Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growing global demand for sustainable production systems has intensified interest in the efficient use of plant-based resources and the reduction in agro-food waste. Large volumes of by-products generated across agricultural and food processing chains remain underutilized, despite their significant potential as sources of valuable compounds, materials and energy. Valorisation strategies offer innovative pathways to transform these residual streams into high-value products, contributing to more sustainable and resource-efficient systems. This Special Issue, “Valorization Strategies for Plant-Based By-Products”, aims to highlight recent advances in the development of integrated approaches such as biorefinery concepts, green extraction technologies and bioconversion processes. Emphasis is placed on research that supports the transition toward a circular bioeconomy, where waste is minimized and resources are continuously repurposed.

Contributions in this issue explore a wide range of topics, including the recovery of bioactive compounds, the production of biofuels and biomaterials and the optimization of environmentally friendly processing techniques. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to promote innovative solutions that enhance the sustainability, economic viability and environmental performance of agro-food systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
