Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Aquaporins are multifunctional proteins that transport water and other small molecules. As such, their roles in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses have been extensively studied. However, although the involvement of aquaporins in plant hydraulic responses to stresses has been widely acknowledged, less is known about their contribution to the transport of other molecules, including gases and ions, and its significance to plant stress responses. Also, compared with herbaceous plants, less is known about the importance of aquaporins in stress responses of trees and other woody plants, in which transport processes are especially complex and challenging. Recent advances in molecular techniques, combined with the studies of plant physiological traits, provide excellent opportunities to develop novel insights into aquaporin regulations and functions. Continuing methodological advances make it also possible to revisit some of the fundamental issue concerning aquaporins and their multiple functions in plants. This Special Issue of Plants will focus on the role of aquaporins in stress responses of woody plants and will include original research papers, research reviews, and commentaries addressing this exciting area of plant studies.
