Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, in the journal Infrastructures (MDPI), aims to provide a premier international forum for a wide range of professions, including academics, researchers, and industry professionals, to discuss and present the most recent challenges and developments in "Recent Advances in Railway Engineering." This Special Issue invites contributions of original, high-quality research (research and review papers are also welcome). The papers' subjects may range from the railway vehicle across the track to the subsoil, but they are all related to the engineering (preferably—but not limited to—civil, mechanical, electrical, transportation and environmental engineering) field. The papers may include the results of modern laboratory tests, field/in situ tests, numerical modeling, railway diagnostics, etc.

We anticipate that this Special Issue will “pave the way” for new research and technological advancements in this vital field.

Subjected to complex loadings from the wheel–rail interaction, turnout rail is prone to crack damage. This paper aims to develop a condition evaluation method for crack-alike damage detection of in-service turnout rail. A covariance-based structural condition index (CI) is firstly constructed by fusing the time-frequency components of responses, generating a series of patterns governed by the interrelationships between column members in the CI matrix. The damage-sensitive interrelationships latent in CI are then modeled using Bayesian regression and historical data, and baseline patterns are built with predictions of the models and new inputs. The deviations between the baseline patterns and the actual patterns of the newly observed CI members are quantitatively assessed. To synthetically consider the individual assessment results, a technique is developed to combine the individual assessment results into one synthetic result by designing a group of suitable weights taking into consideration both probabilistic confidence and reference model error. If the deviations are within a tolerable range, no damage is flagged; otherwise, damage existence and severity are reported. A case study is conducted, in which monitoring data from the database of a railway turnout are applied to build the CI matrix and examine the damage identification performance of this method. Good agreement between actual conditions and assessment results is found in different testing scenarios in the case study, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Full article

Methods of increasing the bearing capacity of corrugated metal structures of transport constructions using transversal stiffening ribs in the form of additional corrugation and stiffeners are given. Based on the theory of elasticity, a mathematical model for estimating the stress-strain state of transport constructions made of corrugated metal structures reinforced with stiffening ribs in the form of double corrugation was developed. The method of determining equivalent forces during rolling stock passage is offered. It has been established that double corrugation increases the bearing capacity of corrugated metal structures. Therefore, additional corrugation of corrugated metal structures reduces stresses by up to 20% and deflections by 50%. The obtained results show that the increase in rolling stock speed does not lead to a significant increase in stresses and strains in CMS when the railway track corresponds to the design state. Track deterioration models (TDMs) help to allocate maintenance work (direct costs) to vehicle runs. Furthermore, these models demonstrate the impact of rolling stock properties on infrastructure. This paper review provides an overview of the state of the art in railway track deterioration modelling and outlines the research potential in this domain. The main focus lies on ballast degradation, rail surface wear and fatigue, and their description in an empiric analytic wear formula. The basis for discussion is the wear formula of the Graz University of Technology. While the TDM demonstrates effectiveness, enhancements are sought, particularly with regard to adjusting the track parameters that vary across railway networks. Further exploration aims to refine the description of rail surface wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF), incorporating factors such as traction energy and short-wave effects and adapting mathematical functions such as the t-Gamma function. This review underscores the need for ongoing research to develop TDMs that are both simple and detailed enough to encourage track-friendly rolling stock design. Full article
