Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to publish your original research findings in this Special Issue, titled “3D-Printed Implants: Design, manufacture, simulation and applications”.

In the last decade, innovations in 3D printing technology have led to significant advancements in the manufacturing of customizable implants tailored to the unique anatomies and physiological needs of individual patients. This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and innovative applications regarding 3D-printed implants. This Special Issue will track the development of the implants through the entire spectrum of bespoke design, innovative manufacturing techniques, and numerical assessment of mechanical performance, before finally discussing the distinct applications of 3D-printed implants. Examples of such implants can include cardiovascular implants (stents, heart valve models); ear, nose, and throat (ENT) implants (cochlear, nasal); craniofacial implants (skull implants, facial prosthetics); vascular grafts; and ophthalmic implants (intraocular lenses, retinal implants). The field of 3D-printed implants is highly important due to its potential to revolutionize healthcare in several ways, such as through the bespoke customization and personalization of implants, manufacturing of complex and intricate designs of implants, accelerated prototyping of implants, reductions in surgery times, and advances in the virtual testing of implants.

The Special Issue aims to explore the advancements, challenges, and applications in the field of 3D-printed implants, with a focus on design, manufacturing, simulation, and applications. This Special Issue also hopes to provide a holistic understanding of the state of the art in this rapidly evolving research area.

To meet this aim, the following objectives will be addressed:

  1. To showcase diverse designs of cutting-edge microscale implants designed for manufacturing using 3D printing technology;
  2. To explore the different emerging 3D printing manufacturing techniques suitable for the manufacturing of microscale implants;
  3. To demonstrate the impact of virtual testing via numerical methods in establishing in vivo and ex vivo insights into the structural responses of the 3D-printed implants;
  4. To showcase different application areas in which bespoke designs of 3D printed implants have been used, thereby charting a future in which healthcare will continue to be revolutionized by these implants;
  5. To disseminate recent advances in smart implants and point-of-care manufacturing.

Article types: In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome.

Themes/keywords: Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following topics:

  • 3D printing technology;
  • Additive manufacturing;
  • Point-of-care manufacturing;
  • Design of biocompatible and biodegradable materials;
  • Computational simulation;
  • In silico studies;
  • Medical implants.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
