Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The terahertz band (0.1 THz–10 THz), which has been barely exploited compared to the rest of the electromagnetic waves, has been receiving enormous attention around the world. Photonic devices exploiting this frequency band are set to become promising in a very diverse range of applications, such as biosensing, medical imaging, and 6G wireless communication technology, to name a few, due to their great potential in molecular label-free fingerprinting, non-ionizing properties, and broad spectral bandwidth. Among them, the realization of sensitive, high-speed, and high-efficiency micro-nano devices for wireless communication, terahertz integrated circuits, and miniaturized interconnects requires materials and structure designs with strong light–matter interactions. However, approaches for the generation, transmission, and conversion of terahertz electromagnetic waves are still limited. Therefore, novel materials and their micro-nano structures with strong terahertz response, extremely high electromagnetic confinement, and enhanced light–matter interaction are in urgent demand.

This Special Issue seeks reports on novel physical phenomena and mechanisms in new emerging materials (metals, semiconductors, two-dimensional materials, topological materials, etc.) for the emission, manipulation, and detection of terahertz electromagnetic waves, as well as the design and fabrication of micro-nano structures (cavity, metasurfaces, antenna, etc.) and devices for terahertz emission sources, modulators, detectors, and focal plane arrays for THz imaging.
