Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the launch of this Special Issue, “Innovations in Renewable Methane Production from Biomass and Waste”, to be published in Processes, an open-access MDPI journal dedicated to advancing research in sustainable energy and environmental technologies.

This Special Issue aims to showcase scientific and technological advancements in renewable methane production, with a particular focus on pretreatment technologies, anaerobic digestion (AD) optimization, catalytic and biological upgrading methods, and AI-assisted process control. In addition to studies on lignocellulosic biomass, organic waste, and synthetic methane pathways, we also welcome contributions that assess the regional potential of biomethane production through resource mapping, spatial analysis, and feasibility studies.

By integrating process innovation with location-specific applicability, this Special Issue seeks to promote scalable, sustainable, and context-aware solutions. We invite original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and practical case studies on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced pretreatment strategies for lignocellulosic biomass;
  • Innovations in anaerobic digestion modeling and reactor engineering;
  • Biogas upgrading, methanation, and catalytic conversion processes;
  • Integration of machine learning and data-driven optimization in biogas systems;
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic evaluation;
  • Policy, regulatory, and distribution frameworks for biomethane deployment.

Researchers, engineers, and practitioners in the fields of renewable energy, environmental biotechnology, chemical engineering, and systems optimization are warmly invited to contribute. All submissions will undergo rigorous peer-review and benefit from MDPI’s efficient publication workflow.

We look forward to receiving your high-quality contributions, which will help shape the next generation of renewable methane technologies and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
