Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Pollution and degradation of aquatic environments are among the most serious current global environmental problems. Rivers and lakes serve as a direct or indirect sink for various contaminants that threaten the natural environment and human well-being. Aquatic ecosystems serve both important ecological and economic functions. Therefore, addressing problems of aquatic pollution monitoring and mitigation methods is crucial for developing management and protection strategies and has become a top priority for sustainable development. Effective protection of water resources is today one of the main challenges for researchers and policymakers. Here, it is our pleasure to announce a new Special Issue, “Monitoring and Mitigating Pollutants in Aquatic Environments”, of the journal Sustainability.
This Special Issue will focus on advanced monitoring and mitigation solutions for pollution of aquatic environments. The goal is to better understand current technological advances and expand knowledge of the fate and impacts of pollutants in aquatic environments to propose sustainable solutions for polluted ecosystems. This may include addressing pollution risks, evidence-based planning and management, and proposing methods for monitoring and protection.
We invite original research articles and critical reviews on topics related (but not limited) to:
- Recognizing and determining the characteristics and distribution of pollution in aquatic environments;
- Ecological risk of pollution in aquatic environments;
- Contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environments;
- Monitoring and protection of water, sediment, and biota;
- Environmental monitoring and assessment in aquatic environments;
- Remote sensing technologies for monitoring of pollution in aquatic environments;
- Theory and methods of pollution control in aquatic environments;
- Protection strategies for natural and artificial water bodies;
- Development for environmental management and social, economic, or political aspects of environmental sustainability;
- Sustainable solutions and techniques for pollution mitigation in aquatic environments, e.g., phytoremediation, constructed wetlands.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
