Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Transport infrastructure serves as the backbone of contemporary societies, facilitating economic transactions and spatial connections. In light of mounting issues including congestion growth, urban expansion, and environmental degradation, innovation breakthroughs have emerged as critical drivers of enhanced reliability, robustness, safety, and sustainability of transport networks. Technological innovations in materials science, pavement engineering, structural engineering, sensing devices, and artificial intelligence are fueling the emergence of smart infrastructures. This research examines the emergence and evolution of innovative technologies in the realm of transport infrastructure, seeking to elucidate innovation patterns that enhance effectiveness, economy, and environmental performance.

This Special Issue, entitled "Advanced Materials and Technologies for Pavement, Structural and Smart Transportation Infrastructure," invites the submission of scientific developments relating to transport infrastructure materials and engineering. The goal of this Special Issue is to bring together scientists, engineers, and practitioners working on the interface of materials science, civil engineering, pavement engineering, structural engineering, and intelligent transportation systems. This Special Issue will focus on recent scientific advances in relation to transport infrastructure materials and technologies. We encourage submissions focusing on innovative transport infrastructure materials and engineering applications. Relevant topics will include, but are not be limited to: innovative transport infrastructure materials; advanced pavement engineering; innovations in structural engineering; transport infrastructure computational simulation; innovations in SHM of transport infrastructure; innovative transport infrastructure sensing; digital twin transport infrastructure; AI-driven transport infrastructure management; sustainable transport infrastructure innovations; and other relevant topics.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced construction materials for transportation infrastructure;
  • Asphalt pavement materials and performance;
  • Concrete technology and structural materials;
  • Bridge engineering and structural performance;
  • Sustainable, recycled, and low-carbon materials;
  • Fibre-reinforced composites and high-performance materials;

  • Smart sensors, IoT, and digital twin technologies;

  • Lifecycle assessment and infrastructure asset management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
