Dear Colleagues,
Optical fibers underpin modern telecommunication infrastructures and are rapidly expanding their roles in sensing, laser systems, biophotonics and industrial monitoring. Beyond conventional silica fibers, emerging applications increasingly require advanced fiber materials and architectures with tailored performance, including extended transmission windows, enhanced nonlinearity, improved dopant compatibility and stability under harsh operating conditions.
This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in optical fiber materials and related enabling technologies, spanning material design, synthesis and purification, preform fabrication, fiber drawing and multiscale characterization. Contributions are welcomed across diverse platforms, including silica-based compositions, soft glasses, polymers and crystalline or hybrid material systems. Particular interest is placed on innovative strategies such as advanced doping, functional coatings and encapsulation and microstructured fibers.
We invite high-quality original research articles and authoritative reviews that connect fundamental materials science with application-driven development. Topics include nonlinear and mid-infrared fiber photonics and fiber-optic sensing technologies such as grating-based devices, optical fiber MOEMS devices and integration into wearable, flexible and human–machine interface platforms, together with reliability and packaging considerations. This collection seeks to capture the state of the art and outline future directions for next-generation optical fiber materials and their applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
