Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Driven by global carbon neutrality goals and the rapid expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources, advanced energy storage and conversion technologies have become core pillars of sustainable energy systems. A wide range of devices—including rechargeable metal-ion batteries, aqueous batteries, solid-state batteries, supercapacitors, flow batteries, and electrocatalytic systems—are under intensive development to meet the growing demand for high energy density, long cycle life, and operational safety. As a pivotal determinant of device performance, material innovation remains a central research priority, with low-dimensional materials emerging as one of the most promising frontier directions.
Low-dimensional materials, spanning zero-dimensional quantum dots, one-dimensional nanowires/nanotubes, and two-dimensional layered structures, exhibit unique physicochemical properties: they have ultrahigh specific surface areas, abundant accessible active sites, tunable electronic structures, and shortened ion/charge transport pathways. These features enable them to break through the performance bottlenecks of conventional bulk materials, delivering substantial improvements in energy efficiency and device durability.
This Special Issue, “Low-Dimensional Materials for Energy Applications”, aims to collect high-quality original research articles, short communications, and comprehensive reviews that showcase state-of-the-art advances in the field. We particularly welcome contributions that offer novel insights into the rational design, controllable fabrication, advanced characterization, and mechanistic understanding of the low-dimensional materials used in diverse energy applications such as rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, and other sustainable energy technologies. This Special Issue will serve as a shared platform for the global research community to present recent discoveries and advance the practical deployment of high-performance low-dimensional energy materials.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
