Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nanomaterials have unique properties, such as size effects, a large specific surface area, and high reactivity. These properties allow packaging materials to be restructured at the molecular level, transforming their structure and function and driving breakthrough innovations in the packaging industry. Nanomaterials not only significantly enhance the mechanical strength, barrier properties (such as oxygen and moisture resistance), and heat resistance of packaging but also impart lasting antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities to materials. Furthermore, they enable intelligent responsiveness, including visual freshness monitoring, temperature-controlled phase change regulation and the controlled release of active substances. Nanomaterials currently have a profound impact on multiple sectors, including food packaging, temperature-controlled pharmaceutical storage and transportation, smart logistics, and sustainable packaging. This is driving packaging systems towards high performance, multifunctionality, and environmental sustainability. This Special Issue aims to showcase the latest research and innovative applications of nanotechnology in packaging science, collectively advancing the industry towards high performance, intelligence, and sustainability.

The scope of solicitation includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  1. Development and Application of Novel Nanomaterials: Innovative applications of nanocellulose, nanoclay, metal nanoparticles, nano-oxides, and bio-based nanomaterials are included in packaging.
  2. Active and Smart Packaging Systems: Active packaging with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Real-time quality monitoring and smart indicator packaging based on nanosensors.
  3. Nanostructuring Technologies: Optimise the performance of packaging materials using processing strategies such as electrospun nanofibres, multilayer composite structures, and nanoparticle reinforcement.
  4. Sustainable Packaging Solutions: Biodegradable and recyclable nanocomposite packaging materials.
  5. Packaging Performance and Safety Assessment: Enhancing the performance and barrier properties of packaging machinery with nanomaterials, alongside migration behaviour, safety research, and life cycle analysis in packaging applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nanomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
