Advances in Sustainable Battery Energy Storage Systems

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) represent a critical innovation in modern energy management and sustainability efforts. As the global energy landscape shifts towards renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, the inherent intermittency and unpredictability of these sources necessitate reliable storage solutions to ensure grid stability and energy security. BESSs provide a means to store excess energy generated during periods of high renewable output and release it during times of low generation or high demand, thus smoothing out supply fluctuations and enhancing the resilience of energy systems. Research in this field focuses on improving the efficiency, capacity, lifespan, and environmental impact of battery technologies. Recent advancements in materials science, electrochemical processes, and system integration have significantly enhanced the performance and sustainability of BESSs. These developments not only support the transition to a low-carbon economy by enabling the greater use of renewables but also contribute to the broader goals of energy efficiency and conservation. Consequently, the study of sustainable battery energy storage systems is of paramount importance for achieving a sustainable energy future, addressing climate change, and meeting the growing global energy demand in an environmentally responsible manner. We would therefore like to invite you to contribute a paper on this issue.

This Special Issue aims to explore the latest advancements and innovations in sustainable battery energy storage systems (BESSs) from an electrical engineering perspective. The integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid necessitates the development of efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy storage solutions. This issue seeks to bring together leading researchers, industry experts, and practitioners to share their cutting-edge research, practical experiences, and theoretical insights in the field of BESSs within electrical engineering. The ultimate objective is to advance the state of the art in battery storage technologies and support the transition to a more resilient and sustainable electrical grid.

The scope of this Special Issue covers a broad range of topics related to sustainable battery energy storage systems within the realm of electrical engineering, including but not limited to the following:

• Innovations in lithium-ion, solid-state, flow, and other advanced battery technologies tailored for electrical engineering applications.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and insightful perspectives that contribute to the understanding and advancement of sustainable battery energy storage systems in electrical engineering. Contributions that demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches, practical applications, and innovative solutions are particularly encouraged.
