Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Streptococcus pneumoniae remains one of the leading causes of pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and otitis media worldwide. It particularly affects young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Despite the substantial success of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in reducing disease burden, challenges such as serotype replacement, vaccine escape, and the emergence of non-vaccine strains continue to threaten global public health. A deeper understanding of host–pathogen interactions is essential for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying pneumococcal colonization, immune evasion, invasion, and disease progression. Recent advances in immunology, molecular microbiology, genomics, proteomics, and systems biology have provided new insights into the complex interplay between S. pneumoniae and the host immune system. Simultaneously, these discoveries are driving the development of innovative vaccine strategies, including protein-based, serotype-independent, and universal pneumococcal vaccines.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in pneumococcal pathogenesis, host immune responses, virulence mechanisms, vaccine research, and translational approaches that contribute to the prevention and control of pneumococcal diseases.
