Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, major political and scientific discussions internationally have focused on issues related to the energy and environmental transition. The use of renewable and low-environmental-impact sources must be further encouraged in order to reduce pollution and CO2 emissions. For years, the agricultural and forestry sectors have been among the most energy-intensive; implementing an effective energy transition in these sectors without hindering their advancement is complicated but possible thanks to incentives, policies encouraging more sustainable energy use and new technologies on the market.
This Special Issue will explore the role of the energy transition in agriculture and forestry, addressing key political, technological and environmental challenges and providing a multidisciplinary perspective on sustainable energy solutions, innovative technologies and policy and regulatory frameworks driving decarbonization and resilience in agricultural and forestry systems. Contributions will focus on the integration of renewable energy in agriculture and forestry, the development of bio- and agroenergy, climate change mitigation strategies and the socioeconomic, political and legal implications of the energy transition in these sectors. Special attention will be given to technologies that enable the real integration of the agricultural, food and forestry industries and energy production in order to achieve energy independence for farms. This Special Issue seeks to promote discussion on best practices and the regulatory approaches and technological advances necessary to support a sustainable and efficient transition in this sector and achieve the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.
We welcome the submission of manuscripts on the following themes:
- Energy policies and regulations;
- Energy security and decarbonisation;
- The green energy transition in the agricultural and forestry sectors;
- Energy management in the agricultural and forestry sectors;
- Bio- and agroenergy production;
- Agrivoltaic systems;
- New technologies enabling synergy between agriculture, forestry and energy production;
- Best practices and strategies for the development of a sustainable energetic system for businesses;
- Natural resource policies and planning;
- Adaptations to and the mitigation of climate change in agriculture and forestry.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
