Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue will present investigations of 2D materials, including materials beyond graphene, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and Borophenes, as well as currently developed new 2D types, such as 2D ferroelectrics. Additionally, the synthesis and functionalization of these materials, as well as their emerging chemical and physical properties, will be detailed. Applications and outcomes of characterization methods, including optical, electrical, and optoelectronic measurements, as well as advanced electron microscopy and spectroscopy with image resolutions down to the atomic scale, will be shown. These investigations will reveal their fundamental structure as well as defect formations after functionalization of these materials, e.g., via doping, as well as the impact on their band structure properties. In 2D ferro-electrics, structural phases and phase changes, and how to induce these, as well as electric dipole configurations related to these phases, will be illustrated. Furthermore, nano-devices, which can be constructed from these materials, e.g., supercapacitors, 2D reconfigurable electronics tuned by local ferroelectric polarization, as well as 2D nano energy harvesters, will be described, and proof of their applications, e.g., in nano-electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, energy storage, sensors, and biomedicine, will be demonstrated.
All these experimentally established properties will be supported and proven by theoretical and quantum physics calculations.

-experimental proof/establishment of optoelectronic properties (including structural assessment via TEM down to the atomic scale);
-theoretical establishment via description and proof of photonic and optoelectronic properties and functionalities of 2D materials.
