Dear Colleagues,
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a pleiotropic peptide involved in neuroendocrine–immune communication, inflammation, immune tolerance, tissue homeostasis and repair. Through its receptors, mainly VPAC1 and VPAC2, VIP regulates key cellular and molecular pathways that have attracted growing interest for the development of novel therapeutic approaches. Recent advances in optimized VIP analogues, receptor-targeted strategies, innovative delivery systems and biomarker-guided approaches are opening new opportunities to improve clinical applicability. The VIP/VPAC receptor axis has shown potential relevance in a broad range of pathological settings, including autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, respiratory disorders, neurological diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular conditions, and cancer. This Special Issue aims to provide an updated and multidisciplinary view of the therapeutic potential of VIP, VIP analogues and VIP receptor-targeted strategies. Original research articles and reviews addressing disease mechanisms, receptor signaling, receptor-selective ligands, pharmacological optimization, innovative delivery systems, and preclinical or clinical applications are welcome. Contributions exploring VIP and its receptors as biomarkers, as well as their role in patient stratification and precision medicine, are also encouraged. We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions and hope this Special Issue will highlight current advances, remaining challenges and future opportunities for translating the VIP/VPAC receptor axis into clinical practice.
