Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

All epidemiological studies show that erectile dysfunction (ED) affects 30% of the population of all ages. It is therefore a public health problem. The arrival of type V phosphodiesterase inhibitors almost 25 years ago has transformed the approach to ED, offering effective symptomatic treatment to almost 40% of patients. However, the pathophysiological and etiological approaches have been neglected. As a result, many patients are left to fend for themselves when magic pills are ineffective or poorly tolerated. Here, we show that ED, like any other symptom, requires a diagnostic search that is all the more demanding because its etiology is multifactorial. Furthermore, in the very large number of patients with vascular risk factors, the onset of ED of proven arterial origin precedes the onset of coronary heart disease by several years. The discovery and management of ED, at any age, must be an integral part of human medicine.
