In recent years, the convergence of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has accelerated the demand for compact, high-performance electronic devices, thereby intensifying the need for efficient and sustainable energy solutions. In response to these challenges, both academia and industry have increasingly focused on the discovery and development of advanced materials and innovative technologies aimed at enhancing device performance, reliability, and safety. Within this context, the integration of sustainable materials across a wide range of applications has emerged as a fundamental objective for the materials science community, underpinning the transition toward more resilient and environmentally responsible technological systems. This Special Issue highlights recent advances in the design, synthesis, and integration of functional materials for next-generation electrochemical devices. As global demand intensifies for sustainable energy storage, conversion, and sensing technologies, innovative material solutions are becoming central to overcoming limitations in efficiency, stability, and scalability.
Furthermore, the contributions in this Special Issue span a broad range of emerging systems, including advanced batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, electrolyzers, electrochemical sensors, electrochromic devices, and actuators, among others.
Emphasis is placed on novel nanostructured materials, hybrid composites, solid-state electrolytes, and environmentally benign alternatives that enable improved ionic/electronic transport, catalytic activity, and long-term durability.
Overall, this Special Issue underscores the critical interplay between material innovation and device engineering, providing insights that pave the way toward high-performance, cost-effective, and sustainable electrochemical technologies for future energy and environmental applications. Researchers are invited to contribute original research submissions related to the above-mentioned issues, as well as other related areas.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
