Dear Colleagues,
The incorporation of photonics in biomedical research has allowed great advances in the development of new therapeutic agents. Photophysical processes such as fluorescence or phosphorescence, as well as photochemical reactions have allowed great advances in the area of precision medicine. This Special Issue focuses on the various applications of photonics in biomedicine. This includes the administration and distribution of bioactive agents such as photosensitizing drugs, the design of photosensitive nanosystems for controlled drug release and the use of photo-markers that allow follow-up and monitoring of treatment (theragnostic strategies). The use of many of these photosensitive systems makes it possible to increase the efficiency of treatment, reduce side effects and precisely control the dose, as well as the most suitable place and time for each type of administration. Thus, this Special Issue will address fundamental aspects of photonics in the distribution and administration of drugs, including the following: a) the use of light-sensitive biosensors to determine intra- or intercellular parameters such as pH, ions, temperature, etc. as a consequence of drug treatment. b) The development of new drugs and/or prodrugs and/or photosensitive systems, including polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, inorganic nanoparticles, and hybrid materials, in addition to nanosystems for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). c) The design and development of nanovehicles for theragnosis that allow targeted and precise in situ monitoring of the release and pharmacological action. D) The use of photosensitive markers at different levels (drug, proteins, antibodies, etc.) that allow the study of the mechanism of pharmacological action. E) The study of drug–receptor interaction by using photonic spectroscopy, including affinity binding constants, FRET parameters, etc.
