Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid development of renewable energy and emerging electricity loads is reshaping the planning and operation of modern energy systems. Large-scale integration of photovoltaic and wind power has introduced greater variability and spatial heterogeneity, while the growth of data centers and other computing-intensive loads is creating new interactions between electricity supply and computing demand. At the same time, the increasing scale of renewable energy assets has made accurate condition assessment and intelligent operation and maintenance increasingly important.

These changes call for new methods that go beyond conventional energy system analysis. Intelligent modeling can provide a better understanding of complex operating characteristics and renewable energy variability. Coordinated planning and optimization can exploit the complementary characteristics of wind, photovoltaics, storage, and flexible loads. Meanwhile, advances in artificial intelligence, sensing, and digital twins are enabling more accurate fault diagnosis, performance evaluation, and lifecycle management of renewable energy assets. In particular, the growing coupling between power systems and computing infrastructure opens up new opportunities for coordinated scheduling, renewable energy consumption, and carbon-aware operation.

This Special Issue focuses on recent advances in intelligent modeling, optimization, and control of energy systems, with particular interest in renewable energy integration, coordinated planning and operation, power–computing interaction, and intelligent asset management. We welcome original research articles and reviews that present new theories, methods, models, or engineering applications. Studies combining physical mechanisms with data-driven approaches, as well as those addressing practical challenges in renewable energy systems, are particularly encouraged. Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Intelligent modeling, forecasting, and data-driven analysis of renewable energy systems;
  • Coordinated planning and operation of photovoltaic, wind, energy storage, and flexible resources;
  • Coupled modeling and coordinated optimization of power and computing systems, including data centers and flexible computing loads;
  • Intelligent fault diagnosis, condition assessment, and performance evaluation of photovoltaic and other renewable energy assets;
  • Digital twins and intelligent operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems.

We hope that this Special Issue will provide a forum for researchers and engineers to share recent progress and practical experience in the intelligent planning, operation, and management of future energy systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
