Advances in Mechanical and Acoustic Properties of Metamaterials

Dear Colleagues,

The concept of metamaterials originally originated in the field of electromagnetism, and the artificially designed materials used to regulate the polarization of radio waves are called electromagnetic metamaterials.  Subsequently, the concept gradually expanded to other fields, such as acoustic metamaterials, optical metamaterials, thermal metamaterials and so on.  Mechanical metamaterials refer to artificially designed materials with specific microstructure, mesoscopic connections, and macroscopic layout.  The traditional concept of materials focuses on the composition, while mechanical metamaterials focus more on structure, sometimes called mechanical superstructure.  Different from existing materials in nature, specially designed mechanical metamaterials usually have unique properties and extraordinary properties, showing broad application prospects in engineering.

With the gradual deepening of people’s cognition of acoustic artificial structure, the frontier of acoustic metamaterials is gradually divided into two directions: One is to hope that the concept of metamaterials will gradually leave the scope of laboratory research, and then land in real industrial production and even market-oriented civilian products. The other, which focuses on theoretical research, uses acoustic metamaterials as a platform for realizing more complex physical phenomena.

We welcome the submission of original theoretical or experimental papers contributing to furthering the knowledge in wave mechanics; the acoustic properties of porous materials; material structure vibration and noise control; lightweight material structure vibration and noise reduction; the design, performance characterization, and application of metamaterials or meta structures; and the structural mechanics, vibration, and noise reduction of composite materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
