Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The proposed Special Issue, “Lipid Nanoparticles: Preparation and Biomedical Applications,” aims to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary platform that highlights recent advances in the design, formulation, characterization, functionalization, and translational application of lipid-based nanocarriers in modern biomedicine. This Special Issue will focus on the evolving role of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as versatile delivery systems capable of improving the therapeutic efficacy, stability, bioavailability, targeting efficiency, and safety profile of diverse bioactive agents, including small molecules, nucleic acids, peptides, proteins, vaccines, and imaging agents.

The scope of this Special Issue encompasses the fundamental and applied aspects of lipid nanoparticle research, including but not limited to:

  • Formulation strategies and preparation techniques;
  • Physicochemical characterization;
  • Surface engineering and ligand functionalization;
  • Scalable manufacturing approaches;
  • Quality-by-design and regulatory considerations;
  • Stability and storage challenges;
  • Pharmacokinetics and biodistribution;
  • Targeted and stimuli-responsive delivery;
  • Safety, toxicity, and immunogenicity assessments.

Particular emphasis will be placed on emerging biomedical applications of LNPs in cancer therapy, gene delivery, RNA therapeutics, vaccine development, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, inflammatory diseases, regenerative medicine, and theranostics. This Special Issue will also welcome contributions exploring hybrid lipid nanocarriers, biomimetic lipid systems, artificial intelligence-assisted formulation design, and translational or clinical perspectives.

Within the context of the existing literature, this Special Issue seeks to address the rapidly expanding yet highly fragmented body of research surrounding lipid nanoparticles. While significant attention has been directed toward LNPs following the clinical success of mRNA vaccines and nucleic acid therapeutics, many current reviews remain application-specific or narrowly focused on isolated formulation approaches. This Special Issue aims to bridge these gaps by integrating advances across pharmaceutical sciences, nanotechnology, materials science, molecular medicine, and translational therapeutics into a unified scholarly collection. By bringing together original research articles and systematic reviews, this Special Issue intends to provide a contemporary and forward-looking resource that captures both foundational developments and future directions in lipid nanoparticle technology.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
