Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid development of sustainable packaging technologies has stimulated increasing interest in smart polymer-based materials with advanced functionalities, environmental compatibility, and application-oriented performance. This Special Issue, “Smart Polymer-Based Materials for Packaging Engineering”, aims to showcase recent advances in the design, fabrication, characterization, and application of innovative polymer materials for next-generation packaging systems. Contributions focusing on biodegradable polymers, bio-based polymers, polymer composites, nanostructured materials, and functional polymer coatings are particularly encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, active and intelligent packaging, antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging materials, stimuli-responsive polymers, barrier enhancement strategies, sustainable polymer processing, and advanced characterization of packaging-related properties. Special attention will be given to the development of multifunctional polymer systems integrating mechanical strength, gas and moisture barrier performance, safety, and environmental sustainability. This Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers to exchange emerging concepts and technologies toward the development of high-performance, smart, and sustainable polymer-based packaging materials for food, biomedical, and industrial applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
Publisher’s Notice
Following discussions between the Polymers editorial office and the Guest Editor, two new Guest Editors, Dr. Qingshan Duan and Dr. Peng Lu, have been added to the Special Issue. This change has been approved by the journal Editorial Board, and the Special Issue website has been updated accordingly on 29 July 2026. The Special Issue will continue to be handled by the new Guest Editor team in accordance with MDPI’s Special Issue and editorial policies.
