Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cholecystitis remains one of the major health problems in the Western world. This clinical condition refers to any form of inflammation involving the gallbladder and has many forms including acute acalculous or acute calculous cholecystitis, chronic cholecystitis, emphysematous cholecystitis, suppurative cholecystitis, and xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis. Typical clinical symptoms include right upper quadrant pain with or without vomiting, fever, and leukocytosis. Ultrasound is the preferred initial modality in the investigation of right upper quadrant pain. It is more sensitive than other imaging modalities and more readily available. Furthermore, the prognosis of acute cholecystitis is usually excellent with timely diagnosis and management. However, complications associated with cholecystitis create a substantial challenge to the clinician and may result from secondary bacterial infection and mural ischemia. Thus, complicated cholecystitis may cause significant morbidity and mortality, and early diagnosis plays a crucial role in the surgical management.

The accurate combination of early diagnosis and surgical management by a laparoscopic approach improves outcomes for patients with acute cholecystitis and should be pursued by clinicians.

In this Special Issue, we would like to invite original research articles and reviews related to the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cholecystitis.

We look forward to receiving your submissions.
