Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to contribute to the forthcoming Special Issue, “Recent Advances and Applications in Diamond Materials”, to be published in Materials (MDPI).

Diamond has garnered increasing attention in the field of materials science due to its outstanding combination of physical and chemical properties, including exceptional mechanical hardness, high thermal conductivity, wide electronic bandgap, chemical inertness, and equivalence to biological tissues. Advances in synthesis techniques, particularly microwave-assisted chemical vapor deposition (MWCVD), have enabled the controlled fabrication of high-quality intrinsic and doped diamond films with different crystalline forms (from single crystals to nanodiamonds). Modern functionalization techniques, such as ultrafast laser-based processing, have also paved the way to defect-engineered diamonds with properties tailored to a specific application, hence expanding its technological relevance.

These developments have opened new opportunities in a wide range of applications, including high-power high-frequency electronics, quantum technologies (e.g., nitrogen-vacancy centers for sensing and information processing), photonics, radiation detectors, dosimeters for radiotherapy, and energy-related systems, such as high-temperature solar cells or photoelectrochemical converters.

Given the rapid pace of innovation, a dedicated forum is needed to gather and highlight recent breakthroughs and emerging trends in diamond research.

This Special Issue aims to collect high-quality contributions focusing on recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and application of diamond materials, providing a comprehensive yet focused overview of current research directions.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Growth techniques and synthesis of diamond films and nanostructures;
  • Surface and bulk modification and functionalization;
  • Mechanical, structural, chemical, thermal, electronic, optical, and photoelectronic properties;
  • Defects, doping, and color centers for quantum applications;
  • Diamond-based devices and systems, including modelling and simulation;
  • Integration with other materials and heterostructures;
  • Applications in sensing, medicine, electronics, photonics, and energy.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
