Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Functional substances and biomaterials are at the forefront of biomedical innovation, offering tailored solutions for therapeutic development, tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and diagnostic applications. This Special Issue explores the intricate relationship between molecular structure, biological functionality, and translational applications, with a focus on the design and characterization of bioactive substances—including small molecules, Chinese Traditional active ingredients, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, and bio-derived active compounds—that can be developed into active pharmaceutical ingredients or advanced medical materials. We seek contributions that highlight the development of novel functional systems, such as hierarchical scaffolds, dynamic hydrogels, hybrid nanocomposites, and bioactive molecular assemblies, engineered to mimic native tissue microenvironments and enhance cellular interactions. Topics of interest include the rational design of bioactive molecules; active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine; and the integration of growth factors, signaling peptides, and genetic elements for targeted therapeutic effects, as well as the application of these substances in areas such as chronic wound healing, bone repair, immunomodulation, and personalized medicine. By bridging molecular design with biomedical engineering and pharmaceutical science, this Special Issue aims to showcase groundbreaking research that advances our understanding and utilization of functional substances and biomaterials. Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
