Special Issue Information
Doctors have used medical images to diagnose diseases for decades. Using artificial intelligence (especially deep learning) to process and recognize medical images is widely practiced.
There are currently three main types of medical images. Radiographic images are used to show some features at the organ level; molecular images are obtained through electron microscopy and can show details at the molecular level; histopathological images and molecular images are obtained by invasive methods. Due to the breakthrough of AI, especially deep learning, it is shown in previous research that all these three typical medical images have already been applied for disease detection, diagnosis, and prognosis prediction by using artificial intelligence-based medical image processing methods. These AI-based approaches have even been utilized to identify disease biomarkers for disease progression prediction and earlier and more accurate diagnosis, which demonstrates that more medical expenses and lives can be saved. Therefore, AI-based image processing and medical applications have significant economic and social benefits and have attracted much attention recently.
This Special Issue will focus on AI-based solutions and applications developed to meet the challenges of medical image processing, analysis and classification. In particular, it will identify innovative AI-based technologies for disease detection, diagnosis, and prognosis prediction. It will focus on how to use these technologies to improve the quality and efficiency of medical image-based diagnosis in current and future applications. It will include technologies such as denoising, segmentation, clustering, feature extraction, classification, and rapid and effective disease diagnosis.
The Special Issue will welcome submissions of original research articles, case studies, and critical reviews on a wide range of topics including, but not limited to:
2D/3D/4D image segmentation using deep learning;
Artificial Intelligence solutions for the analysis of X-ray images;
AI-based detection and classification of knee diseases;
Biometric recognition system using deep learning;
AI-based reconstruction, segmentation, registration, and classification of MRI images;
Artificial Intelligence in lung tumor/cancer imaging diagnoses;
AI applications in molecular imaging and nuclear medicine;
AI models for imaging diagnosis;
AI-aided diagnosis for liver tumors in ultrasonography;
Breast imaging studies using Artificial Intelligence;
AI-based automated detection of particles in 2D and 3D images;

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
