MCF7 cells treated with SM_EOs at 64 and 16 ug/mL—a significant increase in BCL-2 in a dose-dependent manner—and showed low toxicity against Caenorhabditis elegans (from 10 to 0.078 mg·mL−1). These findings suggest that SM_EO may be a potential source of bioactive compounds, encouraging further investigation for applications in veterinary medicine, cosmetics, and sanitation. Full article

The white oil-bearing rose (R. alba L.) is the second of the industrially important rose species for Bulgarian rose cultivation and essential oil production. In recent years, the interest in white oil-bearing rose has increased, following the worldwide trend for searching for new aromatic alternatives. Therefore, the purpose of the current research is to evaluate the volatile compounds profile of fresh R. alba L. flowers using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). More than 75 individual compounds were identified and quantified using HS-SPME-GC/MS. The study revealed that the aroma-bearing fraction of rose volatiles consists mainly of monoterpene alcohols; 2-phenylethanol was the most abundant component (8.4–33.9%), followed by geraniol (12.8–32.5%) and citronellol + nerol (17.7–26.5%). Linalool, α-pinene, β-myrcene, and rose oxides were also observed in low concentrations. The stearopten fraction in the HS phase was observed in low concentration, with main representatives nonadecane + nonadecene, heptadecane, heneicosane, and tricosane. The HS-GC profile of the R. alba fresh flowers shows distinct differences in relative abundance of the components between the two studied clones of the population, as well as between volatiles in petals and in the whole blossom. The absence of some undesirable components, such as allergenic and potentially carcinogenic methyl eugenol in fresh R. alba blossom, makes white oil-bearing rose a promising alternative to R. damascena in perfumery, natural cosmetics, and aromatherapy. Dried lemon slices (LSs) have become increasingly popular as a healthful beverage when infused in hot water. This study examined the effects of freeze drying (FD), hot air drying (HAD), heat pump drying (HPD), and far-infrared drying (FID) on the quality of dried LSs and their brewed beverages. The results show that FD-LSs and their corresponding beverages have the most appealing appearance and maximum levels of ascorbic acid (2.47 and 0.80 mg/g, respectively), synephrine (8.15 and 0.94 mg/g, respectively), and the overwhelming majority of natural and available phenolic compounds, as well as the strongest antioxidant activity, although numerous volatile compounds in FD-LSs were in the lowest abundances. HPD-LSs exhibited similar trends to FD-LSs but contained the peak concentrations of limonene (2258.87 μg/g), γ-terpinene (704.19 μg/g), β-pinene (502.92 μg/g), and α-pinene (188.91 μg/g), which were the four most abundant volatile compounds in dried LSs. Additionally, active ingredients in HPD-LSs generally featured relative high levels of available amounts. In contrast, HAD- and FID-LSs typically displayed unfavorable coloration and low retention levels of natural and available active ingredients. Consequently, FD and HPD demonstrate superior suitability for the commercial-scale production of dried LSs. Full article

Tomicus yunnanensis Kirkendall and Faccoli, a native bark beetle species and key pest of Pinus yunnanensis Franch. in southwestern China, relies on host-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for host selection. To unravel these mechanisms, we collected VOCs from P. yunnanensis trunks across four infestation stages (healthy, early-infested, weakened, near-dead) using dynamic headspace sampling. Chemical profiling via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 51 terpenoids, with α-pinene as the most abundant component. VOC profiles differed markedly between healthy and early-infested trees, while gradual shifts in compound diversity and abundance occurred from the weakened to near-dead stages. Bioactive compounds were screened using gas chromatography–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and a Y-tube olfactometer. Electrophysiological responses in T. yunnanensis were triggered by α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene, 2-thujene, and 4-allylanisole. Behavioral tests revealed that α-pinene, 3-carene, and 2-thujene acted as attractants, whereas β-pinene and 4-allylanisole functioned as repellents. These results indicate that infestation-induced VOC dynamics guide beetle behavior, with attractants likely promoting host colonization during early infestation and repellents signaling deteriorating host suitability in later stages. By mapping these chemical interactions, our study identifies potential plant-derived semiochemicals for targeted pest management. Integrating these compounds with pheromones could enhance the monitoring and control strategies for T. yunnanensis, offering ecologically sustainable solutions for pine ecosystems. Full article

Compositional Variability of Essential Oils and Their Bioactivity in Native and Invasive Erigeron Species

To date, various species of Erigeron genus have been used both in the ethnopharmacology of numerous nations across the world and in contemporary herbal practices. The objective of this study is to revise the phytochemical data on the essential oils (EOs) of various fleabanes species and to evaluate the variability of their biological activities. Up to June 2025, this review provides an updated overview of 105 literature sources (published during last 25 years) related to 14 Erigeron sp. (native, naturalized, or invasive) which have been investigated extensively and are of the greatest significance. It summarizes the compositional variability of the EOs and their pharmacological and toxic effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiproliferative, skin regeneration, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, insecticidal, larvicidal, repellent, and allelopathic activity. The EOs of each Erigeron species were characterized, and a chemical structure of 43 major constituents is presented herein. The most characteristic and prevalent compounds were found to be limonene, δ-3-carene, matricaria ester, lachnophyllum ester, germacrene D, β-caryophyllene, β-farnesene, α-bergamotene, allo-aromadendrene, etc., in the EOs from the E. acris, E. annuus, E. bonariensis, E. canadensis, E. floribundus E. mucronatus, and E. speciosus plants. Major constituents, such as borneol, bornyl acetate, modhephen-8-β-ol, cis-arteannuic alcohol, β-caryophyllene, and τ-cadinol, were found in the oils of E. graveolens (Inula graveolens). A paucity of data concerning E. incanus EOs was revealed, with the prevalence of 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinammic acid and thymol acetate noted in the oils. The EOs from E. multiradiatus and E. sublyratus were comprised mainly of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters. The available data on EOs of E. ramosus is limited, but the main constituents are known to be α-humulene, 1,8-cineole, eugenol, and globulol. The EOs containing appreciable amounts of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters exhibited strong anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, larvicidal, and repellent activities. Repellence is also related to borneol, bornyl acetate, caryophyllene derivatives, τ-cadinol, modhephen-8-β-ol, and cis-arteannuic alcohol. Cytotoxicity was determined due to the presence of limonene, δ-3-carene, α- and β-farnesene, (E)-β-ocimene, ledene oxide, sesquiphellandrene, and dendrolasin in the fleabanes EOs. Skin regeneration and antifungal properties were related to germacrene D; and anti-inflammatory effects were determined due to high amounts of limonene (E)-β-ocimene, lachnophyllum ester, and germacrene D. The antimicrobial properties of the oils were conditioned by appreciable quantities of limonene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, carvacrol, thymol acetae, β-eudesmol, 2,6,7,7α-tetrahydro-1,5-dimethyl-1H-indene-3-carboxaldehyde, caryophyllene and its oxide, allo-aromadendrene, α-humulene, farnesene, carvacrol, and eugenol. This review provides a foundation for further studies on volatile secondary metabolites to explore the potential sources of new biologically active compounds in Erigeron sp. Full article

In Silico Evaluation of Terpene Interactions with Inflammatory Enzymes: A Blind Docking Study Targeting Arachidonic Acid Metabolism

Terpenes represent a structurally diverse class of natural compounds with increasing scientific interest due to their potential anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigates the in silico binding behavior of six plant-derived terpenes—α-pinene, β-pinene, menthol, camphor, limonene, and linalool—against four key enzymes in the arachidonic acid (AA) metabolic pathway: cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), and phospholipase A2 (PLA2). AA serves as a reference for binding energy comparison. Blind rigid-body molecular docking is performed using AutoDock 4.2 and the Lamarckian Genetic Algorithm, with 100 runs per ligand–enzyme pair and the energy-based selection of optimal poses. The analysis includes binding energy (ΔG), inhibition constants (Ki), root-mean-square deviation (RMSD), and residue-level interactions. Several terpenes exhibit favorable binding energies and inhibition constants across the evaluated enzymes. For COX-1 and COX-2, menthol and camphor show low Ki values, indicating stable binding. Menthol and limonene also show the strongest affinities for PLA2, exceeding AA. The focus is on compounds with potential to modulate arachidonic acid metabolism. In this context, β-pinene engages the catalytic site of PLA2, linalool forms multiple contacts within key regions of 5-LOX, and menthol, α-pinene, and β-pinene align with functionally important regions in both COX isoforms. These targeted interactions suggest that the highlighted compounds may selectively interfere with enzymatic activity in inflammation-related pathways. By modulating key steps in AA metabolism, these terpenes may influence the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators, offering a promising avenue for the development of safer, plant-derived anti-inflammatory agents. The findings lay the groundwork for further experimental validation and the structure-based optimization of terpene-derived modulators. Full article

Aloysia triphylla is widely used in traditional medicine from Peru for its sedative, digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. However, comprehensive studies on the biological activities of its essential oil (EO), particularly from Peruvian sources, remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition and enantiomeric profile of A. triphylla EO and evaluate its antibacterial, antioxidant, anticholinesterase, and cytotoxic activities. The EO was obtained by steam distillation and analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 62 compounds were identified, with (E)-caryophyllene (16.80%), β-pinene (9.96%), and germacrene D (10.00%) being the major components. Enantiomeric analysis revealed specific chiral signatures, including (−)-α-pinene, (+)-limonene, and (R)-(−)-linalool. The EO exhibited significant antibacterial activity, particularly against Bacillus subtilis (MIC = 5 µg/mL), and weak antioxidant activity (IC50 = 7720 and 4648 µg/mL for DPPH and ABTS, respectively). Additionally, the EO demonstrated moderate acetylcholinesterase inhibition (IC50 = 87.8 µg/mL) and cytotoxicity in the Artemia salina assay (LC50 = 964 µg/mL). These findings suggest that A. triphylla EO possesses promising bioactivities with potential applications in pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. Full article

Metabolomic Insights into Volatile Profiles and Flavor Enhancement of Spice-Smoked Chicken Wings

Traditional smoking techniques, while historically valued for preservation and flavor enhancement, face limitations in aromatic diversity and safety, prompting exploration of spice-derived alternatives to meet modern culinary demands. This study explores the volatile compound profiles and aroma modulation of chicken wings smoked with four spices—cardamom, rosemary, mint, and rose—using a novel, household-friendly smoking protocol. The method combines air fryer pre-cooking (180 °C, 16 min) with electric griddle-based smoke infusion, followed by HS-SPME/GC-TOF/MS, relative odor activity value (ROAV) calculations, and metabolomic analysis. A total of 314 volatile compounds were identified across five samples. Among them, 45 compounds demonstrated odor activity values (ROAV) ≥ 1, contributing to green, woody, floral, and sweet aroma attributes. Eucalyptol displayed the highest ROAV (2543), underscoring its dominant sensory impact. Metabolomic profiling revealed a general upregulation of differential volatiles post-smoking: terpenes were enriched in wings smoked with cardamom, rosemary, and mint, while aldehydes and alcohols predominated in rose-smoked samples. An integrated screening based on ROAV and metabolomic data identified 24 key volatiles, including eucalyptol, β-myrcene, methanethiol, and α-pinene, which collectively defined the aroma signatures of spice-smoked wings. Spice-specific aroma enrichment and sensory properties were evident: rosemary intensified woody–spicy notes, mint enhanced herbal freshness, and rose amplified floral attributes. The proposed method demonstrated advantages in safety, ease of use, and flavor customization, aligning with clean-label trends and supporting innovation in home-based culinary practices. Moreover, it facilitates the tailored modulation of smoked meat flavor profiles, thereby enhancing product differentiation and broadening consumer acceptance. Full article

In light of the increasing demand for laurel, driven by renewed interest in natural products and traditional medicinal usage of this plant, our study aimed to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of essential oils from leaves and fruits of laurel (EOL and EOF, respectively) collected in the National Park Skadar Lake, Montenegro, as it related to their chemical composition, assessing the possibility of their usage in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Also, fatty oil from the remaining laurel fruit after EOF isolation was investigated as a possible source of bioactive compounds. The most abundant components in EOL and EOF were 1,8-cineol (35.1% and 33.3%, respectively) and α-terpinyl acetate (10.4% and 7.0%, respectively). Linalool (7.6%) was found in EOL, while α- pinene (5.8%) and β-elemene (5.7%) were present in significant amounts in EOF. Antibacterial and antifungal properties of EOL and EOF showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis, and potent antifungal effects against Candida albicans, opening the door for their application as antimicrobial agents. Chemical analysis of fatty oil unexpectedly revealed prominent content of sesquiterpene lactone dehydrocostunolide and phenylpropanoid derivative (E)-2-hexyl-cinnamaldehyde (21% and 5%, respectively), suggesting further investigations of this waste material as the source of valuable compounds with proven health benefits. The evaluation of region-specific aroma characteristics in green tea remains critical for quality control. This study systematically analyzed eight Tongcheng Xiaohua tea samples (standard and premium batches) originating from four distinct regions using sensory analysis, electronic nose (E-nose), headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), and chemometrics. The E-nose results demonstrated that the volatile characteristics of Tongcheng Xiaohua tea exhibit distinct geographical signatures, confirming the regional specificity of its aroma. HS-SPME-GC-MS identified 66 volatile metabolites across samples, with 18 key odorants (OAV > 1) including linalool, geraniol, (Z)-jasmone, and β-ionone driving aroma profiles. The partial least squares–discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model, combined with variable importance in projection (VIP) scores and OAV, identified seven compounds that effectively differentiate the origins, among which α-pinene and β-cyclocitral emerged as novel markers imparting unique regional characteristics. Further comparative analysis between standard and premium grades revealed 2-methyl butanal, 3-methyl butanal, and dimethyl sulfide as main differential metabolites. Notably, the influence of geographical origin on metabolite profiles was found to be more significant than batch effects. These findings establish a robust analytical framework for origin traceability, quality standardization, and flavor optimization in tea production, providing valuable insights for the tea industry. With the increasing popularity of traditional Chinese sausages both domestically and internationally, the flavor characteristics of sausages have become an important topic in food science research. However, comparative studies on the flavor differences between different types of traditional Chinese sausages are still limited. This study aimed to systematically compare the flavor profiles of three representative types of traditional Chinese sausages (Cantonese, Five-Spice, and Mala sausages), with 20 samples randomly selected from one batch of 100 sausages per type produced in December 2024, using a combination of headspace gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), amino acid analysis, electronic sensory analysis, and sensory evaluation techniques. Sensory evaluation revealed that Mala sausage exhibited a strong and numbing flavor. Cantonese sausage was characterized by sweet and alcoholic notes, while Five-Spice sausage displayed a more subtle and gentle flavor profile. A total of 39 volatile compounds were identified, with 2-methyl-1-butanol, 2-butanone, and butanal being the most abundant across all samples. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) further pinpointed (+)-limonene, (Z)-ocimene, α-terpinene, β-myrcene, β-pinene, γ-terpinene, 2-pentanol, 2-octanone, and 1-hexanal as the key differential compounds responsible for the distinct flavor characteristics of each sausage type. Additionally, the free amino acid content in Mala sausage was significantly higher than that in the others, with glutamic acid and proline playing pivotal roles in shaping the taste profiles. These findings provide valuable theoretical and technical insights for the identification and control of flavor in sausage production, offering a scientific basis for guiding consumer preferences in sausages’ selection. Among the numerous diseases that affect papaya (Carica papaya L.) cultivation, anthracnose, caused by a complex of fungi from the genus Colletotrichum spp., stands out, primarily due to its damage to the commercial part of the papaya, the fruit, specifically the pulp. Although chemical control with synthetic molecules is the most commonly used method to combat anthracnose, it is not the most appropriate solution. The indiscriminate use of synthetic chemical products results in numerous harmful effects on the environment, the health of farmers, and the final consumers. Given these circumstances, the objective of this study was to analyze the efficacy of essential oils (EOs) from Citrus aurantium var. dulcis L., known as sweet orange, Citrus limon (L.), known as Sicilian lemon, and the major compound present in these oils, limonene, against the pathogens Colletotrichum okinawense, which cause anthracnose in papaya fruits. The percentage inhibition of mycelial growth was evaluated on the seventh day, with estimates of 50% and 90% inhibition, to compare the inhibitory effect among the fungal isolates. Chromatographic analysis revealed that sweet orange EO contains myrcene and limonene. Sicilian lemon essential oil includes myrcene, limonene, α- and β-pinene, and γ-terpinene. Both EOs and limonene exhibited activity against C. okinawense. The 50 µL/mL concentration was the most effective in inhibiting growth. The EOs and limonene showed similar IC50 values, with limonene at 48 µL/mL, Sicilian lemon EO at 51 µL/mL, and sweet orange EO at 57 µL/mL. Full article

Mastic gum, a plant-based resin from mastic trees, has become very popular in recent years and has been used in various food products due to its strong and positive aroma properties. In the present study, key odorant compounds of the mastic gum (MG) samples obtained from mastic gum trees (Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia) from two different countries, Türkiye (MGT) and Greece (MGG), were investigated and compared. The aroma-active compounds (AACs) were determined by aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) and by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O). The two mastic gum samples exhibited similar aroma profiles but significant differences were observed in their concentrations. Among the aroma groups identified in both samples, monoterpenes were the most abundant group with α-pinene as the main compound followed by β-myrcene and β-pinene. On the other hand, the most dominant AAC in both samples was determined to be α-pinene (resinous, forest-like odor), followed by β-pinene (resinous, terpene-like odor), β-myrcene (pine-like, greenish odor), and linalool (floral, fruity odor), all of which had high flavor dilution (FD) values. The findings of the AEDA and sensory analysis revealed that the MGT sample contained more floral and fruity odors while the MGG sample had more resinous and pine-woody odors. Full article

Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray forms high-density impenetrable monospecific stands as an invasive plant species. Its life history traits, such as high adaptability with high genetic variation under different environmental conditions, and high growth and reproductive capacity, may contribute to its success in invading and increasing its population in the introduced ranges. Evidence has accumulated in the literature for the activity of compounds involved in the invasive characteristics of Tithonia diversifolia against natural enemies such as herbivorous insects and mammals, pathogenic nematodes, fungi, and viruses, and of allelochemicals against neighboring competitive plant species. Tagitinin A, tagitinin C, 1β-methoxydiversifolin, phytol, phytol acetate, α-pinene, bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane,4-methylene-1-(1-methylethyl), hispidulin, dihydro-p-coumaric acid, and methyl linoleate are toxic to herbivorous insects, and tagitinin C and 5-O-(E)-caffeoylquinic acid are harmful to herbivorous mammals. Tirotundin has nematocidal activity. α-Pinene, camphor, eucalyptol, and α-terpineol have fungicidal activity. Tagitinin A, tagitinin C, and 1β-methoxydiversifolin-3-O-methyl ether have antiviral activity. Tagitinin A, tagitinin C, 1β-methoxydiversifolin, and hispidulin act as allelochemicals that inhibit the growth of neighboring competing plant species. The ability to outcompete natural enemies and competing plant species is one of the essential factors for infestation and increase in the population and distribution of Tithonia diversifolia in new habitats. Therefore, these compounds may be involved in the invasive characteristics of Tithonia diversifolia. This is the first review article focusing on the compounds involved in the invasive characteristics of Tithonia diversifolia. Full article

The solutions of essential oil (0.5%, 0.8%, and 1.0% w/v) derived from Achillea millefoilum (EOAM) were evaluated for their repellent and insecticidal activity toward Acrobasis advenella, as well as their effects on the activity of selected larval tissue enzymes. The chemical composition of the EOAM analyzed by GC-MS showed that the main compounds included β-pinene, chamazulene, eucalyptol, and β-caryophyllene. Selection tests showed that larvae avoided inflorescences treated with 0.8% and 1.0% EOAM concentrations. The mortality of larvae increased with concentration and time of exposure to the EO, and the highest mortality rate was observed after 72 h. In addition, the impact of EO was examined on the activity of catalase (CAT), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POX), α- and β-glucosidases, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), i.e., important antioxidants, detoxification, digestive, and nervous system enzymes. A significant increase in CAT activity was found in larvae treated with 0.8% and 1.0% EOAM after both 24 and 48 h. Initially, treating larvae with 0.5% EO decreased β-glucosidase activity while increasing α-glucosidase activity. Moreover, 0.8% EOAM inhibited the activity of POX. These findings suggest that EOAM can affect important biochemical processes within the tissues of A. advenella larvae, making it a promising agent for the protection of black chokeberry crops.
