Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plants have emerged as versatile, scalable, and sustainable platforms for the production of recombinant biopharmaceuticals. Advances in plant molecular farming have enabled the efficient expression of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and other biologics, while recent innovations have expanded the field toward the production of advanced therapeutics, including nucleic acid-based medicines, viral vectors for cell and gene therapies, enzyme replacement therapies, and other next-generation biologics. These developments position plants as promising biofactories for addressing global healthcare challenges through cost-effective, safe, and rapid biomanufacturing.

This Special Issue will showcase recent advances in plant molecular farming across the entire biopharmaceutical development pipeline, ranging from molecular engineering and expression technologies to downstream processing, quality control, regulatory considerations, and translational applications. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that explore innovative strategies for improving product yield, quality, efficacy, and manufacturing scalability, as well as studies demonstrating the production of novel therapeutic molecules in plant-based systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, plant-made vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, advanced biologics, mRNA and nucleic acid therapeutics, viral vectors for cell and gene therapy, enzyme replacement therapies, transient and stable expression systems, chloroplast engineering, glycoengineering, synthetic biology, bioprocess optimization, and regulatory and commercialization aspects. By bringing together interdisciplinary research, this Special Issue will highlight the expanding role of plant molecular farming in the future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
