Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the complex interplay between nutrients, the gut microbiome, and mental health. Recent research has shed light on the critical role of microbiota–nutrient interactions in shaping brain function and behavior. The gut–brain axis has emerged as a key regulator of mental health, with dysbiosis and nutrient deficiencies contributing to various psychiatric disorders. This issue brings together cutting-edge research on the impact of nutrients on the gut microbiome and its effects on mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, autism, and/or schizophrenia. We also examine the influence of maternal dietary patterns during neurodevelopment on mental health outcomes in offspring. By integrating insights from nutrition, microbiology, and psychiatry, this collection of articles provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of gut–brain research. We highlight opportunities for innovative, nutrition-based treatments and prevention strategies, and demonstrate how unlocking the potential of microbiota and nutrients can revolutionize mental health care.

This Special Issue is a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and anyone interested in the future of mental health management and prevention.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
