Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Plant active ingredients are predominantly secondary metabolites, whose biosynthesis, spatiotemporal accumulation and dynamic modulation constitute sophisticated biological processes that determine plant medicinal values, quality characteristics and ecological adaptability. Biosynthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolism in plants are precisely modulated by multilayered molecular regulatory networks. Therefore, in-depth research on the regulatory mechanisms of plant secondary metabolism can not only reveal the trade-off relationship between plant growth and secondary metabolic defense, and clarify the internal coupling rules among plant morphogenesis, cell differentiation and active ingredient accumulation, but also provide theoretical support for medicinal plant quality improvement, directional enrichment of effective components, elite germplasm screening and the efficient synthesis of bioactive compounds. This represents important scientific significance and application prospects in standardized cultivation, resource utilization and innovative breeding of traditional Chinese medicinal plants. Hitherto, genetic engineering serves as a core tool for the directional regulation and precise remodeling of plant secondary metabolic pathways and acts as a critical bridge connecting omics-based theoretical research and germplasm improvement. Meanwhile, evolutionary patterns and selection of plant genomes (including, but not limited to, chloroplast genomes and mitochondrial genomes) can also affect the accumulation of secondary metabolites of medicinal plants. This Special Issue will cover a wide variety of topics, aiming to contribute to the overall knowledge on the regulation mechanism of plant secondary metabolism from several perspectives.
