Pelvic Floor Disorders: Emerging Perspectives on Therapeutic Approaches

Pelvic floor disorders represent a growing global health challenge due to population aging, increased life expectancy, obesity, and the rising demand for improved quality of life among women worldwide. Conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence significantly affect physical, psychological, sexual, and social well-being, generating a substantial socioeconomic burden for healthcare systems. In recent years, important advances in minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical techniques have transformed the management of pelvic floor dysfunctions, aiming to improve anatomical and functional outcomes while reducing complications and recovery time. At the same time, there is increasing recognition that treatment success must extend beyond anatomical correction and include patient-centered outcomes, particularly quality of life, symptom relief, and patient satisfaction.

Research in this field is therefore both timely and highly significant for academia and clinical practice. There is a growing need for high-quality evidence comparing surgical approaches, evaluating long-term outcomes, and validating standardized tools to measure the real impact of interventions on patients’ daily lives. Furthermore, innovations in imaging, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and digital health technologies offer new opportunities to personalize pelvic floor care and optimize therapeutic strategies. Advancing research in pelvic floor medicine and reconstructive surgery will contribute to evidence-based practice, multidisciplinary collaboration, and ultimately to improving women’s health worldwide.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to pelvic floor disorders, reconstructive pelvic surgery, and patient-reported outcomes. We consider contributions addressing innovative surgical techniques, comparative clinical studies, quality-of-life assessment, imaging and diagnostic tools, conservative and rehabilitative therapies, mesh-related research, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and multidisciplinary approaches to pelvic floor dysfunction.
