Dear Colleagues,
The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes of 11.1% is projected to rise to 12.9% by 2050. Type 2 diabetes accounts for more than 90% of all diabetes cases. Chronic complications of type 2 diabetes are due to various disorders and many metabolic pathways. These are, in general, divided into micro-and macrovascular complications. Microvascular complications in diabetes result from the impairment of small blood arteries, leading to a large increase in morbidity. Retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy are prevalent microvascular consequences. The cumulative incidence of any microvascular complication reaches 50% by 9 years and 80.1% by 15 years after diagnosis. The major forms of macrovascular disease are coronary heart disease, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease and stroke, which share both an atherosclerotic background and several common risk factors. The relationship between diabetes and cardiovascular illness is complex, encompassing dyslipidemia, hypertension and a proinflammatory state associated with diabetes and cardiovascular events. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death among individuals living with diabetes, highlighting the importance for prevention. Diabetic foot is a severe and debilitating complication of diabetes, characterized by neuropathy and ischemia, often leading to ulceration, infection, and ultimately, a high risk of amputation.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to chronic complications of type 2 diabetes. There are now specific treatments to slow the progression of established nephropathy and cardiovascular disease. For this Special Issue, potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Pathogenesis of diabetic complications
- The epidemiology of diabetic complications
- Microvascular complications
- Macrovascular complications
- The diabetic foot
- Dyslipidemia and hypertension in diabetes
- Management of diabetic complications
We call on clinicians and researchers to contribute their expertise and findings to this Special Issue. By consolidating knowledge and fostering clinical innovation, we aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic complications in type 2 diabetes, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
