Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The past four decades have ushered in many new discoveries in brain energy metabolism research. Many of these discoveries were made by utilizing new technologies and techniques, a variety of model systems, and several hypotheses. As expected, skepticism, debates, and disagreements have divided this very active research field, especially since the discovery that cerebral tissue and skeletal muscle could utilize lactate as an oxidative energy substrate for the mitochondrial production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Two recently published editorials highlight the disagreements among investigators of brain energy metabolism regarding the best approach to continuing research in this utmost important field. The aim of the present Special Issue is to solicit contributions from researchers in various sections of this field that may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: glycolysis; mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation; energy substrates and their transport (glucose, lactate, ketone bodies, GLUTs, MCTs); lactate shuttle; neuronal and astrocytic energy metabolism; exercise; appetite; the role of energy metabolism in brain disorders such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, autism, and others; and methodologies in brain energy metabolism research. This Special Issue will accept case reports, commentaries, editorials, hypotheses, mini-reviews, methods, opinions, original research, perspectives, and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
