Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Inspired by priorities highlighted by WHO, FDI, and the dental research community, this Special Issue aims to showcase research that connects material innovations, tissue preservation, antimicrobial stewardship and improved patient-centered clinical outcomes.
Highlighting materials that go beyond passive tissue replacement and actively contribute to oral health by improving restoration durability, preventing biofilm formation, supporting tooth remineralization, modulating host responses and promoting tissue repair are the main scopes of this Special Issue. The issue will cover functional biomaterials while maintaining dental antimicrobial applications, such as biomimetic restorative materials; antimicrobial and antibiofilm polymers and additives; nanoparticles and coatings; functionalized implant surfaces; bioactive glasses and bioceramics; smart resin composites; calcium silicate- and calcium phosphate-based systems; and others for dental restorations.
Recent studies have emphasized transitions from mechanically optimized materials to multifunctional, biologically compatible, and minimally invasive systems. These developments address major challenges in dentistry, including secondary caries, restoration failure, peri-implant infections, antimicrobial resistance, tooth tissue loss, and the need for minimally invasive regenerative treatment strategies.
We are honored to invite authors to contribute research articles and review papers to this Special Issue, focusing on any of the highlighted topics—especially those related to functional biomaterials or antibacterial systems in restorative dentistry.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
