Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Laser processing technology has become an ideal method for trans-scale functional manufacturing due to its high energy density, low heat input, minimal structural deformation, excellent structural performance, and high degree of automation. Over the past few decades, it has become one of the core technologies in cutting-edge scientific research and industrial production lines by covering macro manufacturing and micro atomic recombination. Highly concentrated laser energy is redefining the material manufacturing and surface engineering with unprecedented precision and intelligence. It is deeply involved in many fields, such as mechanical engineering, new energy, biomedicine, microelectronics, etc.

Based on the advantage of laser processing, in this Special Issue, we will focus on "Laser Processing for Materials Fabrication and Surface Engineering", to provide new development and sustainable growth by conducting a profound summary and more in-depth discussion on the technological developments in the related fields.

The scope of this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers covering, but not limited to, the following concepts:

  • Theoretical, design, and process of laser processing for materials fabrication to achieve devices or structures from scratch, such as, laser cutting, laser welding, laser punching, laser additive/subtractive manufacturing, 3D printing, etc.
  • Mechanism, predictive modeling, and preparation of the new composite/hybrid laser manufacturing technology to realize high-performance and multi-functional materials.
  • Enhancement special properties of material surfaces through laser surface processing technologies, including laser surface heat treatment, laser surface texturing, laser cladding and remanufacturing, laser cleaning, laser shock peening, laser chemical vapor deposition, pulsed laser deposition, laser surface micro/nano structure preparation and other laser assisted surface technologies are all of interests.
  • Laser processing of hard and ultra-hard materials for micro-machining and surface engineering applications.
  • Intelligent manufacturing of laser processing by combining artificial intelligence and big data to achieve intelligent process optimization, online monitoring, and adaptive control.
  • The mechanism of interaction between light and matter to reveal the mysteries of non-thermal equilibrium interactions, and the dynamic processes and quantitative relationships of the evolution of the material's microstructure during laser action.
  • The further application, challenges, and future of laser processing in various engineering applications fields.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
