Dear Colleagues,
The relentless pursuit of higher efficiency and sustainability in energy-intensive industries has placed refractory materials at the forefront of modern industrial innovation. As global manufacturing sectors—such as steel, cement, glass, and petrochemicals—face mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, the role of advanced refractories as a critical enabling technology has never been more vital. These materials not only provide the essential thermal barrier for extreme process environments exceeding 1500 °C but also directly influence product quality, equipment longevity, and operational safety. The contemporary challenge lies in developing refractories that can withstand increasingly harsh conditions involving corrosive slags, thermal shock, and mechanical stress, while simultaneously contributing to the circular economy through improved recyclability and reduced raw material consumption.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the science, engineering, and application of refractory materials. We consider contributions addressing innovative design strategies, novel characterization techniques, and sustainable manufacturing approaches that push the boundaries of refractory performance in high-temperature industrial processes.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advanced refractory ceramics and composite materials;
- Corrosion and wear mechanisms in extreme environments;
- Microstructure evolution and property optimization;
- Sustainable recycling and circular economy approaches for spent refractories;
- Novel monolithic refractories and installation techniques;
- Numerical modeling of thermomechanical behavior and failure.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
