Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to present original research articles and comprehensive reviews to contribute to a Special Issue of the open-access journal Minerals dedicated to the “Effects and Environmental Impacts of Volcanic Rocks”.
The Special Issue focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the effects and environmental impacts of volcanism on the surrounding environment. Minerals, mineralized areas, and volcanic rock deposits can weather, thereby contaminating the environment. Volcanic bedrock can influence soil quality and water-rock interactions within volcanic aquifer systems, thereby affecting water quality. This section focuses on assessing environmental impacts, the geochemical behavior of toxic elements, the risk of soil and groundwater contamination, and ecological and health effects. In this context, we particularly welcome studies addressing: the role of volcanic bedrock in determining soil quality, including pedogenesis; nutrient cycling and soil contamination risks; water–rock interactions within volcanic aquifer systems, with emphasis on groundwater quality, mobilization of potentially toxic elements, and long-term impacts on drinking water resources; and the geochemical behavior, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation of hazardous elements in volcanic terrains and regions. Additionally, studies may address ecological and human health effects; nature-based solutions for contaminated volcanic soils and waters; monitoring of contamination processes and the influence of natural or disturbed mineralized areas; and prevention and mitigation/remediation strategies.
Studies linking detailed characterization of solid phases to environmental impact assessments—such as leaching tests, speciation analyses, or contaminant mobility modeling—are strongly encouraged. We also encourage authors to provide new information using standard analytical methods (mineralogical, geochemical, geochronological, etc.), especially given today's challenges. New analytical methods and approaches for experimental studies of crystal and amorphous structures, minor, trace, and ultra-trace elements (including Au, REE/Pt-group elements, and other critical metals), and isotopic analysis are also welcome.
Additionally, we welcome reviews and original research articles on the mineralogy, geochemistry, geochronology, and metallogeny of volcanic rocks, with special consideration for those that synthesize environmental and geological perspectives.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Minerals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
