Dear Colleagues,
Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a complete or partial trisomy of chromosome 21, leading to both developmental and age-related complications. The incidence of DS in the US is 1 in every 700 to 775 babies born each year, and in Europe these numbers are about 1 in 990 live births of live birth incidence. Since the severity of functional capacities and medical issues are quite variable in those with DS, medical and preventative treatments are complicated. Major organ systems affected by DS during development include neurological, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal systems. Congenital structural abnormalities of the heart, most commonly atrioventricular septal defects (AVSDs), affect about 50% of infants with DS. In addition, the developmental trajectory of the brain/spinal cord axis is most often delayed, which results in mild-to-moderate intellectual disabilities, with reduced neuronal numbers, for example, in the frontal cortex, and speech and/or motor delays. In addition, about half of teenagers/adults with DS suffer from sleep apnea, which is not always discovered or treated. With aging, individuals with DS exhibit early onset of hearing and vision loss, Alzheimer pathology and dementia, as well as thyroid dysfunction and musculoskeletal deterioration. This Special Issue is dedicated to novel and groundbreaking discoveries that could affect the medical treatment of children, adults, and older adults with DS and improve the health span of this medically underserved population.
