Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The endocrine system plays a pivotal role in maintaining the body’s internal balance, by controlling essential functions such as reproduction, growth, metabolism and energy homeostasis, mood and cognitive function. Even subtle derangements in the endocrine function may widely affect overall health, by contributing to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, thyroid disorders, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, sexual dysfunction, and adrenal disorders, many of which represent highly prevalent chronic conditions with a significant clinical, psychosocial and economic burden; preserving the endocrine health is therefore a keystone of preventive and therapeutic medicine.

Endocrine conditions often have distinct metabolic, inflammatory, and nutritional implications and tailored dietary interventions may help to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, and differentially modulate hormonal pathways, therefore supporting proper endocrine function; in the era of personalized medicine, there is compelling urge to move beyond one-size-fits-all dietary recommendations, and to adopt targeted dietary strategies accounting for individual physiology, lifestyle, and disease-specific demands.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the Special Issue “Nutrition for Endocrine Conditions: Tailoring Dietary Approaches”, aiming at gathering innovative high-quality evidence-based research bridging together molecular data, clinical practice and personalized medicine principles to highlight the importance of tailored nutritional strategies to effectively manage the prevention and treatment of endocrine-related conditions and improve quality of life.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Macronutrient and micronutrient role in thyroid function and autoimmunity;
  • Nutritional approaches for male and female reproductive disorders (i.e. hypogonadism, poor semen quality, infertility, menstrual disorders, endometriosis, PCOS etc.);
  • Nutritional approaches for male and female sexual disorders (i.e. erectile dysfunction, dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain etc.);
  • Nutritional modulation of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome;
  • Diet and gut–endocrine axis interactions (i.e. microbiome influence on hormonal regulation);
  • Dietary strategies for hypothalamic–pituitary-adrenal axis disorders;
  • Nutritional considerations in endocrine cancer patients;
  • Effect of time-restricted eating, ketogenic diets, or plant-based patterns on endocrine outcomes;
  • Nutritional preventive/mitigation strategies against endocrine disruption from environmental pollution;
  • Nutrition and chronobiology;
  • Nutrition and endocrine health in special populations (i.e. children, elderly, shift workers etc.);
  • Implementation science: translating dietary guidelines into real-world endocrine care.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
