Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The field of functional biomaterials is rapidly evolving, driven by continuous technological innovations and their translation into biomedical applications for drug, gene delivery, and other biomedical aspects. Among these, nature-based biomaterials have emerged as a particularly promising class due to their intrinsic biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to closely mimic the structure and function of native tissues. Despite significant progress reported in the literature, important challenges remain regarding the comprehensive evaluation of their safety, especially in complex medical devices composed of multiple materials. In such cases, assessing the host immune response is critical for determining biocompatibility and long-term performance.

This Special Issue, titled “Nature-Based Biomaterials for Biomedical Application”, aims to provide a focused platform for recent advances and emerging trends in this field. It seeks to bridge fundamental research and clinical translation by highlighting innovative strategies for the design, characterization, and application of natural biomaterials. Contributions are invited on topics including, but not limited to, biocompatibility assessment, immune responses to implants, dental biomaterials, polymeric micelles, stimuli-responsive hydrogels, pH-responsive biomaterials, inorganic biomaterials, synthetic biomaterials, silk fibroin, metallic, ceramic, and hybrid biomaterials, and nanofiber scaffolds for medical use.

By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue will position itself within the current literature as a timely contribution addressing both the opportunities and the remaining challenges in the development of safe and effective nature-based biomaterials for biomedical applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
