Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Skin diseases are among the most common health conditions worldwide and cause a great burden for patients and health systems. They lead to sleep disturbance, psychosocial distress, and social stigma. Frequently, the impact of dermatological conditions remains underestimated due to the low immediate mortality rate. However, their real influence lies in the long-term morbidity and substantial social costs they entail.

Understanding skin diseases requires integrating knowledge of genetic and environmental factors that, in combination with behavioral factors, lead to distinct pathophysiological processes, including epidermal barrier disruption, dysregulation of immune system function, and alterations in the microbiome. There are complex relationships with other disorders, including immune, metabolic, and psychiatric conditions, which have a significant impact on the clinical presentation and the outcomes of the treatment. Finally, global-scale challenges emerge that include such biological factors as increasing resistance to antimicrobial treatment, but also societal factors such as inequities in access to modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The ultimate goal is to provide a preventive and precision-based system that will be based on patient-centered care.

The optimization of this process is only possible with a better understanding of the etiology of skin disorders. Current advances in targeted therapy have changed our view on treatment in dermatology, and more sophisticated tools are being developed to facilitate these therapeutic methods. On the other hand, the role of additional non-pharmacological approaches is being acknowledged—patient education, lifestyle modifications, and psychological interventions are foundations in multiple dermatoses. It is now time to highlight the direct relationship between disease etiology, its impact on patients' lives, and the resulting approach to not only treatment, but also prevention.

The goal of this Special Issue, “Skin Diseases: Causes, Impacts, and Advances in Treatment and Prevention”, is to gather high-quality works that investigate the mechanisms, epidemiology, and management of dermatologic disease, with a particular emphasis on innovative strategies. This Special Issue aims to cover a broad range of topics, focusing on the relationships between the pathophysiology of skin diseases, targeted prevention strategies, personalized medicine approaches, novel pharmacological treatments, and the role of health services in dermatological management.

We would like to invite researchers to submit their original work, reviews, and any other papers that will help to enhance our understanding and improve care for dermatological patients.

We look forward to receiving your contributions!

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
