Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In last ten years, the development of point-of-care (POC) biosensing methods has attracted tremendous attention.

Because of the features of rapid response, low price, easy operation, etc., these newly developed biosensing strategy are promising the way toward the next generation of analytical measurement and diagnostics of components of interest, such as heavy metals, small molecules, peptides, proteins, nucleic acid, cells, etc. Technically, three significant things need to be taken into consideration: the design of the devices, the detection of conjugate-forming mechanisms, and the detection methods. Specifically, these POC biosensing methods are based on but not limited to traditional methods such as electrochemistry, UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence, and electrochemiluminescence. Although many types of carry-on instruments are invented, they are still not simple (cheap) enough for patients with different education background (financial situation) to use. Therefore, these POC biosensing technologies still need to be improved in practice, to allow their commercialization . Accordingly, in this Special Issue, we would like to showcase review articles and research papers which focus on: (1) the design of new devices, (2) new biosensing mechanisms, (3) new detection techniques, and/or (4) improvement of existent POC biosensors.

As an important route for disease transmission, bioaerosols have received increasing attention. In the past decades, many efforts were made to facilitate the development of bioaerosol monitoring; however, there are still some important challenges in bioaerosol collection and detection. Thus, recent advances in bioaerosol collection (such as sedimentation, filtration, centrifugation, impaction, impingement, and microfluidics) and detection methods (such as culture, molecular biological assay, and immunological assay) were summarized in this review. Besides, the important challenges and perspectives for bioaerosol biosensing were also discussed. Full article
